One of the coolest Christmas compilations you could ever hope to own – but you probably guessed that already, from the cover image that pays tribute to a classic set from James Brown! The JB image is certainly well placed – as most of the tracks here are deeply funky Holiday tunes – the kind of gritty seasonal ditties that were only ever issued as funky 45s back in the day – and most really only on a local level, too! Strut's really outdone themselves with this excellent collection – as it features a fair bit of Christmas rarities we've never heard before, but which are totally wonderful – all-new tunes, not common Christmas cover versions – played and performed with a hell of a soulful feel throughout. The golden era of ‘60s and ‘70s soul music boasts a great tradition for Christmas songs and, following in the footsteps of classic Christmas albums from the Motown stable and James Brown, Strut enter the festive spirit this November with the first ever Yuletide compilation on the label, IN THE CHRISTMAS GROOVE, bringing together 12 rare soul, funk and blues cuts rediscovered from Christmases past. Featuring tracks often only ever released as obscure 45 B-sides, the compilation tracks one-off moments when the good groove met the jingle bells to devastating effect. Joey Negro Biog

Joey Negro is the most well-known pseudonym of master British DJ/producer/remixer Dave Lee. Under a plethora of other monikers including Jakatta, Akabu, Doug Willis, Raven Maize, The Sunburst Band, Sessomatto, and Z Factor, Dave was one of the first artists to incorporate disco samples in house music when he began his production career in 1990. Indeed, he was in the studio making credible and outstanding British House music when many luminaries around him were still busy getting to grips with their decks. In 2010 little has changed and Dave is widely regarded as one of the most commercially successful and in-demand artists on the global scene.

A producer first and foremost, Dave uses his DJ’ing talents as a sound-bed for tweaking his musical creations to perfection. His work ethic is legendry, having been involved in well over 200 productions, countless albums and a healthy stack of hit singles. Through releasing tracks such as ‘Must Be The Music’, ‘Make A Move On Me’, ‘Can’t Get High Without You’ and Jakatta’s ‘American Dream’ and ‘My Vision’, Dave has established himself as a true professional who keeps getting better. Widely considered an expert in all things funk, soul and disco-related, Dave is also a helpful ‘consultant’ depended on by radio and TV producers world wide.

Born on the Isle of Wright, Dave grew up on the south coast of England during the late 70’s and early 80’s listening to local radio stations and the sounds of Earth Wind & Fire, Heatwave, Shalamar and The Jacksons. A lack of good quality music at the time encouraged Dave to seek inspiration in the record shops of London. This soon led to a job at London vinyl store Smithers & Leigh where he first heard the revered house classics ‘Jack Your Body’ and ‘I Can Feel It’, sounds that were major inspirations for him to produce his own records.

Following the closure of Smithers & Leigh, Dave joined Rough Trade Distribution where he was charged with setting up its dance music arm, Demix. It was here where Dave started working with the Rhythm King label, which had had a number of hits with acts like Bomb The Bass, S-Express, Cookie Crew and Beatmasters.

His experience in advising other labels led to Dave establishing his own imprint, Republic Records, in 1988. Now defunct, Republic is today remembered as the UK’s first soulful house label releasing classics such as Phase II “Reachin” and Turntable Orchestra “You’re Gonna Miss Me”. This was also home the first Dave Lee production, M.D.E.M.M.'s ‘Get Busy’, which reached 88 in the UK charts and 18 in the club charts. His most successful work during this time, according to Dave himself, was ‘Forever Together’, released under his Raven Maize alter ego. Dave created hype by licensing the song to NY label Quark and created a story of an ex-convict who played in a steel band in Disney Land, even using a computer-enhanced image of a friend sporting an afro as a press shot.

The Gumbo Brothers
Over the last seven years,The Gumbo Brothers have firmly rooted themselves in the eclectic artistic tradition of Venice Beach, California with weekly performances at various local venues and parties. Since 2003, they have been entertaining the Venice community with an annual Mardi Gras parade on the boardwalk including a traditional brass band, funky drum corps, stilt walkers, dancers and costumed bead-throwing revelers. The band's debut cd, Funky Freedom, was released in 2007. According to CDBaby, "This collection of swampy funk is deep in the pocket, right where it should be. The grooves are thick, the vocals are sparse and always add texture to the interplay between the musicians, and the vibes never get bogged down...The Gumbo Brothers say they're 'going to hit you with some ass-shakin' funk!' They got that right. Prepare yourself." It was followed up in 2008 by The Gumbo Brothers On Fire, a collection of original Mardi Gras songs.
Influences include: The Meters, Dr. John, War, Grant Green, Ivan “boogaloo” Joe Jones, James Brown, The Dirty Dozen, Galactic, and Walter “Wolfman” Washington. With over 300 shows behind them including notable appearances at the Boom Boom Room in San Francisco, The House of Blues in LA, and venues up and down the west coast, this Venice-based quartet is bringing their infectious, booty movin' bayou grooves to swamp-funk fans throughout the southland and beyond.

Psych-Funk 101 (1968-1975) is the debut release from World Psychedelic Funk Classics and presents itself as 'a global psychedelic funk curriculum', complete with a 'course description' and 'supplemental listening' in its copious notes (found either on the handsome gatefold sleeve of the vinyl or the 36-page booklet of the CD). The title may be a little misleading since some tracks contain funk and some contain psych with a geniune melding of the two not always apparent, but nonetheless this is chock full of amazing and eye-opening stuff. The only names I was previously familiar with were Ethiopian jazz legend Mulatu Astatke (who doesn't quite reach his usual heights here) and French Zeuhl dudes Eskaton (who do) but I'll certainly be investigating the others further, particularly Turkey's Husnu Ozkartal Oskestrasi and Italy's Armando Sciassia whose bassy grooves pretty much blew me away. Hopefully there are many more of these to come..

Mulatu Astatke is an innovative multi-talented musician, composer, arranger and the founder of Ethio Jazz. Born in Jimma, Ethiopia, Mulatu Astatke studied at Lindisfarne College and Trinity College of Music in England and Berklee College of Music in Boston, USA. As a vibraphone, conga and percussion player, he has performed at numerous concerts in Ethiopia and abroad, including appearances at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC, Lincoln Center in New York, Beethoven-Haus in Bonn and Barbican Center in London. Mulatu also performed as a guest artist with the Duke Ellington orchestra during its visit to Ethiopia in 1971. Most recently, Mulatu has contributed prominently to the soundtrack of the film Broken Flowers.

Jimmy Smith (December 8, 1925 or 1928 – February 8, 2005) was a jazz musician whose performances on the Hammond B-3 electric organ helped to popularize this instrument. In 2005, Smith was awarded the NEA Jazz Masters Award from the National Endowment for the Arts, the highest honor that the United States bestows upon jazz musicians.

Gonzalez was the pianist who helped to pioneer two of the most popular dances of the 20th century, the mambo and the cha-cha-cha. Ry Cooder described his style as a "Cuban cross between Thelonious Monk and Felix the Cat."

Cuban pianist Rubén González has lived through this century's greatest musical windstorms, from the emergence of son to salsa to Latin Jazz and more. Born in 1919, González also retired from playing professionally years before this, his debut CD, was even recorded. He reemerged in 1996 when World Circuit stopped in Cuba to record for several days. He ended up making a thrilling debut. This impromptu CD was cut in a day, and its limber vibe shines for all its uptempo looseness. González plays a rainbow of Cuban rhythms and prods his percussionists and lone trumpeter to great depths of conversation and great heights of flash. --Andrew Bartlett

Strangely enough, an afro-beat band from Finland!! Why not? Rhythm Funk Masters’ music isn’t actually pure afro-beat, but it also combines elements from different music styles like jazz, funk and rock to it. Each band member brings in his own character. To say it in a simple way, we play instrumental afro-beat, funk and jazz music with a strong Scandinavian flavour. Rhythm Funk Masters was formed in 2003 in Helsinki. We’ve had some gigs every now and then, but now we’re going to get more active that we got our first album out! Afro-American-Arctic is recently released in Finland and Japan.

Dubbed by Gilles Peterson as the best rare grooves compilation series of all time, Strange Games and Funky Things returns with the fifth volume (it's been 14 years since BBE's Peter Adarkwah conceived and launched the series), which offers classic dancefloor-ready tracks ("War Is Coming! Crate-diggers and vintage record fanatics of the 21st century, listen up - a never released soundtrack album from an ill-fated 1970's action flick, rediscovered earlier this year, will hit stores this summer.A spokesperson for media-shy jazz-funk outfit Cadillac Jones announced at a weekend press conference that the non- malicious mislabeling of the original tapes led to the soundtrack's estimated twenty-seven year disappearance. Feature film "The Big Takedown" was reportedly shelved by an unnamed major studio when producers exceeded their budget by twice the originally allotted amount and were, by all reports, nowhere near done with the picture. Attempts to raise additional capital failed and the plug was pulled on the project once and for all."It was tough on the guys in Cadillac Jones as they'd put months into that record," said the spokesperson for the band, going on to say jokingly that "it was the '70s, you know, so it's all a bit blurry, but there was no shortage of parties and heaven knows what else, so we, you know, got on to other projects." Details on how the tapes resurfaced are vague, and the band's representative commented only that an old friend at the now-defunct studio found them in a box he carried out when the Hollywood powerhouse declared bankruptcy in 1982. (Although it gathered dust for close to three decades, it appears as though the soundtrack album was the only piece of "The Big Takedown" that was submitted on time).This same associate was able to guide Cadillac Jones through the process of buying back the rights to the album, which has finally, after some thirty years, been mixed and mastered. The only other trace of "The Big Takedown" to resurface is conceptual artwork by J. Schiavone, which will appear on the cover of the soundtrack release. Several of Schiavone's "Big Takedown"-related pieces were returned with the original recordings.

Jorge Ben (now known as Jorge Ben Jor) represented the Rio wing of Brazil's Tropicalia movement. Born to an African mother, Ben embraced African and African-American music - especially funk and soul - far more successfully than other Tropicalia stars. This, along with the insistent presence of his melodic guitar lines, make his music readily accessible to U.S. listeners. In the early 1960s, Ben recorded as a samba artist, gaining international reknown as a songwriter when Sérgio Mendes covered his song, "Mas Que Nada." Later, along with contemporaries such as Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil and Gal Costa, he pioneered the revolutionary "Tropicalia" movement, which blended American blues, rock and roll and pop kitsch into the already potent musical stew of Brazilian pop. Later still, Ben became known as the driving force behind Brazil's homegrown funk/soul scene, and was an inspiration for the Black Rio soul scene. Ben's intimate, playful vocals and alluring acoustic guitar give him a unique, seductive sound. Like many other Brazilian MPB artists, his best recordings were made before the late 1970s, although his later commercial pop-rock recordings have more integrity than similar efforts by contemporaries such as Gilberto Gil.

Trio Mocoto back in style, check it out
Twenty-six years between albums is no small gap, but Brazil's Trio Mocoto is no regular band. Since their split in 1975, all three have remained active in music, often at the contemporary end, and their experiences show on Samba Rock, whose first track, Voltei Amor, is almost a manifesto for the album, mixing some very swinging samba with electronica touches and even a bit of funky vocoder singing. But, as all things old are new again, their original sound from the '60s and '70s comes across as fresh as it did originally, with plenty of Fender Rhodes piano in the mix. As well as exploring Brazilian music, old and new, there's also a nod to North America on Kibe Cru, with its boogie-woogie piano bass, that makes you think it's about to break into a Leon Russell song, and its semi-spoken vocals a tip of the hat to rap. Still, the heart is the subtle delicacy of the samba with all three members (João Parahyba, Nereu Gargalo, and Luiz Carlos Fritz) contributing vocals, either alone or in unison. While most of the material is original, a cover of Jorge Ben's Adelita is driven by Fritz's jazzy guitar, with some kicking horns punctuating the percussion. Não Sei Porque brings in miniMoogs for a infectious '70s Brazil feel, while the instrumental Mocotó Beat has a smoky, blues-y groove. After so long away, most bands would be working hard to recapture a fraction of what they once had; Trio Mocoto move ahead with grace, funk, and style, as if there'd never been a break at all.

Just imagine the implications if this happened in the capitalist western world! The fascinating sleevenotes present a wealth of eye-opening information, but it's the music that will leave you even more gobsmacked. Los Rápidos 'Safari Salvaje' initially sounds uncannily like Vic Reeves in club singer mode before tearing into a devastating funksoul groove and building to an intensely brilliant drum solo in the closing stages, while the cheeky organ, blazing brass and stupendous percussion of Grupo Monumental's 'Tremendo Tremendo' will have you booking your next holiday to whatever warehouse this solid gold came from! Plus, there's super slick disco from Juan Pablo Torres on 'Y Aparecio El Trombon', charming exotica from Sonopop on 'Vanguardia Y Juventud', fuzzy psyche funk from Los Llamas on 'Siboney' and legendary hip-grippin son on Hilario Durán's El Son De Victoria'. Due to the fact that this music was never treated with the care it deserved by the Cuban government, the quality of the recordings is astonishingly good, and regardless of time or location this music simply begs for a space in your collections.

Badass funk from this obscure 70s band – one who play here with a really wicked edge to their groove!
At some level, the sound is right up there with some of the bigger ensemble funk acts of the time – particularly that Mercury Records generation who were tightening things up from the indie years of the earlier part of the decade. Yet there's also some rougher edges that really make the record great – some offbeat production touches, and weird raspy sounds from some of the instruments – not to mention some hard and heavy breaks on some of the album's best tracks! Bits of moog round things out with some especially nice touches on a few tunes – and titles include "Just For You", "Step Out", "I Am Mine", "Where Did I Go From Here", "Nothing Can Stop My Loving You", "Nobody", "Love To Love", and "For A Taste Of Your Love".
