Osaka Monaurail - Reality For The People (2007)

"Reality For The People", the 5th album from Osaka Monaurail, was the first release under the new SHOUT! Productions. The opening track Quicksand features a fast-driving but very cool rhythm section. Ceora is a Lee Morgan bossa-nova original with a novel bogaloo arrangement. Pretty good approximation of early 70's James Brown Funk sung in heavily accented English.

Rhythm Funk Masters - Afro-American-Arctic (2007)

Strangely enough, an afro-beat band from Finland!! Why not? Rhythm Funk Masters’ music isn’t actually pure afro-beat, but it also combines elements from different music styles like jazz, funk and rock to it. Each band member brings in his own character. To say it in a simple way, we play instrumental afro-beat, funk and jazz music with a strong Scandinavian flavour. Rhythm Funk Masters was formed in 2003 in Helsinki. We’ve had some gigs every now and then, but now we’re going to get more active that we got our first album out! Afro-American-Arctic is recently released in Finland and Japan.

VA - Dj Spinna & BBE Soundsystem : Strange Games & Funky Things 5

Dubbed by Gilles Peterson as the best rare grooves compilation series of all time, Strange Games and Funky Things returns with the fifth volume (it's been 14 years since BBE's Peter Adarkwah conceived and launched the series), which offers classic dancefloor-ready tracks ("War Is Coming! War Is Coming!") alongside lesser-known world music gems ("Asafo Beesuon/ Obaa Yaa Aye Me Bone" by C.K. Mann & His Carousel 7). Definitely one of the strongest comps in the series. Recommended.

It joins the dots between 70s soul, 80s rare groove and 90s mass market hip hop. This compilation contains a wide variety of styles of tracks, from classic dance-floor fillers as well as lesser known delights. A more accessible diggers delight if you wish with an emphasis on quality track and not just songs worth having for a 2 second sample.
Featuring a much more worldly selection than its predecessors - tracks by the multi platinum selling War to Sylvia ( Founder of Sugarhill Records) sit side by side with world music underground icons like C.K. Mann and Francisco Aguabella. This volume is the 5th in a series of compilations that appears to have the widest appeal of all BBEs compilations and proves to be even better by the fact that there is a bonus mixed CD by the one and only Dj Spinna!

Crate-diggers and vintage record fanatics of the 21st century, listen up - a never released soundtrack album from an ill-fated 1970's action flick, rediscovered earlier this year, will hit stores this summer.A spokesperson for media-shy jazz-funk outfit Cadillac Jones announced at a weekend press conference that the non- malicious mislabeling of the original tapes led to the soundtrack's estimated twenty-seven year disappearance. Feature film "The Big Takedown" was reportedly shelved by an unnamed major studio when producers exceeded their budget by twice the originally allotted amount and were, by all reports, nowhere near done with the picture. Attempts to raise additional capital failed and the plug was pulled on the project once and for all."It was tough on the guys in Cadillac Jones as they'd put months into that record," said the spokesperson for the band, going on to say jokingly that "it was the '70s, you know, so it's all a bit blurry, but there was no shortage of parties and heaven knows what else, so we, you know, got on to other projects." Details on how the tapes resurfaced are vague, and the band's representative commented only that an old friend at the now-defunct studio found them in a box he carried out when the Hollywood powerhouse declared bankruptcy in 1982. (Although it gathered dust for close to three decades, it appears as though the soundtrack album was the only piece of "The Big Takedown" that was submitted on time). This same associate was able to guide Cadillac Jones through the process of buying back the rights to the album, which has finally, after some thirty years, been mixed and mastered. The only other trace of "The Big Takedown" to resurface is conceptual artwork by J. Schiavone, which will appear on the cover of the soundtrack release. Several of Schiavone's "Big Takedown"-related pieces were returned with the original recordings.

Jorge Ben (now known as Jorge Ben Jor) represented the Rio wing of Brazil's Tropicalia movement. Born to an African mother, Ben embraced African and African-American music - especially funk and soul - far more successfully than other Tropicalia stars. This, along with the insistent presence of his melodic guitar lines, make his music readily accessible to U.S. listeners. In the early 1960s, Ben recorded as a samba artist, gaining international reknown as a songwriter when Sérgio Mendes covered his song, "Mas Que Nada." Later, along with contemporaries such as Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil and Gal Costa, he pioneered the revolutionary "Tropicalia" movement, which blended American blues, rock and roll and pop kitsch into the already potent musical stew of Brazilian pop. Later still, Ben became known as the driving force behind Brazil's homegrown funk/soul scene, and was an inspiration for the Black Rio soul scene. Ben's intimate, playful vocals and alluring acoustic guitar give him a unique, seductive sound. Like many other Brazilian MPB artists, his best recordings were made before the late 1970s, although his later commercial pop-rock recordings have more integrity than similar efforts by contemporaries such as Gilberto Gil.

“ A samba soul classic from Jorge Ben quite possibly his greatest album ever, and a true treasure through and through! The tunes explode with an amazing sense of energy driven by Jorge's great guitar and vocals, plus key percussive efforts from Trio Mocoto whose sounds here are simply amazing, and create a unique undercurrent of funk. This is the album that set a whole generation on fire, and it's probably still one of the most-copied moments of Ben's long career. In contrast to the cerebral output of the Tropicalia camp in 1969, this album's much more visceral and personal yet no less revolutionary! First time on CD in the US and first time on CD in the world in over 15 years.

Trio Mocoto back in style, check it out
Twenty-six years between albums is no small gap, but Brazil's Trio Mocoto is no regular band. Since their split in 1975, all three have remained active in music, often at the contemporary end, and their experiences show on Samba Rock, whose first track, Voltei Amor, is almost a manifesto for the album, mixing some very swinging samba with electronica touches and even a bit of funky vocoder singing. But, as all things old are new again, their original sound from the '60s and '70s comes across as fresh as it did originally, with plenty of Fender Rhodes piano in the mix. As well as exploring Brazilian music, old and new, there's also a nod to North America on Kibe Cru, with its boogie-woogie piano bass, that makes you think it's about to break into a Leon Russell song, and its semi-spoken vocals a tip of the hat to rap. Still, the heart is the subtle delicacy of the samba with all three members (João Parahyba, Nereu Gargalo, and Luiz Carlos Fritz) contributing vocals, either alone or in unison. While most of the material is original, a cover of Jorge Ben's Adelita is driven by Fritz's jazzy guitar, with some kicking horns punctuating the percussion. Não Sei Porque brings in miniMoogs for a infectious '70s Brazil feel, while the instrumental Mocotó Beat has a smoky, blues-y groove. After so long away, most bands would be working hard to recapture a fraction of what they once had; Trio Mocoto move ahead with grace, funk, and style, as if there'd never been a break at all.

Following up the hugely cherished 'Si, Para Usted' compilation of rare socialist funk from the communist enclave of Cuba, Vol.2 presents sixteen further cuts of awesome revolutionary revelations picked from the government archives by Waxing Deep's Dan Zacks. Remarkably, for a period during Castro's reign, the state subsidised widespread musical education, even going as far as paying musicians a living wage, unconnected to their commercial success. Just imagine the implications if this happened in the capitalist western world! The fascinating sleevenotes present a wealth of eye-opening information, but it's the music that will leave you even more gobsmacked. Los Rápidos 'Safari Salvaje' initially sounds uncannily like Vic Reeves in club singer mode before tearing into a devastating funksoul groove and building to an intensely brilliant drum solo in the closing stages, while the cheeky organ, blazing brass and stupendous percussion of Grupo Monumental's 'Tremendo Tremendo' will have you booking your next holiday to whatever warehouse this solid gold came from! Plus, there's super slick disco from Juan Pablo Torres on 'Y Aparecio El Trombon', charming exotica from Sonopop on 'Vanguardia Y Juventud', fuzzy psyche funk from Los Llamas on 'Siboney' and legendary hip-grippin son on Hilario Durán's El Son De Victoria'. Due to the fact that this music was never treated with the care it deserved by the Cuban government, the quality of the recordings is astonishingly good, and regardless of time or location this music simply begs for a space in your collections.

Badass funk from this obscure 70s band – one who play here with a really wicked edge to their groove!
At some level, the sound is right up there with some of the bigger ensemble funk acts of the time – particularly that Mercury Records generation who were tightening things up from the indie years of the earlier part of the decade. Yet there's also some rougher edges that really make the record great – some offbeat production touches, and weird raspy sounds from some of the instruments – not to mention some hard and heavy breaks on some of the album's best tracks! Bits of moog round things out with some especially nice touches on a few tunes – and titles include "Just For You", "Step Out", "I Am Mine", "Where Did I Go From Here", "Nothing Can Stop My Loving You", "Nobody", "Love To Love", and "For A Taste Of Your Love".

1 Love To Love
2 I Am Mine
3 Step Out
4 Nothing Can Stop My Loving You

VA - Rhythmo De Cotonou 1: Vodoun Effect - Funk & Sato (2008)

“ If these 14 tracks are representative of the 500 or so that had to be sifted through from this West African band's prolific output between 1970 and 1983, then let's have the boxed set pronto! This is angular, punchy funk run through with vicious blasts of organ, and some of the finest oblique guitar riffs since Television. It's scary to consider that without the obsessive focus of label owner, Samy Ben Redjeb, this Benin band's music may never have seen the light of day again. “ Formed in 1966 and still sort-of existent today (at least they got together for a scene in Raymond Dumas’s forthcoming The Legends Of Afrobeat movie), the Orchestra Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou enjoyed a long run as Benin’s top band. Analog Africa boss Samy Ben Redjeb, who curated this compilation from hundreds of records he secured during years of crate digging in West Africa, overstates things a bit when he calls them the best-kept secret from that neck of the woods. After all, they have already been the subject of two (currently out-of-print) collections on Soundway and Popular African Music; they’re the backbone of the recent African Scream Contest collection, also on Analog Africa; and their convulsive yet intricate “Minsato Le, Mi Dayihome” proved hard to top a few years back as the opener to Luaka Bop’s World Psychedelic Classics 3: Love’s A Real Thing. But if they’re not total unknowns, their reputation outside their homeland falls far short of the quality of their music, a fantastic synthesis of funk (known locally as jerk), Latin, rock, and various African styles with homegrown Sato and Sakpata rhythms derived from Vodoun ceremonies. Despite focusing on a single band, this set is as satisfying as any of the fantastic multi-band collections of ‘70s groove music from Nigeria, Ghana, Benin and Togo that have come out in recent years. And the circumstances under which The Vodoun Effect‘s contents were made and marketed could speak right to the heart of the rare groove shoppers and indie-rock nerds that comprise the record’s target audience here.

Redjeb’s projected two-volume excavation of Orchestre Poly-Rythmo’s ’70s legacy splits into two parts, a forthcoming album that covers their more popular recordings for the Albarika Store label and this one, which cherry-picks their recordings for various fan-run independent labels that the band made for extra cash while Albarika Store’s boss was out of town. Most of The Vodoun Effect’s tracks were pressed in editions of a few hundred at the dawn of Benin’s vinyl age, and they were generally recorded live with one or two microphones and a Nagra reel-to-reel tape machine in someone’s living room or backyard, often in between jet flyovers in the neighborhood near Cotonou’s airport. Such rough conditions didn’t result in unlistenable recordings; the set-up is perfect for capturing the essential tightness and incendiary chemistry of a well-drilled working band quite capable of balancing its own sound in front of the mic. Guitar, percussion, voices and horns weave in and out of the mix as they might have at a gig, with lead singers Lohento Eskill, Vincent Ahehehinnou and Amenoudji Vicky right up front delivering the insistent and quite indelible tunes, and Bernard “Papillon” Zoundegnon’s echo-drenched guitar and organ solos bequeathing the proceedings a marvelously trippy aura. The horns suffer most, often overloading the mics, but if you can deal with the distorted horn charts on you average Ethiopiques release, you’ll be fine with the in-the-red sax and trumpet punctuation on The Vodoun Effect.

Ironically, another hook that might reel in Western listeners is the whiff of failure that swirls around these tracks. They weren’t hits, and Redjeb admits in the liner notes that Eskill and band founder Melome Clement not only couldn’t remember some of these tunes when he played them back, they believed his compilations would flop in the contemporary Beninese marketplace. Despite the rare quality of these grooves and the band’s popularity, they’re hopelessly obscure – and undeserved underdog status is fool-poof discaholic bait. Consider this listener hooked.

The aforementioned notes help. The CD comes with a 44-page booklet full off photos and colorful tales of a Redjeb’s triumphs and travails in a country where a lot of label heads burned the stock that wouldn’t sell, leaving what’s left in the scorpion-infested backrooms of embittered business men and eccentric music lovers. As swell as the booklet is, it’s that music – rough, accomplished, passionate, catchy, and indomitably funky – that tells the story you’ll want to hear over and over again.

About Los Po-Boy-Citos

Los Po-Boy-Citos formed in the fall of 2006 in a Garden District living room in New Orleans, Louisiana. Armed with crates of boogaloo records and surrounded by New Orleans music in the streets and in the clubs, in a city whose very makeup is mixed up like gumbo, it seemed natural to cook up Spanish Harlem Latin funk and New Orleans soul. The result was Los Po-Boy-Citos, New Orleans Latin Soul. After the band went through several incarnations and cut its teeth in bars and clubs, on outdoor stages, and once on the sidewalk on Frenchmen Street, it went into the studio to work with veteran NOLA music producer Mark Bingham on its debut cd. New Orleans Latin Soul was released in October of 2008. Named OffBeat Magazine's Best Emerging Band of 2008, Los Po-Boy-Citos followed their debut's success with a year at clubs and festivals, then switched to analog! Their new single is a 45 rpm record, on slick black vinyl.
In April 2010, Los Po-Boy-Citos were recognized by the Gambit Weekly as the Best Latin Band in New Orleans. Los Po-Boy-Citos plan to boogaloo in New Orleans for some time.

Following on from last years hugely popular 'Stay On The Groove ' compilation of modern funk anthems, 'Let The Groove Move You ' picks up where the last left off with 20 more slices of funk made to make you move your butt. As with the first compilation, all of the tracks are written and performed by bands in the modern funk scene: those who are not just re-living but also re-defining the funk sound for a new generation. All the big hitters are present - Quantic Soul Orchestra, Breakestra, The Bamboos, Poets Of Rhythm, Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings and The New Mastersounds alongside lesser known artists such as Natural Self (Tru Thoughts/Breakin Bread), The Budos Band, Cookin' On 3 Burners, The Soul Snatchers and the Limp Twins. As well as the above, there are also a number of exclusives: making their appearance on CD for the first time. James Brown's legendary soul sister Marva Whitney comes correct with the amazing 'I Am What I Am': amazingly still sounding only 20 years old! Canada's Quartertones drop a sleazy slice of carchase funk: with UK b-boy DJ Format applying the brakes on the remix. You will also find the rarer-than-hens-teeth 'Wind Your Clock' by Naomi Davis: only 10 copies of this track exist as it was never commercially released: what a killer!

Compiled by UK DJ Patrick Forge, The Brazilian Funk Experience hooks into Patrick's personal love affair with the funky 70s Brazilian sound, digging deeper than deep into the respected EMI Odeon Label. Here he presents 20 solid gold Brazilian nuggets, most as rare as hen's teeth and on CD for the first time. Strangely every melody and jazz break sounds sooo familiar... might just be you've heard it on a radio show or at a club round London town. And it might just have been Patrick or one of his followers that was spinning tunes behind the decks at the time. So people, get on your Rio shoes and enjoy the grooves.

Andy Breslau described the Holmes Brothers' music as "gospel-infused doo wop funk," which pretty much captures the spirit and synthesis of their style. Combining old R&B, soul, and gospel, brothers Sherman and Wendell Holmes along with Popsy Dixon create a rich sound filled with lovely harmony. The intensity of the group's studio performances evokes a live feel, offering an inkling of what their performances at Lynch's in Manhattan must have sounded like during the '80s. Righteous! collects almost 75 minutes of material from the group's four Rounder albums, beginning with In the Spirit in 1990 and ending with Promised Land in 1997. The album kicks off with a bit of electric blues topped with a healthy dose of soul on "Got Myself Together," a song that jumps out of the gate at a gallop and holds to a steady gait for five minutes. Gospel-drenched pieces like "Promised Land," complete with electric guitar, will have non-believers singing along, while classics like "There Goes My Everything" combine classic soul with a touch of country. One also wouldn't want to miss the Holmes Brothers' takes on Tom Waits' "Train Song" and the Beatles' "And I Love Her." Breslau's liner notes, which travel back to the Holmes Brothers' residency at Lynch's, are both edifying and fun to read. While all of the albums the Holmes Brothers recorded for Rounder are worthy efforts, Righteous! offers a solid introduction to anyone who has missed out on their wonderful music.

Samba, Afro-Cuban jazz, or was it bossa nova? No sooner has the infectious mix of styles of Brazilian music begun its whirlwind around your ears than you start to lose your grip on the terminology. The Afro Samba, yet another Brazilian variant, which the singer Jorge Ben established during the rhythmic merry-go-round of the ‘60s and ‘70s, completes the cycle of confusion. Yet those who have heard “Mas Que Nada,” that huge hit for which artists such as Sergio Mendes and Dizzy Gillespie have recorded cover versions, will know the man behind this album, at least by name. Ben’s compositions and arrangements can only be compared to those of Jobim or Mendes in a rudimentary sense.

The Nite Liters were a legendary funky combo that provided the backing for some of New Birth's best albums – but on their own, they were even funkier, and had a sound that was part JBs, part Meters, and all funky! This album may well be the group's best – their last for RCA, and a set that really has them honing their edge incredibly. The drums are amazing, the keyboards great, and the horns have this quality that's both complex, yet right on the money – making for a richness in sound that really sets the group apart from their contemporaries. A few singers from The New Birth provide chorus vocals on a few tracks – but most of the set is instrumental, and the record's one we'd gladly stack next to our Meters albums on Josie or JBs classics on People.

A cool collection of 80s groovers from the legendary Mirage Records – a relatively short-lived imprint, but home to some real classics from back in the day! The Mirage approach was a crucial step in the post-disco years – a way of bringing some leaner sounds to the dancefloor by picking up on the best funk and club elements of the time – yet also fusing the whole groove into some soulful leads that often put Mirage right in the middle of the mainstream too!

"The follow-up to the breakthrough Headhunters album was virtually as good as its wildly successful predecessor: an earthy, funky, yet often harmonically and rhythmically sophisticated tour de force. There is only one change in the Headhunters lineup — swapping drummer Harvey Mason for Mike Clark — and the switch results in grooves that are even more complex. Hancock continues to reach into the rapidly changing high-tech world for new sounds, most notably the metallic sheen of the then-new ARP string synthesizer which was already becoming a staple item on pop and jazz-rock records. Again, there are only four long tracks, three of which ("Palm Grease," "Actual Proof," "Spank-A-Lee") concentrate on the funk, with plenty of Hancock's wah-wah clavinet, synthesizer textures and effects, and electric piano ruminations that still venture beyond the outer limits of post-bop. The change-of-pace is one of Hancock's loveliest electric pieces, "Butterfly," a match for any tune he's written before or since, with shimmering synth textures and Bennie Maupin soaring on soprano (Hancock would re-record it 20 years later on Dis Is Da Drum, but this is the one to hear). This supertight jazz-funk quintet album still sounds invigorating a quarter of a century later."

Despite the cash-in title, Pulp Fusion is an intriguing compilation of mostly obscure jazz tracks that have been sampled by hip-hop and dance musicians over the years. Besides the delight inherent in spotting the sample, the songs work excellently by themselves, including Herbie Hancock's "Hang Up Your Hang Ups," Reuben Wilson's version of "Inner City Blues," Lonnie Smith on "Afrodesia" and the Pointer Sisters' "Don't It Drive You Crazy."

"The late Leon Thomas was a vocalist who has proven to be influential among jazz and blues saxophonists, guitarists, and pianists, who've admitted their debt to his innovation. However, though there are many jazz and blues vocalists who have benefited from his style as well, he is seldom acknowledged for his highly original — and idiosyncratic — contribution to them. One can only speculate as to why, though Thomas' full-throated style which employed everything from yodels and Joe Turner-ish growls and shouts may have been too wide for anyone to grasp in its entirety without overtly sounding as if they were aping him. At the time of this reissue (2001), the only other Leon Thomas titles available under his own leadership were a European best-of collection and the inferior live album (badly edited), Sunrise on Gold Mountain. Blues and the Soulful Truth is among the artist's most enduring performances, either as a leader or sideman. There is his trademark, otherworldly modal improvisation on Gabor Szabo's exotica classic 'Gypsy Queen,' the deep, greasy gutbucket, funky blues of 'Let's Go Down to Lucy' and 'L-O-V-E,' and the traditional tune 'C.C. Rider' — though Thomas' arrangement is anything but — among a lengthy, eight-song set. Perhaps the most revealing examples of his singularity is his ability to interpret a song like John Lee Hooker's 'Boom, Boom' as funky, jazzed-out, angular R&B — enabled mightily by the saxophone stylings of Pee Wee Ellis and the criminally under-appreciated pianism of Neal Creque and the wild violin of John Blair — after coming out of a pop-oriented soul tune such as 'Love Each Other,' written with a groove prevalent among commercial jazz and R&B recordings of the time, both sounding sincere, authentic, and completely full of the singer's presence. Indeed, on the aforementioned 'Gypsy Queen' or his own 'Shape Your Mind to Die,' Thomas inhabits his material fully, as if nobody ever had ever sung or heard these songs and would ever sing them again. Also, the production innovation and percussive touches many of these tunes have yet to be repeated (Pharoah Sanders, Thomas' previous employer who introduced the singer to the world, adopted some of the artist's percussive techniques permanently), like the firecrackers raining against Airto Moreira's drums and Larry Coryell's ethereal guitar riffs, or the use of a 'prepared' vibraphone and coat hangers in 'China Doll,' as they slip against the singer's wail and moan, and the elegant stick and brushwork of Bernard 'Pretty' Purdie. In sum, Blues and the Soulful Truth (Which does echo Oliver Nelson's Blues and the Abstract Truth in vision as well as title), is a tour through the depth and dimension of Thomas' mind-blowing abilities as a singer in a wide range of African American musical traditions, proving at the time, and now again, that he was far more than a free jazz singer. Indeed, the artist not only was a stylist of originality, but a composer, arranger, ethnomusicologist, and a singer of startling beauty and power — no matter the song. This album is a singular achievement, even among the fine recordings in Thomas' own catalogue, and should be considered first by those curious enough to look into his work — you won't be disappointed no matter what you find, but this one will take you places you never anticipated going."
