"When at 13 she enrolled at Roberto Menescal's guitar academy, Wanda Sá (also known as Wanda de Sah), a successful bossa nova artist, was spotted by Ronaldo Bôscoli and invited to appear on the programs Dois no Balanço (TV Excelsior) and O Fino da Bossa (TV Record). Starting her professional career at 19 with Wanda Vagamente (1964), one of the earliest arranging assignments by Eumir Deodato, Sá launched 'Inútil Paisagem' (Tom Jobim/Aloysio de Oliveira) and the earliest compositions by Edú Lobo, Francis Hime, and Marcos Valle. The album, launched at the Fino da Bossa show (at the Paramount Theater in São Paulo), was a success (having been reissued in Japan in the decade of the 2000s) and had a hit with 'Vagamente' (Roberto Menescal/Ronaldo Bôscoli). By the end of the same year, she joined Sérgio Mendes' Brasil '65 (with Rosinha de Valença and Jorge Ben Jor), realizing successful shows in Brazil and the U.S., where Brasil '65 was recorded (with the participation of Bud Shank and the Sérgio Mendes Trio). She also recorded in the U.S. the solo Softly and performed both in Brazil and the U.S. with the Sérgio Mendes Trio. In 1966, she returned to Brazil where she did shows with Baden Powell, Vinícius de Moraes, Mièle, Luís Carlos Vinhas, and the Bossa 3. In 1969, Sá participated in Paul Desmond's Hot Summer. Married to Edú Lobo from 1969 to 1982, a period in which she left the scene, Sá returned in the late '80s, performing shows with Roberto Menescal and Mièle, recording Brasileiras in 1994 with Célia Vaz. In 2000, she recorded with Luís Carlos Vinhas, Tião Neto, and João Cortez the CD Wanda Sá & Bossa Três with bossa nova classics and new compositions. Four successful seasons at the Sabbata Tokyo turned the CD Wanda Vagamente into a hit, having reached second place on the top charts. In 2001, she participated with Roberto Menescal, Marcos Valle, and Danilo Caymmi in the Fare Festival (Pavia, Italy)."

Assis Brasil Quarteto - Pedrinho (1979, remastered 2003)

Victor Assis Brasil was the best Brazilian jazzman of his generation, having being praised by international critics. He is said to have been more popular outside Brazil than in it and his style was strongly influenced by non-Brazilian musicians. This critically-acclaimed record captures Victor in 1979, during the last prolific period of his too short life, and features standards "It's All Right With Me", "Night And Day" and "'S Wonderful."

Brother of classical pianist João Carlos Assis Brasil, Victor was influenced by music from an early age, but only at 17 did he start playing the saxophone and seriously decide to pursue a music career. His interest in music grew while he hung out with other musicians at Beco das Garrafas, the home of bossa nova in the 50s and 60s. Victor studied with Paulo Moura, and became more and more interested in jazz, performing at an International Jazz Festival in Austria, representing Brazil. He also took part in a music competition in Berlin and won an award for best solo performer. In 1966, Victor recorded his first LP, "Desenhos", which today is regarded as a rare gem. Two years later, Victor released his second album and went to the U.S. to study harmony, arrangement and composition at Berklee, in Boston. In 1970, while vacationing in Brazil, he recorded "Victor Assis Brasil toca Antônio Carlos Jobim". Victor returned to Brazil in 1974; made several recordings, shows, and taught improvisation at the Brazilian Conservatory of Music. He died early, at 35, leaving a legacy that combines traditional jazz and Modern Brazilian music.

No one could have guessed that the crossover success enjoyed by Latin bandleaders Ray Barretto and Mongo Santamaria early in the '60s was going to pave the way for a parade of artists later in the decade. Mixing pop, jazz, and soul with plenty of Latin flavor, they recorded some of the most moving -- literally -- tracks of the early Aquarian age for a variety of labels later gathered under the Fania umbrella: Cotique, Tico, Alegre, and of course, Fania itself. The Bad Boogaloo: Nu Yorican Sounds 1966-1970 certainly isn't the first to chart the same territory (check Broasted or Fried and Nu Yorican Salsa Experience to start with), but it digs a little deeper than the rest, with great results. For instance, none of the boogaloo hits of the '60s appear here, although many of the artists are represented with great work (including Barretto, Joe Cuba, and Johnny Colon). Secondly, the obscure or left-field come through with excellent material, including Lenni Sesar's scorching "Morris Park" and an instrumental called "Happy Soul with a Hook" by Dave Cortez (who earlier in the '60s had a hit with "The Happy Organ").

Released early in 1971, a few months after Come Together, their first album for Liberty Records, Workin' Together was the first genuine hit album Ike & Tina had in years; actually, it was their biggest ever, working its way into Billboard's Top 25 and spending 38 weeks on the charts. They never had a bigger hit (the closest was their Blue Thumb release, Outta Season, which peaked at 91), and, in many ways, they didn't make a better album. After all, their classic '60s sides were just that -- sides of a single, not an album. Even though it doesn't boast the sustained vision of such contemporaries as, say, Marvin Gaye and Al Green, Workin' Together feels like a proper album, where many of the buried album tracks are as strong as the singles. Like its predecessor, it relies a bit too much on contemporary covers, which isn't bad when it's the perennial "Proud Mary," since it deftly reinterprets the original, but readings of the Beatles' "Get Back" and "Let It Be," while not bad, are a little bit too pedestrian. Fortunately, they're entirely listenable and they're the only slow moments, outweighed by songs that crackle with style and passion. Nowhere is this truer than on the opening title track, a mid-tempo groover (written by Eki Renrut, Ike's brilliant inverted alias) powered by a soulful chorus and a guitar line that plays like a mutated version of Dylan's "I Want You" riff. Then, there's the terrific Stax/Volt stomper "(Long As I Can) Get You When I Want You," possibly the highlight on the record. Though they cut a couple of classics over the next few years, most notably "Nutbush City Limits," the duo never topped this, possibly the best proper album they ever cut.

Brick's second album release on the Bang imprint had the Atlanta-based funk ensemble standing on solid ground. "Dusic" came charging onto the charts and dancefloors nationwide, and for good reason. With falsetto-layered vocals and a gritty, soulful backing track, "Dusic" worked its way to number two on the R&B charts. With lead vocals sung in unison, "Ain't Gonna Hurt Nobody" came right behind it with plenty of locomotion and stamina. The single popped the Top Ten at number seven inside of 15 weeks. The self-contained band had to its credit the reed and brass virtuoso Jimmy Brown. On "Happy," Brown improvises his way through each verse, switching from one reed instrument to brass and back again -- an outstanding horn exhibition on this appropriately titled number. The entire album is superb.

The Meters - Here Comes The Meter Man 2CD (2011)

The Meters defined New Orleans funk, not only on their own recordings, but also as the backing band for numerous artists, including many produced by Allen Toussaint. Where the funk of Sly Stone and James Brown was wild, careening, and determinedly urban, The Meters were down-home and earthy. Nearly all of their own recordings were instrumentals, putting the emphasis on the organic and complex rhythms. The syncopated, layered percussion intertwined with the gritty grooves of the guitar and organ, creating a distinctive sound that earned a small, devoted cult during the '70s, including musicians like Paul McCartney and Robert Palmer, both of whom used the group as backing band for recording. Despite their reputation as an extraordinary live band, the Meters never broke into the mainstream, but their sound provided the basis for much of the funk and hip-hop of the '80s and '90s.

50 tracks representing all of the New Orleans funksters output for Josie Records from the late 1960's to the early 1970's. This fine 2CD reissue on Charly Records features The Meters three complete original albums "The Meters" (1969), "Look-Ka Py-Py" (1970) and "Struttin'" (1970) plus singles and rarities from their much-sampled catalogue. What makes this set unique is that this is the first time that The Meters' entire body of work released on Josie Records becomes available in one collection.

The attentive fan might recognize there's been pres made of The Meters collections before, with an anthology of their Josie years by group J** coming closest. Note that this 2011 reissue features different tracks. While the three albums are the same, this release adds at least 8 songs including the singles and rarities on disc 2. Enjoy!

Tito Puente - Greatest Hits

Tito Puente - Greatest Hits
MP3 320 kbps CBR 65:41 min 157 MB
Jazz, Latin Jazz Fania Records 19 April 2011

Tito Puente released over 150 albums in his stellar career. He and his orchestra were all about the dancers. He was also a musicians' musician in a time when a great band could actually thrive without radio play. The term ''Greatest Hits'' usually applies to the most commercial songs in a bands repertoire, in Tito's case let's just say they are a collection of some of his most extraordinary work. Twenty remastered tracks strong, this compilation sizzles from the opening round with classics such as ''Oye Como Va,'' ''Para Los Rumberos'' and many more. Covering more than one label and hosting a variety of great vocalists, Tito straddles the Mambo era and Jazz with equal ease. The album closes with the dancers favorite ''Ran Kan Kan'' to leave the dancers and also listeners chanting for just ''one more.'' Never-before released! Not be missed!
