Street Songs became the biggest R&B album of that year, staying at the top of the charts for 20 consecutive weeks and since then the album has gone multi-platinum.
The sound quality is amazing, much clearer than the first copies of this CD in the mid-80s.The songs are all here!
There's the bass-heavy "Give It To Me, Baby", the street anthem "Ghetto Life" (which surely inspired a lot of the hip-hop that was soon to follow),the nice slow jam "Make Love To Me", and the reggae-tinged "Mr. Policeman", which, must have inspired latter rap songs about police brutality.
Then there is the masterpiece, the New Wave-styled "Super Freak", which still sounds fresh and new after all these years. The duet with Teena Marie "Fire and Desire" is steamy and intense, even if they do go a little overboard, vocally. "Call Me Up" is sexy and to the point, while "Below The Funk(Pass The J)" is a perfect album closer, another badass street anthem that reflects the mood of the album. Fortunately, the fun doesn't end there.
At the end of this first disc, there are bonus 12" versions of the hits "Give It To Me Baby" and "SuperFreak". The 7-minute remix of "SuperFreak" is particularly fierce, with the catchy sing-along hook "SuperFreak, the girl's a SuperFreak....SuperFreak,the girl's a SuperFreak".
Rick James had already reached the top of the R&B charts numerous times before STREET SONGS, but this 1981 release was the crossover breakthrough that earned him pop stardom. This is where his mix of P-Funk grooves and Blowfly lyrics hitched ... Full Descriptionits wagon to some surefire pop hooks without losing any of the funk. The album is best remembered for its two enduring hits, "Give It To Me Baby" and "Super Freak," but the action doesn't stop there. James unleashes his inner Barry White on "Fire and Desire," a romance-dripping slow-jam duet with Teena Marie, and the tight, funky grooves of "Below the Funk" and "Call Me Up" are as irresistible as those of the album's better-known tracks. Oh, and just in case anyone wants to stop dancing long enough to think about it, STREET SONGS is supposedly a concept album about the street life of ladies of the night and their, um, business managers.

Fiesta Del Funk Naciente
VA - Sensacional Soul Vol.2
Artist: VA
Title Of Album: Sensacional Soul Vol.2
Year Of Release: August 11, 2009
Label: Vampisoul
Genre: Spanish funk, soul, r&b
Hard hitting Spanish funk, soul, r&b and moddish gems - the second volume of Sensacional Soul from the late 60s and into early 70s, even better than the first volume - and a treasure from the folks at Vampi Soul! The Spanish soul sound here is rugged and raw, usually with furious drums, gritty, usually Spanish language vocals and punchy bits of horn - some with fuzzed out guitar and organ grooves that give them more of a garagey r&b style. Whether it's primarily in a funk mode or more of a mod r&b dancefloor style, it's really exciting stuff all the way! Includes "Hey Hey Bunny" by Los Gatos Negros, "Sintonia En Soul" by Jae's Soul, "Bugulu" by Los Albas, "Soul" by Chus Martinez, "Rudi's In Love" by Los Bravos, "Limon Y Sal" by La Nueva Banda De Santisben, "Donkey" by Henry C Martin, "El Sol Es Una Droga" by Los Kifers, "No, No, No" by Los Pops, "Para Siempre" by Wagon, "I'm Walking High" by Evolution", "El Fuegy" by Los 5 Diablos and much more. 32 tracks on 2CDs with a thick booklet of notes & photos.

Legend has it that, in the mid-sixties, James Brown's exposure to West African highlife musicians, such as Orlando Julius and Tony Allen, led him to transform his already potent brand of soul into a new music now referred to as funk. Likewise, during his 1969 trip to the United States, Fela Kuti's introduction to American funk and soul, in particular the Godfather’s own music, compelled him to reshape his highlife jazz into a controversial new style he would call afrobeat.
Noticing this undeniable link, the Souljazz Orchestra thus decided to bridge the gap between the worlds of funk and afrobeat, all the while staying open to the exploration of related genres, from boogaloo to soul, from highlife to jazz. Combined with lyrics touching on politics and spirituality, the resulting music is raw and dirty afrofunk like you've never heard before.
Formed in 2002, the Ottawa-based band has since had the honour of sharing the stage with Femi Kuti, Dele Sosimi (of the Egypt 80), Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, Etta James, Alpha YaYa Diallo, John Lee Hooker Jr., and more. The group has toured across the Canadian nation, from Halifax's Atlantic Jazz Festival to Calgary’s Afrikadey. Now, with international dates in the works, the Souljazz Orchestra is set to bring its earthquaking afrofunk sound to the rest of the world.
The group released its latest album, Freedom No Go Die, in September of 2006. This high-energy release features the vocal stylings of Rwandan/Burundian musician Mighty Popo, as well as those of soul sisters Marielle Rivard and Alanna Stuart. The album has since created quite a stir on the international DJ scene: "firing horns, funky keyboards and polyrhythmic beats to rock dance floors" enthused Straight No Chaser, "a sound as tight as the power fists that adorn the cover" raved Exclaim. IDJ has also sung the album’s praises: "A marching groove and firing horns evoke not only the spirit of a certain Mr. Anikulapo-Kuti, but also a packed shrine going nuts. Amazing stuff." The listeners of Gilles Peterson’s BBC radio show actually voted the album’s opening track, Mista President, as one of the top ten tracks of the year.

A fantastic bunch of grooves -- and one of the best installments in our favorite compilation series ever! The genius DJs at Hamburg's Mojo Club have always had a great ear for a song -- and that ear gets better and better with each new compilation. This package is a brilliant assortment of tunes that runs from heavy funk to sweet soul to funky jazz and groovy 60s tunes. There's loads on here that you've probably forgotten about -- or just plain never heard -- and the pacing of the compilation means that the tracks maintain a very cool vibe throughout, making the set always a fresh listen for the discerning ear!

- Clique Aki:
Originally a jazzy trip-hop act, The Herbaliser now makes a kind of horn-drenched hyperfunk. The songs- and they are real songs, not just tracks- reference everything from Tower of Power and Chicago to Aretha Franklin and Quincy Jones.
In this release, The Herbaliser is moving away from rap. There are only three rap tracks on the CD and they are bearable. The rest of the album is all excellent, with great instrumentals and vocal tracks.
The formula is an energetic and upbeat mix of hip-hop and funk, with a lot of inspiration/sampling from seventies film music and fifties big band sound.
Opening is the title track which is largely a funky instrumental with darting horns, organ and an incredible bassline. There are 3 other instrumentals; "The next spot" (with an almost Afrobeat feel), the awesome "Amores Bongo" (a delightful guitar/horn/percussion mix that sounds like it should be some movie soundtrack), and the more mellow "Blackwater drive".
Five songs feature vocalist Jessica Darling, "On your knees", "Can't help this feeling", "You're not all that", "Clap your hands" (these four are retro funk ditties James Brown/Sly & The Family Stone-style) and the sprawling 6 minute plus opus "Stranded on Earth" (a psychedelic sounding number with deep bass, Hip hop beats kicking in about 2 minutes in, and Jessica's few vocals coming in the final 2 minutes). This song is simply amazing!
There are a trio of Hip hop numbers "Just won't stop" features Yungun aka Essa, a Rap touching on the changes technology has brought to social life (Youtube, Myspace, etc). "Street karma (a cautionary tale)" is a midtempo rap with a creepy vibe, horns and sound effects (a car revving, kids playing, etc) adding to the drama. It features Jean Grae on vocals, and is a tale about the violent life on the streets. "Game set and match" features More or Les in a spitfire Rap delivery and some nice guitar effects.

Beneath the curiously comic name, cabaret presentation and funky instrumentals, lurks a band of the sort that used to be signed by major record labels. A band whose sound and style develop from one album to the next, a band whose career evolves and matures. If The Voodoo Trombone Quartets debut was described as a "future cult classic" (Future Music) then Again must surely be, simply, a classic. The long-awaited and keenly anticipated second album from The Voodoo Trombone Quartet fulfills the tantalising promise of their progressively more polished 10" vinyl EPs: The Phantom (2007) and Vibrations (2008). Again showcases wonderful songwriting on tracks like So Innocent or South Westerly (the forthcoming summer single that has radio written all over it) and sees the band shake off their early ska tag. The songs here are at once accessible and positive without being either trite or corny. They are unashamedly grown-up pop, without being boring or middle aged. They have the confident smile of youthfulness playing across their faces; bold, bright funk; tight production and warm vinyl flavors and even include a reggae-tinged take on the Rocksteady Crews eighties b-boy anthem.

Press Release :
Back in 2000, West London's funky, forward-thinking, experimental hip-hop collective The Herbaliser released their acclaimed double-vinyl album Session 1. Recorded in raw and organic studio jams, these expansive instrumentals marked the group's evolution from studio boffins to full big-band line-up. The Guardian called the album "sterling proof that this kind of music invariably sounds better played by musicians than by a sampler" while Yahoo described it as an "effortlessly cool, super smooth journey around the set of an unmade Blaxploitation movie".
Almost a decade later, The Herbaliser are in the middle of another new musical evolution. On their 2008 album Same As It Never Was, founder members Jake Wherry and Ollie Teeba concentrated more than ever on classic soul-pop songwriting, with greater collaborative input from long-time horn players Ralph Lamb and Andy Ross, plus new vocalist Jessica Darling. Understandably, they now want to capture this latest live chapter on record.
And the title? Well as Session 1 was always meant to be the start of a series the second instalment had to be called Session 2, naturally. "Back when we recorded the first session we wanted to have a dоcument of what the band sounded like", says Jake, "but properly recorded in a studio environment, essentially doing what we do live but recorded really well. The boundaries are a bit less distinct now, because we are a lot more musical in our approach. There are still samples involved in our writing, but less than before".
Session 2 spans more than a decade of Herbaliser live favourites, from the underground beats and breaks of their 1997 album Blow Your Headphones to the more lush, soulful grooves of Same As It Never Was. "It's interesting that some of these songs are 12 years old, and some just one year old, yet it still feels coherent as an album", says Jake.
One recurring thread across the album is a clear love of cinematic moods and atmospheres - whether in funky, revved-up, infectious party grooves like "Geddim" and "Amores Bongo" or in psychedelic sci-fi epics like "Moon Sequence" and "Theme From Control Centre". This may be booty-shaking club music at heart, but many of these tracks are as dense and richly detailed as the classic movie scores of Quincy Jones, John Barry or Lalo Schifrin.
"One thing Ollie and I agreed when we started was we didn't want people to just drop a needle on one of our records and hear the same loop over and over, like many records in the 1990s", says Jake. "We wanted to have changes, like soundtracks or movie themes. With all our instrumentals, we're always writing music for scenes in imaginary films".
Although Jake and Ollie have worked with many MC's and a couple of singers in recent years, they kept the arrangements on Session 2 as pure instrumentals. Future instalments in the series, Jake says, will concentrate on The Herbaliser's strong track record of vocal collaborations. But this album is a true sequel to Session 1 in both sound and spirit.
"The first Session record was instrumental as well, because we didn't have a singer then, so we thought it was important to carry on that tradition," says Jake. "We wanted to create a sound both onstage and live that synchronised both live instruments as well as samples."
Session 2 is another Herbaliser classic, the sound of an ever-evolving band at the peak of their powers. Forget the old Hollywood rule: sometimes a sequel can be just as good as the original.

Since their birth in 1977, the pioneering Dirty Dozen Brass Band has extended the New Orleans Second Line tradition into rock, R&B, funk, and hip-hop. Led by trumpeter-vocalist Gregory Davis, the nonet is joined by several cutting-edge guest artists. Dr. John lends his Crescent City piano chords and deep-south vocals on "Everything I Do Gon' Be Funky" and the festive "Big Chief." The gravel-voiced John Bell, of Georgia-based jam band Widespread Panic, chimes in on the hip-shaking "Walk on Gilded Splinters." Robert Randolph's ghostly steel pedal guitar casts its spell on Aaron Neville's "Tell It Like It Is," and the young diva Norah Jones's tender Texas twang graces the ballad "Ruler of My Heart." DJ Logic's turntable scratches provide the gumbo on the autobiographical "We Got Robbed," and the Mississippi-born blues bard Olu Dara adds his Delta-derived voice to "Junko Partner." Throughout the CD, the DDBB brings Big Easy grooves into the 21st century. --Eugene Holley Jr.

Tower Of Power - Oakland Zone (2003)
Artist: Tower Of Power
Title Of Album: Oakland Zone
Year Of Release: April 22, 2003
Label: Or. Music
Genre: R&B, Funk, Jazz, Soul, Blues
Tower of Power's 28th CD (according to their Web site) just may be their best ever. This CD marks the return to the studio of legendary T.o.P. drummer David Garibaldi. This is his first studio CD with the band in many years. Garibaldi and bassist Francis Rocco Prestia are unquestionably the best 1-2 punch in music. With Jeff Tamelier on guitar and the great Roger Smith on keyboards, this is about as talented a rhythm section as you will find anywhere in the music business.
Larry Braggs brings a vocal talent to this CD that is absolutely superior! His vocals will invite comparisons to many of the greats, past and present. He has a phenomenal range, especially in the upper registers.
The legendary horn section is as strong as ever with Iron Mike Bogart and Adolfo Acosta handling trumpet/trombone/flugelhorn chores, Stephen "The Funky Doctor" Kupka on baritone sax, newcomer Tom E. Politzer producing some mighty fine solos on tenor and alto sax, flute, and clarinet, and bandleader Emilio Castillo providing 2nd tenor sax and vocals.
In addition, six former Tower of Power members collaborated on this CD: Santana's Chester Thompson, Saturday Night Live's Lenny Pickett, original member Skip Mesquite, Herman Matthews, Brent Carter, and Norbert Stachel. Huey Lewis also contributed to this CD.
The music consists of classic funk grooves and one soulful ballad. The horns are right up front, very crisp, the execution perfect--tighter than a mouse's ear! The rhythm section propels the groove and the instrumental soloists add the icing to the cake, all providing the backdrop for Larry's talented vocals.
This is a powerful in-your-face CD! Ain't no sissy stuff here. Not for wimps! Pure funk and soul as only Tower of Power can do it. On a big stereo, this CD will knock you out!

Album Description
-------------
While Maceo Parker is known around the world for his signature alto sax sound - an instantly recognizable blast of rhythmically-charged soul - he has never before been heard fronting a big band. The former James Brown sideman and P-Funk all-star rises to that challenge on `Roots & Grooves', his triumphant collaboration with Germany's WDR Big Band Cologne.
Recorded live on tour in Europe in February and March 2007, this dynamic two-CD set captures the iconic sax man in concert with the acclaimed 18-piece band, under the direction of arranger Michael Abene. On the first disc, they pay tribute to Ray Charles with lush orchestrations of Charles classics like "What'd I Say," "Hit The Road Jack," "I'm Busted" and "Hallelujah, I Love Her So." The second disc, which features the slamming rhythm tandem of drummer Dennis Chambers (formerly of P-Funk, currently of Santana) and bassist Rodney "Skeet" Curtis (formerly of P-Funk and Maceo's own band), consists of expanded big band renditions of Maceo originals, including "Off The Hook," "Uptown Up," "Shake Everything You Got" and his early `70s funk anthem "Pass The Peas."

Four CDs, six albums (seven if you split out Solus / The Inner Source) that represent the kind of artistic freedom to explore that was rare, even at a time when major labels were supporting fusion and progressive rock. That Duke was able to record this prolifically over such a relatively short period of time—the first session was in April, 1971, the final one January, 1976—while he remained busy as a sideman with Cannonball Adderley and Frank Zappa and as an increasingly in-demand session player, gave him the opportunity to evolve at the kind of pace that's difficult to match today. / read entire article here /

An amazing package of work from George Duke - 6 of his legendary fusion albums for MPS Records, including the never-reissued double-length set Solus / The Inner Source! That incredible album is worth the price of the package alone - as it begins with some sublime trio work from Duke, rooted in jazz but already stretching out in amazing ways - then moves into some even hipper Latin-styled grooves, with Jerome Richardson on reeds and Luis Gasca on a bit of trumpet! Other albums in the set are equally great - and trace Duke's evolution from straighter jazz into funky freer fusion and soul - an incredible musical shift that's presented on the albums Faces In Reflection, Feel, I Love The Blues She Heard My Cry, The Aura Will Prevail, and Liberated Fantasies - each of them classics in their own right, presented together wonderfully here in this complete MPS package! The set is amazing - with a whopping 64 titles in all, and complete notes on all the music - including some recollections from Duke himself.

The man is a complete musician : good songwriter, arranger, producer and...performer. Wether he hoes on the Grand piano or through his massive samples library, Duke has fully integrated sixty years of Jazz music into one album. Some of the songs are pure jazz rock, instrumental beauties(specially "No greater love" with Dennis Chambers on drums), some others are funk grooves with vocals, but lean towards nicely harmonised melody lines (check "411" and "money"). If you like Quincy Jones's "Back on the block", then you'll love this CD.

Veteran keyboardist and producer George Duke remembers a time when funk was a powerful force not just in popular music but in social discourse. Frequently with a measure of wit and irony, and often with a strong dose of positivity at the core, titans like James Brown, Sly and the Family Stone and other funk icons of the `60s and `70s boldly addressed societal concerns ranging from poverty to racial disharmony to the battle of the sexes. Among the numerous treats on this album are not just the songs themselves but the roster of high-profile personnel helping to bring them to life many of them alumni of Duke's earlier bands and projects. Included on the guest list are bassist Christian McBride, percussionist Sheila E and trumpeter Michael Patches Stuart, to name a few. Along with Duke himself, the vocal crew includes Jonathan Butler, Howard Hewett, Teena Marie, Rachelle Ferrell and more.

The veteran keyboard/piano Master and producer (Anita Baker, Regina Belle, Rachelle Ferrell, Dianne Reeves, Marilyn Scott, Flora Purim...) returns with a very solid offering.
This is an album that is closest to his late 70's Epic albums (Reach for It, Dukey Stick etc..).
He surrounds himself with friends old and new on this set, including Sheila E. on percussion and backing vocals, a full horn section (including Michael "Patches" Stewart on trumpet and saxophonist Everette Harp), Jef Lee Johnson and Ray Fuller on guitars, and vocalists DeeDee Foster, Josie James, and Lynn Davis, as well as guest appearances by Leon "Ndugu" Chancler, Vinnie Colaiuta on drums, Wah Wah Watson, Lenny Castro on percussion, Christan McBride, Wayman Tisdale amd Michael Manson on bass and vocalists Rachelle Ferrell, Lynne Fiddmont, Teena Marie, Terry Dexter, Howard Hewett, Jonathan Butler.
A crowd-pleaser with a warm personality, he also has a serious side, and the dozen new songs here show the breadth of his artistry and awareness.
Tracks like "Everyday Hero" and the slowish masterpiece "Dukey Treats" have that P Funk tinged sound.
"Mercy" is a classic Jazz Funk style groove with a wicked instrumental break and keyboard solo following the vocal duet.
The complex instrumental "Images Of Us" is slightly more leftfield but is another Jazz Funk groover.
The gentler "I Tired To Tell You" and "Listen Baby" contrast with the frenetic Funk, as does the EWF sounding "Are You Ready".
Also on the mid-tempo side check "Somebody Laid It On Us" or the message based "Sudan", an indictment of the horrors of Darfur.
This is probably the best George Duke album for some time.
My favourite tracks: "Images Of Us", "Everyday Hero" and "Listen Baby".
"Dukey Treats" debuts at # 1 of The Billboard Top Contemporary Jazz chart and # 192 of The Billboard 200 Chart.
