The sound is smoother than smooth, with songs utterly divorced from their Teutonic origins. Most of the tracks float by as rather pleasant background fusion, halfway between Miles and the Rippingtons, but there are a few standout selections, including what could be an addition to the classic-rare-groove canon, "Mato Pato" by Kitty Winter Gipsy Nova.

Ramon Morris' lone Groove Merchant date remains one of the most potent fusion records of its time. An uncommonly soulful and nimble tenorman, Morris proves ideally matched to the jazz-funk idiom, and Sweet Sister Funk achieves a near-perfect balance between its mainstream and experimental leanings, forging a series of fierce grooves as imaginative as they are accessible. Recorded with a crack supporting unit including trumpeter Cecil Bridgewater and percussionist Tony Waters, the album radiates with positive energy -- it's a genuine shame Morris never again recorded as a leader, because the mind reels at the possibilities his muse might have pursued.

"Hotline" is a moderately paced funk cut with lyrics that are somewhat vague with regard to the song's message; the number peaked at #87 after seven weeks on the Billboard R&B charts. "Mutha Funk" is a pumpin' number which lives up to its title; however, the single only managed a #67 ranking after staying on the charts one week longer than the album's initial release. Most of the vocals are poorly arranged. As funky as this group's music is, many cuts are heavily doused with rock & roll.

Rainer Truby's Glucklich series pre-empted this interest by some years, however, reflecting the nu-jazz movement's appropriation of South American stylistics with a run of selections which drew upon both authentic works and more modern beats. Though earlier incarnations proved a little hit and miss, a paper thin distinction keeping the contrived from the more perspicuous tracks, this latest outing succeeds through a high hit rate of impressive contributions. The delicious "Fica Mai Com Deus" from Nicola Conte, and the switched tempo which creeps up from the Eddy and Dus remix of Les Gammas' "Outra Vida" are both typical of the infectious nature of this fusion of contemporary techniques with traditional instrumentation, while the emotive "Icarai" from Os Ipanemas, and Jorge Ben's 30-year old "Comanche" will hopefully act to inspire those who enjoy the music of Compost et al to dig a little deeper and source the plentiful vaults of original works. ~ Kingsley Marshall

Seu Jorge, Brazilian recording artist and star of The Life Aquatic, once called Brazilian soul and funk band União Black (pronounced OONyow BLACKee) “one of the greatest bands of the Black Rio Movement.” The thirteen member ensemble served as the backing band on the best-selling Brazilian funk record The Gerson King Combo and rose to national stardom on the strength of their James Brown and Earth, Wind, and Fire inspired instrumentals. Their debut album hit shelves in 1977, shortly after the group disbanded. Now, 30 years later, União Black are back with a brand new album recorded with Brooklyn, New York’s Embassy Sound Productions.

This is Margie Joseph's most successful and aesthetically pleasing album. It was written and produced by Fred Briggs (a.k.a. Coldwater Stone) and Daryl Carter and is a mixture of Stax and city slick R&B sounds; "Punish Me," "Sweeter Tomorrow," and "Temptation's About to Take Your Love" are prime examples. A remake lifts this LP above the average mark; Briggs and Carter transform the Supremes' "Stop! In the Name of Love" into an awesome deep soul classic. Beginning with a monologue titled "Women Talk," Joseph talks to her soon-to-be-gone man about his carousing before preceding into a lengthy Isaac Hayes-type arrangement that composers Holland, Dozier & Holland probably never envisioned. Margie's version is compelling and gripping. This album's #67 chart position suggests it must have caught on with quite a few record buyers.

Sondtrack “Quando o Carnaval Chegar” is composed, mostly, by Chico Buarque. It also has the participation of Maria Bethania, Nara Leao, among other great names of Brazilian music

- Clique Aqui: These sessions, recorded in 1966, were produced by Phil Spector. Spector's production chops and Tina Turner's voice were a match made in heaven. Turner possesses one of the strongest voices ever committed to wax; Spector envelops it in the grandest version of his Wall of Sound that he ever conceived. Besides the title track, Spector cut Ike & Tina redoing their first three chart hits, "A Fool in Love," "I Idolize You," and "It's Gonna Work Out Fine." Although it's a sacrilege to say so, these versions are better than the originals. Finally, Ike & Tina's performance of the obscure Holland-Dozier-Holland ditty "A Love Like Yours" is another phenomenal highlight. AMG.

One of the better records by this British funk ensemble from the 70s – with a sound that's tight and choppy, in the mode of early Average White Band, and with a very similar appeal. Lots of fast guitar work in a catchy groove – with rolling drums and bass underneath. Tasty funk cuts include "Party Time Is Here To Stay", "In The Can", "Out Of the Ground", "Paca Paco Wa Wa", and "The Kool Gent".

The uniquely close working relationship between Chris Wilson's Heartbeat label and Clement "Coxsone" Dodd's venerable Studio One label continues to produce some of the best reggae reissues around, and this one is no exception. This album consists of extended 12" mixes of old singles by such eminent Studio One artists as Lloyd Robinson, the Gaylads, the Silvertones and the great Ken Boothe; interestingly, the original tracks (mostly recorded between the late '60s and early '70s) seem to have new drum parts overdubbed onto them by the legendary drummer Leroy "Horsemouth" Wallace. The result is an interesting juxtaposition of old-school rock steady sounds and sharper, more modern drum parts laced with the occasional hint of synthesized percussion. It's a combination that works better than you might expect -- Lloyd Robinson's "Cuss Cuss" benefits greatly from Horsemouth's solid attack, and Ken Boothe's more ska-inflected "Come Running Back" is also nicely fortified by better bass definition and a crisp hi-hat sound. Most of these tracks are presented with dub versions appended; in other cases, the instrumental track is simply extended once the vocal part is finished. Those mixes are less effective than the real dub versions, but aren't a real liability. Recommended. ~ Rick Anderson
