After Many Things, released in 2008, and From Africa with Fury: Rise in 2011, A Long Way to the Beginning is the third album by Seun Anikulapo Kuti with Egypt 80, the 14 musicians big band he’s been leading since the death of his father Fela Kuti in 1997. It’s actually the third part of a triptych in which Fela’s youngest son, direct descendant of the afrobeat music style created by his father at the end of the 60’s, is back on the offensive regarding injustice in his country, Nigeria, where it still grows, with an intact anger and a music more powerful than ever.
The ingredients that have contributed to the success of the first two albums are warring beats, triumphant brass sections and burning lyrics but A Long Way to the Beginning is also distinguished by jazz pianist Robert Glasper’s contribution as a producer. While opening the spectrum of the sound, Glasper has made the participation of guests from the conscious American rap scene such as M1 (Dead Prez) or Blitz The Ambassador, a Ghanaian in New York, possible. The voice of German-Nigerian singer Nneka can also be heard on the track “Black Woman”. Finally, the French vibraphonist David Neerman adds his personal touch on two tracks (“I.M.F.” and “Black Woman”), enhancing his attention to details that, allied to its firepower, allows “A Long Way To The Beginning” to be a sophisticated and strong album.

The message of this record is political. Its mood is offensive. When asked about his commitment, Seun answers: “Being African means being politically involved. From the moment he wakes up in the morning, an African has a political attitude as everything he’ll be doing during the day will have something to do with survival.” In his book “A Long Way To Freedom” published when he was let out of jail at the beginning of the 90’s, Nelson Mandela wrote: “Being African in south Africa means being politically involved at birth.”

V.A - Afrika Underground - Jazz funk & fusion under apartheid

Sortie : 2002
Style : Jazz funk , Fusion

Tracklist :
1. Lament
2. Chapita - Dick Khoza
3. Half N Half - Zacks Nkosi
4. Thunder into Our Hearts - Jabula
5. I la I La
6. I Remember You - Mike Makhalemele
7. Way It Used to Be
8. African Live [Moto] - Dick Khoza
9. Wilderness - Zacks Nkosi
10. Musikana - Harari
11. Blues for Yusef - Lionel Pillay

Really wonderful stuff -- a collection of totally unique grooves that won't cross over with any of your other African funk compilations! The focus here is on jazz, not funk or soul -- and the set features a wealth of great tracks pulled from obscure South African records of the late 70s and early 80s. Funky fusion is definitely in command here -- and the overall feel of the tracks is similar to some of the best European funky fusion of the 70s, fused with elements of African percussion and instrumentation -- creating a true crossover of styles that crackles with a freshness that will have you coming back to this one again and again! Most tracks are instrumental -- and the grooves here are a lot more complicated than on your average James Brown-inspired African funk tracks, a mix of strident modal modes, and other choppier funkier riff-heavy tunes. Plus, the whole thing's put together with the righteous intelligence of all the other Counterpoint titles -- with great notes, incredible sound, and an approach that will easily take you to a whole new musical world! Titles include "I Remember You" by Mike Makahalemele, "Half N Half" by Zacks Nkosi, "Chapita" by Dick Khoza, "Lament" by Movement In The City, "Blues For Yusef" by Lionel Pillay, "The Way It Used To Be" by Pacific Express, and "La I La I La" by George Lee Larnyoh.permalink

VA - Red Hot + Fela (2013)

VA - Red Hot + Fela (2013)

Artist: Various Artists
Title Of Album: Red Hot + Fela
Year Of Release: 2013
Label: Knitting Factory
Genre: Funk, Soul, Blues, World
Total Time: 1:18:19
Format: Mp3
Quality: CBR 320 kbps
Total Size: 188 mb

Here’s an idea: Listen to Red Hot + Fela blind — don’t look at the track list. Once you’ve done that, go back and compare what your eyes see and what your ears expect. They won’t necessarily be the same things. For example, while it’s not totally surprising when Kronos Quartet is rhythmically acute, you might not expect the string ensemble to push the beat of Fela Kuti’s bluesy “Sorrow Tears + Blood” so forcefully as they do backing TV on the Radio singers Kyp Malone and Tunde Adebimpe, with help from reeds player Stuart Bogie.

That artist listing is typical: Red Hot + Fela pays tribute to a man who typically hit the stage with a dozen pieces, so there’s a lot of teaming up here. There’s also the fact that Fela’s long grooves are perfect sites for making new connections as well as revisiting old pleasures. Nneka, Sinkane, Amayo and Superhuman Happiness transform “No Buredi” into driving synth-pop, losing nothing in the translation. And My Morning Jacket absolutely nails the groove on “Trouble Sleep,” with help from tUnE-yArDs’ Merrill Garbus and Brittany Howard of Alabama Shakes, achieving quiet, easy flight with quietly piercing solos. Part revue, part played-out mastermixing, this honors its musical source nicely, and proves how fecund Fela continues to be.

TRACKLIST:

01 Baloji & L’Orchestre de la Katuba [ft. Kuku]: “Buy Africa”
02 tUnE-yArDs, ?uestlove, Angelique Kidjo, & Akua Naru: “Lady”
03 Spoek Mathambo & Zaki Ibrahim: “Yellow Fever”
04 Nneka, Sinkane, Amayo & Superhuman Happiness: “No Buredi”
05 Just a Band & Childish Gambino: “Who No Know Go No”
06 My Morning Jacket, Merrill Garbus, Brittany Howard: “Trouble Sleep Yanga Wake Am”
07 Kyp Malone, Tunde Adebimpe, Kronos Quartet, Stuart Bogie: “Sorrow Tears and Blood”

War - War (1971)

War - War (1971)
Funk | EAC Rip | Flac + Cue + Log | covers
Avenue Records R2 71041 | 1992 | 260Mb

War's first album without Eric Burdon was a strange, imposing, and beautiful hybrid -- a bridge between their then-current work with Burdon and their roots, going back to the early '60s and their origins as the Creators and the Nightshift. Although it was never a hit -- topping out at number 190 on the charts -- or yielded any substantial AM radio hits, the album is musically imposing in its sheer breadth, and its boldness, melding the new and the best of the old update, incorporating songs, arrangements, and ideas that dated well back into the prior decade, and the group's origins as the Creators and the Nightshift. From the quietly soaring 1971-vintage opener "Sun Oh Son," the music drifts back into the heavily Memphis soul-influenced "Lonely Feelin'," updated slightly but basically a rousing '60s blues-cum-gospel number that somehow ended up a failed single off the album. From there the album goes totally into left field with the gospel-style "Back Home," featuring lyrics provided by no less a figure than the Animals' Hilton Valentine. "War Drums" is a killer showcase for Charles Miller's tenor sax, Dee Allen's percussion, and Lonnie Jordan's organ, and "Vibeka" is a haunting, slow, bluesy workout, inspired by romance, tragedy, and realization, showcasing composer Lee Oskar's blues harp and Howard Scott's guitar. "Fidel's Fantasy" gets into wholly experimental territory with its length, and the topical political message seems an oddity today, but there's no questioning its musical boldness. (allmusic)

1. "Sun Oh Son" – 5:57
2. "Lonely Feelin'" – 4:31

“This album was released 36 years ago. Listening to it now brings fond memories of an intensely creative period in my life. There was time to explore many styles of music, and there was time to experiment with new instruments and equipment. No computers, no MIDI - only a room crammed with guitars, drums, keyboards, and an 8-track tape recorder. I didn’t have a specific audience for the album, hence the variety of styles. Back then people would actually sit and listen to albums as a total experience. I started and ended the album with aggressive synthesizer music, but in between those songs I was inviting listeners to go for a ride. Looking back, I would say that the variety of styles is both the strongest and weakest aspect of the album. But that’s who I was and, to a degree, who I still am.“ - Don Muro, 2013

Album is part of this p-funk series because of Dewayne Blackbyrd McKnight's guitar worksThe Headhunters represented a major turning point for Herbie Hancock, whose approach to fusion became slicker and more commercial (though not without substance or integrity) with the formation of this popular band in 1973. Before that, the chameleonic pianist/keyboardist had been leading a daring unit called the Sextant, which fused jazz, R&B and rock with world music and took more than its share of chances. But regrettably, the Sextant's three albums for Warner Bros. were modest sellers at best, so in 1973, he disbanded the Sextant and formed the Headhunters. Employing saxman/clarinetist Bennie Maupin (a holdover from the Sextant), bassist Paul Jackson, Jr., drummer Harvey Mason and percussionist Bill Summers, Hancock made a point of being more accessible when he unveiled the Headhunters with his 1973 Columbia date Head Hunters. Fusing jazz with funk and rock, the album sold over a million copies and attracted many R&B and rock fans. In fact, Head Hunters even outsold Miles Davis' popular Bitches Brew. Defined by the catchy "Chameleon" (which was interpreted by jazz singer Eddie Jefferson in 1976 and sampled by various rappers in the 1980s and 1990s) and a funky remake of his 1962 boogaloo "Watermelon Man," Headhunters set the tone for subsequent Columbia projects with the Headhunters, including Thrust (1974), Man-Child (1975), Secrets (1976) and Sunlight (1977). By the end of the decade, the Headhunters were no more, and Hancock was turning his attention to everything from outright R&B to standards and acoustic post-bop. In the 1990s, Sony's Legacy label reissued most of the Headhunters' work on CD, and in 1998 the group reunited to record Return of the Headhunters!
