The Austrian musician and multi-talent Just Banks demonstrates his remarkable versatility in debut album “Under the Influence”: Hip-Hop, funk, jazz, breaks and a pinch of minimal house come together here in flowing and coherent whole. The musical frankness of the tunes is continued when various guest artists are invited to contribute vocals, solos or phrases.
This is an album that also reflects the development and background of a musician who started his career in the mid nineties and who has never been prepared to nail himself down to any one single genre since then. “Under the Influence” refers to all that wide range of contemporary musical genres Just Banks has opened himself to, explored, fallen in love with.
He spices a relaxed stew of downbeat, midtempo breaks and solid electronica on “Under the Influence” with vocals from the Blaktroniks, BluRum13 (as known from Dj Vadim & Ninjatune), Coppa, Kristina Lindberg (Laine), Veda36 and others.
In 2006 Just Banks engaged the talents of the Bay Area-based collective Blaktroniks, who came up with the catchy vocals for his first release on Etage Noir entitled “360 Degrees”.
“Under The Influence” is now his first full-length album and it also includes the title track of his most successful EP to date “Bust A Move”.

Album Notes
Aja West, producer of hybrid funk jazz and soul presents his long awaited masterwork, "Total Recall 2012". After leading super group The Mackrosoft through ten fantastically successful albums, Aja West takes a solo turn bringing along his most talented and prestigious friends.
Reggie Watts (Maktub/Soulive) co-writes and lends his incredible vocal styling to a slew of new funk pop jams. His sweet and strong voice has been compared to everyone from Chris Cornell to Marvin Gaye. The adventurous lyrics of "The Getaway" and "Out of Control" showcase Watt’s funky Sly Stone/D’Angelo type of vocal seduction at it’s absolute finest.
Composer Aja West keeps the production crisp and clean playing multiple instruments and easing in and out of the jams on vocoder and slinky effected vocals. Female sirens tempt the listener over the sparse groove of "How Many Lumps?" and "Penny in a Fountain" showcasing classic funky rhythm and blue.

Press Release :
"Tru Thoughts is easily one of the UK's best independent labels, regardless of whether its audience is energetically twitching on the dancefloor or bobbing about in a chilled boudoir" – BBC.co.uk
The first label compilation since Tru Thoughts celebrated its 10th Anniversary last year, 'Shapes 10:01' showcases an eclectic stable of musical talent with its collective eye on a new decade. And the future's looking, and sounding, bright.
'Shapes 10:01', a double CD collection spanning 24 tracks, features acclaimed current material from acts including Quantic and his Combo Bárbaro, The Bamboos, Kylie Auldist, Hint, Azaxx, Belleruche, Lizzy Parks and Stonephace; plus a generous pick of upfront exclusives; and reworks from the daddy of UK dance music, Ashley Beedle (X-Press 2), rapidly rising dubstep star Flux Pavilion and many more exciting musical talents.
The first track, Lizzy Parks' "Forever And A Day" (Eric Lau remix), is a twisted modern soul version that takes Parks' timeless sound into club turf and sets the tone for the happy integration of classic and cutting edge that characterises this compilation, and indeed the Tru Thoughts roster. The song makes its first, eagerly awaited CD appearance here, as does CD 2 opener "All That" (Natural Self Remix) - both having originally appeared on a 12" which sold out in days.
Previously unreleased goodies include Azaxx's downright mischievous dancefloor track "Play Again", Natural Self's Club Mix of "Days Get Brighter" from his recent album, 'My Heart Beats Like A Drum' and the Andy H remix of Kinny's "Petrified Dazed" feat. TM Juke. The combination of modern soul voice Kinny and Alice Russell co-writer TM Juke was already a bona fide winner, so when Andy H (aka the man whose day job has seen him sign the Haggis Horns and Kidkanevil to First Word records) got involved, the result was one hell of a track, which appears here as an exclusive.
Elsewhere, Hint's slant on bleeding edge UK funky, and the bassline-heavy dusty reggae vibes from Fredo, whose track "Squadron Face" is a straight-up exclusive, segue into the vocal bluesy jazz of Nostalgia 77 featuring legendary singer Julie Tippetts (nee Driscoll) and Motown-laced funk of The Bamboos and Kylie Auldist (note a first CD release for the crisp, streetwise re-edit by Ashley Beedle). And, paradoxically, one of the many inclusions here that define Tru Thoughts' commitment to future-looking sounds is an oldie, in the shape of Quantic's "Tell It Like You Mean It", a genre-leading piece that still sounds as progressive today as when it came out – wait for it – back in 2006.
Tru Thoughts A&R Robert Luis has once again compiled the perfect selections for home listening and DJing - and his commitment to fellow vinyl junkies continues, as 'Shapes 10:01' is also out on delectable Double LP + full 2CD.

There comes a time in every band when their sound crystallises; The Bamboos' fourth LP is one of the most exciting, original, vibrant and downright addictive albums of the coming year, and could easily see them catapulted beyond the confines of a genre to permeate the international mainstream musical consciousness... The Bamboos have arrived!
The Bamboos have been championed by Mark Lamarr (BBC Radio 2), Craig Charles, (BBC 6Music), Kenny Dope and Keb Darge, and are widely acknowledged as one of the best and tightest live bands on the planet. They are up there with Sharon Jones' Dap Kings in the danceability, authenticity and cool stakes and – oh ok, if you insist we go there – bandleader Lance Ferguson (aka production wunderkind Lanu) more than rivals your Mark Ronsons in the categories of 'busiest man in funk' and 'crossover cover version genius'... not to mention that all important tie-breaker, 'pop star looks'.
Their version of Kings Of Leon's King Of The Rodeo last year scored the XFM 'X-Posure Hot One' accolade, BBC 6Music daytime play, and nearly 150,000 YouTube hits. Their sound is soul and funk music for today, not mired in over-the-top adherence to simply copying what has been done many times before.
Vocalist Kylie Auldist's work on this album could truly be described as virtuoso, with tracks such as first single On The Sly, huge live number The Ghost, and the hard-hitting track Keep Me In Mind, that sees Kylie delivering possibly her best ever recorded vocal performance.
Other vocalists also add a major degree of excitement: adored US rapper Lyrics Born on Turn It Up; and mysterious Tongan, King Merc, on the incredibly catchy, fresh and unique You Ain't No Good. The brooding guitar figure, '60s soul drums and reverbed-out claps come across like the mutant love child of Phil Spector and Gnarls Barkley - setting up King Merc's soul-drenched vocal like a rough mounting for a fine stone.

Brothers Unlimited - Who's For The Young (1970)
A excellent album of southern funk — and darn rare, too! We know almost nothing about the Brothers, but they're a 14 piece combo with a tight ensemble funk sound that clearly shows roots of both the Memphis and Muscle Shoals scenes where the album was recorded! There's a lot of fuzzy guitar, almost in a Detroit Westbound mode — but the band's also got a sweetly southern funk style, with lots of organ bubbling underneath the tracks, punctuated by some pretty tight drum work that really makes the best cuts groove nicely in a more righteous take on the Stax/Volt sound of the time. A really wild one — and the kind of record that makes your jaw drop when you realize that some lucky A&R guy was actually able to get an underground soul album released by a major label!

The Meters — Zony Mash
For the first time anywhere—an entire album filled with vintage rarities and non-album B-sides by the Meters, all glittering gems by New Orleans’ wizards of slinky funk
- Clique Aqui:
Monk Higgins - Heavyweight (1972)
Quite possibly the best album ever from funky maestro Monk Higgins! The record's got some of his tighest work of the time — with plenty of tight breaks, nice keyboards, and soulful sax riffs — and Monk is going full-out on the arrangements, in the manner that he used for his best late Blue Note work with The Three Sounds or Blue Mitchell. The group's listed as "The Specialties" on the cover, and they vamp along nicely, like some of Monk's funky groups from the late 60s funky 45 days

Monk Higgins - Little Mama (1972)
An excellent batch of soulful and funky instrumental tracks — super-dope 70s work from funky arranger Monk Higgins! The album grooves in the best blacksploitation soundtrack mode — as Monk plays tenor sax and organ in the set, over slinky stepping arrangements that feature Paul Humphrey on drums, and Freddy Robinson on guitars — all coming together with Monk in a sweet LA style of early 70s funk! The groove is funky, yet laidback at the same time — and with some soulful backing vocals behind the instrumentation on a number of cuts — really the perfect sort of approach for a hip crime or action soundtrack.
