Since their birth in 1977, the pioneering Dirty Dozen Brass Band has extended the New Orleans Second Line tradition into rock, R&B, funk, and hip-hop. Led by trumpeter-vocalist Gregory Davis, the nonet is joined by several cutting-edge guest artists. Dr. John lends his Crescent City piano chords and deep-south vocals on "Everything I Do Gon' Be Funky" and the festive "Big Chief." The gravel-voiced John Bell, of Georgia-based jam band Widespread Panic, chimes in on the hip-shaking "Walk on Gilded Splinters." Robert Randolph's ghostly steel pedal guitar casts its spell on Aaron Neville's "Tell It Like It Is," and the young diva Norah Jones's tender Texas twang graces the ballad "Ruler of My Heart." DJ Logic's turntable scratches provide the gumbo on the autobiographical "We Got Robbed," and the Mississippi-born blues bard Olu Dara adds his Delta-derived voice to "Junko Partner." Throughout the CD, the DDBB brings Big Easy grooves into the 21st century. --Eugene Holley Jr.

Tower Of Power - Oakland Zone (2003)

Artist: Tower Of Power
Title Of Album: Oakland Zone
Year Of Release: April 22, 2003
Label: Or. Music
Genre: R&B, Funk, Jazz, Soul, Blues

Tower of Power's 28th CD (according to their Web site) just may be their best ever. This CD marks the return to the studio of legendary T.o.P. drummer David Garibaldi. This is his first studio CD with the band in many years. Garibaldi and bassist Francis Rocco Prestia are unquestionably the best 1-2 punch in music. With Jeff Tamelier on guitar and the great Roger Smith on keyboards, this is about as talented a rhythm section as you will find anywhere in the music business.

Larry Braggs brings a vocal talent to this CD that is absolutely superior! His vocals will invite comparisons to many of the greats, past and present. He has a phenomenal range, especially in the upper registers.

The legendary horn section is as strong as ever with Iron Mike Bogart and Adolfo Acosta handling trumpet/trombone/flugelhorn chores, Stephen "The Funky Doctor" Kupka on baritone sax, newcomer Tom E. Politzer producing some mighty fine solos on tenor and alto sax, flute, and clarinet, and bandleader Emilio Castillo providing 2nd tenor sax and vocals.

In addition, six former Tower of Power members collaborated on this CD: Santana's Chester Thompson, Saturday Night Live's Lenny Pickett, original member Skip Mesquite, Herman Matthews, Brent Carter, and Norbert Stachel. Huey Lewis also contributed to this CD.

The music consists of classic funk grooves and one soulful ballad. The horns are right up front, very crisp, the execution perfect--tighter than a mouse's ear! The rhythm section propels the groove and the instrumental soloists add the icing to the cake, all providing the backdrop for Larry's talented vocals.

This is a powerful in-your-face CD! Ain't no sissy stuff here. Not for wimps! Pure funk and soul as only Tower of Power can do it. On a big stereo, this CD will knock you out!

Album Description
-------------
While Maceo Parker is known around the world for his signature alto sax sound - an instantly recognizable blast of rhythmically-charged soul - he has never before been heard fronting a big band. The former James Brown sideman and P-Funk all-star rises to that challenge on `Roots & Grooves', his triumphant collaboration with Germany's WDR Big Band Cologne.
Recorded live on tour in Europe in February and March 2007, this dynamic two-CD set captures the iconic sax man in concert with the acclaimed 18-piece band, under the direction of arranger Michael Abene. On the first disc, they pay tribute to Ray Charles with lush orchestrations of Charles classics like "What'd I Say," "Hit The Road Jack," "I'm Busted" and "Hallelujah, I Love Her So." The second disc, which features the slamming rhythm tandem of drummer Dennis Chambers (formerly of P-Funk, currently of Santana) and bassist Rodney "Skeet" Curtis (formerly of P-Funk and Maceo's own band), consists of expanded big band renditions of Maceo originals, including "Off The Hook," "Uptown Up," "Shake Everything You Got" and his early `70s funk anthem "Pass The Peas."

George Duke - My Soul: The Complete MPS Fusion Recordings

From All About Jazz.com:
----------
Four CDs, six albums (seven if you split out Solus / The Inner Source) that represent the kind of artistic freedom to explore that was rare, even at a time when major labels were supporting fusion and progressive rock. That Duke was able to record this prolifically over such a relatively short period of time—the first session was in April, 1971, the final one January, 1976—while he remained busy as a sideman with Cannonball Adderley and Frank Zappa and as an increasingly in-demand session player, gave him the opportunity to evolve at the kind of pace that's difficult to match today. / read entire article here /

An amazing package of work from George Duke - 6 of his legendary fusion albums for MPS Records, including the never-reissued double-length set Solus / The Inner Source! That incredible album is worth the price of the package alone - as it begins with some sublime trio work from Duke, rooted in jazz but already stretching out in amazing ways - then moves into some even hipper Latin-styled grooves, with Jerome Richardson on reeds and Luis Gasca on a bit of trumpet! Other albums in the set are equally great - and trace Duke's evolution from straighter jazz into funky freer fusion and soul - an incredible musical shift that's presented on the albums Faces In Reflection, Feel, I Love The Blues She Heard My Cry, The Aura Will Prevail, and Liberated Fantasies - each of them classics in their own right, presented together wonderfully here in this complete MPS package! The set is amazing - with a whopping 64 titles in all, and complete notes on all the music - including some recollections from Duke himself.

The man is a complete musician : good songwriter, arranger, producer and...performer. Wether he hoes on the Grand piano or through his massive samples library, Duke has fully integrated sixty years of Jazz music into one album. Some of the songs are pure jazz rock, instrumental beauties(specially "No greater love" with Dennis Chambers on drums), some others are funk grooves with vocals, but lean towards nicely harmonised melody lines (check "411" and "money"). If you like Quincy Jones's "Back on the block", then you'll love this CD.

George Duke - Dukey Treats (2008)

Artist: George Duke
Title Of Album: Dukey Treats
Year Of Release: August 26, 2008
Label: Heads Up International
Genre: Jazz, Funk
Quality: MP3
Bitrate: VBR kbps
Total Time: 01:04:29
Total Size: 89 MB

Veteran keyboardist and producer George Duke remembers a time when funk was a powerful force not just in popular music but in social discourse. Frequently with a measure of wit and irony, and often with a strong dose of positivity at the core, titans like James Brown, Sly and the Family Stone and other funk icons of the `60s and `70s boldly addressed societal concerns ranging from poverty to racial disharmony to the battle of the sexes. Among the numerous treats on this album are not just the songs themselves but the roster of high-profile personnel helping to bring them to life many of them alumni of Duke's earlier bands and projects. Included on the guest list are bassist Christian McBride, percussionist Sheila E and trumpeter Michael Patches Stuart, to name a few. Along with Duke himself, the vocal crew includes Jonathan Butler, Howard Hewett, Teena Marie, Rachelle Ferrell and more.

Tracklist:

01. Everyday Hero 05:04
02. I Tried To Tell You 04:45
03. A Fonk Tail 04:06
04. Dukey Treats 06:53

09. Right On Time 05:28
10. Sudan 05:11
11. Are You Ready 04:32
12. Images Of Us 07:25

- Clique Aki:

The veteran keyboard/piano Master and producer (Anita Baker, Regina Belle, Rachelle Ferrell, Dianne Reeves, Marilyn Scott, Flora Purim...) returns with a very solid offering.
This is an album that is closest to his late 70's Epic albums (Reach for It, Dukey Stick etc..).
He surrounds himself with friends old and new on this set, including Sheila E. on percussion and backing vocals, a full horn section (including Michael "Patches" Stewart on trumpet and saxophonist Everette Harp), Jef Lee Johnson and Ray Fuller on guitars, and vocalists DeeDee Foster, Josie James, and Lynn Davis, as well as guest appearances by Leon "Ndugu" Chancler, Vinnie Colaiuta on drums, Wah Wah Watson, Lenny Castro on percussion, Christan McBride, Wayman Tisdale amd Michael Manson on bass and vocalists Rachelle Ferrell, Lynne Fiddmont, Teena Marie, Terry Dexter, Howard Hewett, Jonathan Butler.
A crowd-pleaser with a warm personality, he also has a serious side, and the dozen new songs here show the breadth of his artistry and awareness.
Tracks like "Everyday Hero" and the slowish masterpiece "Dukey Treats" have that P Funk tinged sound.
"Mercy" is a classic Jazz Funk style groove with a wicked instrumental break and keyboard solo following the vocal duet.
The complex instrumental "Images Of Us" is slightly more leftfield but is another Jazz Funk groover.
The gentler "I Tired To Tell You" and "Listen Baby" contrast with the frenetic Funk, as does the EWF sounding "Are You Ready".
Also on the mid-tempo side check "Somebody Laid It On Us" or the message based "Sudan", an indictment of the horrors of Darfur.
This is probably the best George Duke album for some time.
My favourite tracks: "Images Of Us", "Everyday Hero" and "Listen Baby".
"Dukey Treats" debuts at # 1 of The Billboard Top Contemporary Jazz chart and # 192 of The Billboard 200 Chart.

Anyone familiar with LOTW and their sound will want to snap up this classic album - it is undoubtedly one the best soul/funk albums Britain has ever produced and certainly worth more than the modest asking price.

However, it is unfortunate that EMI's reissue team have once again let themselves down with a flat, rough-sounding transfer that doesn't do justice to Augie Johnson's crisp upfront production. Interesting as it is to hear LOTW/Beggar & Co/Funk Jazz Collective's poorly recorded recent live recordings included here as bonus tracks, it surely would have been better to include the blistering original 12" mixes.

All credit to EMI for making this available but like Johnnie Taylor's 'What About My Love" CD issue and the recent 2-CD Capitol Disco compilation it presents another wasted opportunity by EMI to cash-in on their vast back catalogue and wealth of sonic expertise.
