"Noted composer, arranger, and accordionist, Sivuca developed a very successful international solo career after having performed with Baden Powell, Toots Thielemans, Chiquinho do Acordeon, Radamés Gnattali, Rosinha de Valença, Waldir Azevedo, Harry Belafonte, and Miriam Makeba, among many others. As a composer, Sivuca wrote the classics 'Adeus, Maria Fulô' (with Humberto Teixeira), 'João e Maria' (with Chico Buarque), and had hits with 'Feira de Mangaio' (with his wife Glorinha Gadelha) recorded by Clara Nunes and 'No Tempo dos Quintais' (with Paulo Tapajós). His partners were artists such as Paulinho Tapajós, Paulo César Pinheiro, Luís Bandeira, Armandinho, Hermeto Pascoal, and Chiquinho do Acordeon. Having taken the accordion very early, at nine Sivuca was already playing for a living in fairs and parties. Six years later, he moved to Recife (Pernambuco), where he debuted at the Rádio Guararapes. Hired by the Rádio Clube de Pernambuco, Sivuca performed in that outing for three years, both in solo acts and as a member of its regional, switching to Rádio Jornal do Comércio in 1948. There he learned music theory with the other musicians of the orchestra and then with its newly appointed conductor, Guerra-Peixe. Carmélia Alves, touring Recife in 1949, discovered him and brought him to São Paulo, where he backed her up in a recording that same year. In São Paulo, Sivuca was hired by the Rádio Record and in 1951, he recorded his first album with the choros 'Tico-Tico no Fubá' (Zequinha de Abreu) and 'Carioquinha no Flamengo' (Waldir Azevedo/Bonfiglio de Oliveira). With the international success enjoyed by the baião in the '50s and the consequent need of good Northeastern music and instrument players, Sivuca's career gathered momentum as he was the right man in the right moment and place. Still in 1951, he accompanied Carmélia Alves on the medley 'No Mundo do Baião' and recorded his second solo album with the frevo 'Frevo dos Vassourinhas Número 1' (Matias da Rocha) and the baião 'Sivuca no Baião' (Luíz Gonzaga/Humberto Teixeira). In the next year, he started to record originals with the choros 'Entardecendo' and 'Choro Baixo' (with Luís Bandeira), recording in the next year his baião 'Feijoada.' At the same time, Sivuca realized solo performances in São Paulo backed by his regional and also by the orchestras led by Hervê Cordovil and Gabriel Migliori, while he continued to perform on the Rádio Jornal do Comércio do Recife. In 1955, he was hired by the powerful nationwide network Diários Associados to work at the Rádio and TV Tupi (Rio de Janeiro), where he stayed until four years later. In 1958, as a member of Os Brasileiros, he toured Europe in one of the Brazilian Music Caravans sponsored by the Brazilian government. The group, led by conductor Guio de Morais, performed a three-month season with the Trio Iraquitã, Abel Ferreira, Pernambuco, and Dimas. In 1959, fired by Tupi for having participated in a strike for better salaries, Sivuca moved to Europe where he performed for three months with the group Brasília Ritmos (which had Waldir Azevedo as a member). After that, he was hired by a Portuguese club and then settled in Paris, France, where he lived until 1964, recording in 1962 through Barclay the LP Rendez-Vous a Rio. Having returned to Recife in 1964, in the same year he went to the U.S. with Carmen Costa, where he was invited by Miriam Makeba's husband/manager to join her group as a guitarist. Holding that position for four years, Sivuca became the director of Makeba's group and toured Africa, Europe, Asia, and America. Returning to New York in 1969, Sivuca directed the music and performed in the musical Joy, which opened in 1970. Having performed in San Francisco and Chicago, in live shows and on TV, in 1971 Sivuca was invited by Belafonte to join his group. Staying with Belafonte until 1975 as his guitarist, keyboardist, and arranger, Sivuca at the same time recorded solo albums in the U.S., including the praised Live at the Village Gate, where he interpreted 'Adeus Maria Fulô.' Returning to Brazil in 1977, he performed a live recorded show with Rosinha de Valença at the Teatro João Caetano (Rio de Janeiro), released as the LP Sivuca e Rosinha de Valença. In 1978, he had another hit with 'João e Maria' in the recording realized by Chico Buarque and his sister Miúcha. Six years later, Sivuca recorded another memorable LP, this time shared with Chiquinho do Acordeon and with the participation of Radamés Gnattali, Sivuca e Chiquinho. In the next year, he recorded three albums in Sweden, with Chiko's Bar/Sivuca e Toots Thielemans deserving especial mention. During the '80s and '90s, his schedule slowed somewhat, although he recorded an important LP with Rildo Hora in 1987 (Sanfona e Realejo) and performed with Baden Powell in Paris in 1997."

- Clique Aqui: 'Afro Rock Volume 1' is one of the most important compilations of heavy original '70s Afro funk and soul to be released in recent years. Originally surfacing on Duncan Brooker’s indie Kona label in early 2001, the album single-handedly kick-started the thirst among jazz, funk and soul fans and ‘diggers’ to rediscover lost music from Africa made during the ‘60s and ‘70s from a time when many countries were gaining independence and celebrating a Pan-African identity within their music. The album was one of the first to reach a far different audience to the traditional ‘world music’ market and spawned many further projects and labels in its wake. A year later, the ‘Nigeria 70’ compilation surfaced on Strut and labels like Soundway and Analog Africa would continue to unearth amazing lost gems from the Motherland. The album is testament to the determined work of Brooker following several research trips, especially to East Africa – Kenya and Zaire. It brought to light East Africa’s finest funk band, Air Fiesta Matata, led by the recently deceased Steele Beautttah, ‘The Nigerian James Brown’ Geraldo Pino from Port Harcourt in Nigeria, and the storming Afro jam ‘Yuda’ by Dackin Dackino, a previously unreleased gem from Zaire discovered on a discarded reel. The album has remained influential since its release with tracks appearing on other Afro compilations and on TV and film – Jingo’s ‘Fever’ featured in Kevin McDonald’s 2006 hit film, ‘Last King Of Scotland’. Out of print since 2002, the album is being reissued on Strut in its original form with an extra bonus track, a dynamite unreleased psychedelic cut by Kenya’s Ishmael Jingo. Three further bonus cuts, previously only available on a Japanese version of the compilation, ‘Deep Funk Africa’, will be available digitally. The CD package features the original sleeve notes by Duncan Brooker along with new additional notes providing further background to the album and tracks.

"When at 13 she enrolled at Roberto Menescal's guitar academy, Wanda Sá (also known as Wanda de Sah), a successful bossa nova artist, was spotted by Ronaldo Bôscoli and invited to appear on the programs Dois no Balanço (TV Excelsior) and O Fino da Bossa (TV Record). Starting her professional career at 19 with Wanda Vagamente (1964), one of the earliest arranging assignments by Eumir Deodato, Sá launched 'Inútil Paisagem' (Tom Jobim/Aloysio de Oliveira) and the earliest compositions by Edú Lobo, Francis Hime, and Marcos Valle. The album, launched at the Fino da Bossa show (at the Paramount Theater in São Paulo), was a success (having been reissued in Japan in the decade of the 2000s) and had a hit with 'Vagamente' (Roberto Menescal/Ronaldo Bôscoli). By the end of the same year, she joined Sérgio Mendes' Brasil '65 (with Rosinha de Valença and Jorge Ben Jor), realizing successful shows in Brazil and the U.S., where Brasil '65 was recorded (with the participation of Bud Shank and the Sérgio Mendes Trio). She also recorded in the U.S. the solo Softly and performed both in Brazil and the U.S. with the Sérgio Mendes Trio. In 1966, she returned to Brazil where she did shows with Baden Powell, Vinícius de Moraes, Mièle, Luís Carlos Vinhas, and the Bossa 3. In 1969, Sá participated in Paul Desmond's Hot Summer. Married to Edú Lobo from 1969 to 1982, a period in which she left the scene, Sá returned in the late '80s, performing shows with Roberto Menescal and Mièle, recording Brasileiras in 1994 with Célia Vaz. In 2000, she recorded with Luís Carlos Vinhas, Tião Neto, and João Cortez the CD Wanda Sá & Bossa Três with bossa nova classics and new compositions. Four successful seasons at the Sabbata Tokyo turned the CD Wanda Vagamente into a hit, having reached second place on the top charts. In 2001, she participated with Roberto Menescal, Marcos Valle, and Danilo Caymmi in the Fare Festival (Pavia, Italy)."
Victor Assis Brasil was the best Brazilian jazzman of his generation, having being praised by international critics. He is said to have been more popular outside Brazil than in it and his style was strongly influenced by non-Brazilian musicians. This critically-acclaimed record captures Victor in 1979, during the last prolific period of his too short life, and features standards "It's All Right With Me", "Night And Day" and "'S Wonderful."
Brother of classical pianist João Carlos Assis Brasil, Victor was influenced by music from an early age, but only at 17 did he start playing the saxophone and seriously decide to pursue a music career. His interest in music grew while he hung out with other musicians at Beco das Garrafas, the home of bossa nova in the 50s and 60s. Victor studied with Paulo Moura, and became more and more interested in jazz, performing at an International Jazz Festival in Austria, representing Brazil. He also took part in a music competition in Berlin and won an award for best solo performer. In 1966, Victor recorded his first LP, "Desenhos", which today is regarded as a rare gem. Two years later, Victor released his second album and went to the U.S. to study harmony, arrangement and composition at Berklee, in Boston. In 1970, while vacationing in Brazil, he recorded "Victor Assis Brasil toca Antônio Carlos Jobim". Victor returned to Brazil in 1974; made several recordings, shows, and taught improvisation at the Brazilian Conservatory of Music. He died early, at 35, leaving a legacy that combines traditional jazz and Modern Brazilian music.
