Title Of Album : VA - Africa: From Dakar to Johannesburg
Year Of Release : June 13, 2006
Label : Playasound
Genre : World, Ethnic & Instrumental
Quality : MP3

Total Size : 150 MB

Collecting pieces from the various items in the old Sunset-France catalogs, Edition Pierre Verger: Africa -- From Dakar to Johannesburg takes a stab at going around the whole of sub-Saharan African music in one album. Needless to say, that's a bit much. As such, the focus is largely on West African (Mali, Senegal, etc) and Central African (primarily Congolese), with a bit of South African tossed in here and there. The mood moves back and forth from high to low, fast to slow, as the music moves from country to country. Represented though are griot music from the Malian empire and further west, contemporary music from Burkina Faso and Senegal, precursors to soukous from Congo, some isicathamiya from South Africa, and a small load of pieces from the Drummers of Burundi, a relatively successful ensemble featured on some RealWorld recordings. The music is generally well performed, with some especially nice and refreshing takes from the likes of Boni Gnahore, Mamany Kouyate (a singer from the National Ballets du Mali), and the Bana Kin percussion group from D.R. Congo. The only real issue with the album is the lack of coherence, or of a story. There are so many cultures and musical idioms represented here, it makes for a schizoid sampler, rather than a singular compilation. Nonetheless, it makes for a decent stepping stone for those entirely new to African music, and holds a few nice surprises for the initiated.

This 28th volume of Ethiopique pays tribute to Ali Birra, the man in whom Oromo music has irrepressibly affirmed itself since the 1960s. A very unusual groove, very different from gouragué, amhara and tigrigna rhythms, a relentless quest for identity and, on top of that, a guitar style that would stand out anywhere. (Most of the pieces presented here were recorded between 1973 and 1975, yet this album also features 3 previously unreleased tracks from the 1960s)

Jimmy Smith - A Date With Jimmy Smith (2011)

After cutting five albums with his trio, organist Jimmy Smith on Feb. 11, 1957, recorded with trumpeter Donald Byrd, altoist Lou Donaldson and tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley in a sextet that also included guitarist Eddie McFadden and drummer Art Blakey. Among the five songs recorded that day, two (lengthy versions of "Falling in Love with Love" and "Funk's Oats") are included on this LP along with a shorter trio rendition of "How High the Moon" from two days later with McFadden and drummer Donald Bailey in a trio. All of this music has been reissued by Mosaic on a definitive CD box set.

Review by Richard S. Ginell

Centered around some soundtrack music that Herbie Hancock wrote for Bill Cosby's Fat Albert cartoon show, Fat Albert Rotunda was Hancock's first full-fledged venture into jazz-funk -- and his last until Head Hunters -- making it a prophetic release. At the same time, it was far different in sound from his later funk ventures, concentrating on a romping, late-'60s-vintage R&B-oriented sound. with frequent horn riffs and great rhythmic comping and complex solos from Hancock's Fender Rhodes electric piano. The syllables of the titles alone -- "Wiggle Waggle," "Fat Mama," "Oh! Oh! Here He Comes" -- have a rhythm and feeling that tell you exactly how this music saunters and swaggers along -- just like the jolly cartoon character. But there is more to this record than fatback funk. There is the haunting, harmonically sophisticated "Tell Me a Bedtime Story" (which ought to become a jazz standard), and the similarly relaxed "Jessica." The sextet on hand is a star-studded bunch, with Joe Henderson in funky and free moods on tenor sax, Johnny Coles on trumpet, Garnett Brown on trombone, Buster Williams on bass, and Albert "Tootie" Heath on drums. Only Williams would remain for Hancock's 1977 electric V.S.O.P.: The Quintet album to come. In addition, trumpeter Joe Newman, saxophonist Joe Farrell, guitarist Eric Gale, and drummer Bernard Purdie make guest appearances on two tracks.

1. Wiggle-Waggle - 5:51

Raul De Souza - Colors (1975)

Artist: Raul De Souza
Title Of Album: Colors
Year Of Release: 2011
Label: BGP Records / CDBGPM239
Genre: Fusion, Funk, Modal, Latin Jazz
Total Time: 40:41 min

This was Brazilian trombonist Raul De Souza's debut LP for Orrin Keepnews' Milestone jazz label. It was first released in 1975 and now something of a collectors' item, it's been revived by Ace's BGP imprint. It's a fine fusion set laced with piquant touches of Brazilian flavouring and the occasional soupþon of greasy funk. At the production helm is De Souza's fellow countryman, legendary percussionist Airto Moreira who enlisted famous US bebop trombonist, J. J. Johnson, to arrange a six-piece horn/reed section. With Jack DeJohnette on drums (he played with Moreira in Miles Davis's early '70s band), Richard Davis on bass, and a couple of strong cameos from alto sax giant, Cannonball Adderley, 'Colors' turns out to be a hugely enjoyable set. There's a superb rendering of the Joe Zawinul-penned 'Dr Honoris Causa' (originally written as a tribute to Herbie Hancock) with De Souza bringing new sonorities to the melody line, thanks to the rich, full-bodied tone of his trombone.

Cast from a different mould is 'Festival,' a highly propulsive Latin-inflected groove driven by a Brazilian samba beat and dominated by oodles of percussion. Another highlight is 'Canto De Ossanha,' a swaggering large ensemble piece featuring some great interplay between De Souza and Cannonball Adderley (sadly it was one of Cannon's last sideman appearances û he died nine months later). A lovely, plaintive version of Chick Corea's 'Crystal Silence' demonstrates (especially in its ruminative opening before the song really takes off) that the Brazilian trombonist could play with great sensitivity when required. After this impressive album û his first in the USA - the hirsute De Souza (who boasted a humongous Afro hairdo) signed to Capitol in the late-'70s and recorded three LPs (including the excellent 'Sweet Lucy'). But it was with 'Colors' that his reputation started to grow.

Review by Alex Henderson:
It's always regrettable when a talented jazz improviser puts jazz on the back burner, and that's exactly what Roy Ayers did when he made soul and funk his primary emphasis in the late '70s. As a jazz vibist, Ayers showed great potential in the '60s and early '70s, so it's understandable that jazz lovers were sorry to see him give up instrumental jazz. But when jazz purists claimed that Ayers' soul/funk output was worthless, they were dead wrong. The truth is that while Let's Do It doesn't have much to offer from a jazz standpoint, it's an excellent R&B outing. Ayers and Ubiquity are as appealing on the infectious funk hit "Freaky Deaky" as they are on "Kiss," "You Came Into My Life," and other examples of mellow, relaxed quiet storm music. While the LP's more mellow offerings have jazz overtones, it's important to realize that they're R&B tunes first and foremost -- saying that something is jazzy is not the same as calling it jazz. Let's Do It isn't the place to go looking for either acoustic jazz or electric jazz-fusion, but it's well worth obtaining if you're interested in '70s soul/funk.

Despite a lack of attention from most print sources and other common avenues of publicity in the blues world, Marvin Sease has turned his smooth, X-rated ladies' man persona into a cottage industry complete with merchandising in the Deep South. Sease straddles the line between blues and gospel-drenched soul, much like fellow Southern singers Johnnie Taylor and Tyrone Davis, but his often racy lyrics and concert performances, coupled with the advantages of major-label distribution, have ensured Sease a strong following, particularly among female fans enamored of his signature song and breakthrough jukebox hit, the provocative, innuendo-laced "Candy Licker." Born in Blackville, S.C., Sease got his start by joining a gospel group in nearby Charleston called the Five Gospel Singers, and moved to New York at age 20, where he joined another gospel group called the Gospel Crowns. Preferring R&B, though, Sease put together a backing band (called Sease) featuring his three brothers. When this venture failed, Sease began singing to pre-recorded backing tracks at local dances and clubs, self-released several 45s, and eventually scored a regular gig at a Brooklyn nightspot called the Casablanca. Gunning for greater success, Sease recorded a self-titled LP in 1986 featuring one of his most popular songs, "Ghetto Man," and began working the South's so-called chitlin circuit of ghetto bars, rural juke joints, and blues festivals. While shopping the LP, released on his own Early label, to record stores, Sease stumbled upon a contact who eventually got him a deal with Polygram, which re-released the LP on London/Mercury in 1987 with the addition of the newly recorded, ten-minute track "Candy Licker." "Candy Licker" became an underground success on jukeboxes across the South; it was too explicit for radio airplay, but audiences — especially female ones — flocked to see Sease in concert. Over the next ten years, Sease recorded a string of albums for London/Mercury (Breakfast, 1987; The Real Deal, 1989; Show Me What You Got, 1991) and the New York-based Jive (The Housekeeper, 1993; Do You Need a Licker?, 1994; Please Take Me, 1996) that sold consistently well, although none have yet matched the performance of Marvin Sease, which hit number 14 on Billboard's R&B chart and number 114 on the pop chart. Several more releases were issued before the '90s came to a close: Bitch Git It All (1997), Hoochie Momma (1999). Women Would Rather Be Licked was issued in early 2001. The live CD and DVD Live with the Candy Licker both appeared in 2005.
