The Diplomats of Solid Sound are back with their 5th full-length, and if the last album was their senior effort, with "What Goes Around Comes Around" the band has officially graduated! Once again mixed and edited by Freestyle's boy wonder Adam Gibbons aka Lack Of Afro and featuring The Diplomettes on vocals, the cuts included here are a strong showcase of the growing maturity and sophistication of the group. From the sing-along chorus of opening track "B-O-O-G-A-L-O-O", to the smooth soul number that gives the album its title, the uptempo "Back Off", or the instrumental groover "Bailout", "What Goes Around Comes Around" draws on a variety of styles but always keeping things soulful and funky!

The vintage sound of The Diplomats has been fine-tuned by almost a decade of releases, and ever since their first album in 2001 the band has been making a name for itself by firmly establishing it's credentials as one of the tightest contemporary soul outfits out there. The group can already count on the support of names such as Pete Isaac (Jelly Jazz), Mark Lamarr (BBC 2), Craig Charles (BBC 6), Rob Luis (Tru Thoughts), and Michael Ruetten (Compost Records), just to name a few, but with "What Goes Around Comes Around" The Diplomats Of Solid Sound raise the stakes up a notch. Though the formula remains unchanged, there's an added depth to the music, making this album a heavyweight must-have no matter how you listen to it!

Produced by Freestyle Records hottest property LACK OF AFRO aka Adam Gibbons, Pravda Records (in association w/Record Kicks UK) proudly presents the new album from Iowa City s ambassadors of funk and soul, The Diplomats Of Solid Sound featuring for the first time, The Diplomettes. Having already cut 3 full-length albums, "Instrumental Action Soul" (Prescription Records - 2001), "Let´s Cool One"(Estrus Records - 2003) and "Destination Get Down!" (Estrus Records - 2005), you can hear the band growing stronger in sophistication and depth as they further ingested the sounds of 60s soul, R&B and deep funk. Cut to 2006 and The Diplomats became backing band to RnB/Soul legend Andre Williams & recorded "Aphrodisiac" with ´Mr. Rhythm´ released in 2006 on both Pravda and Spanish label Vampisoul. That same year they asked 3 gifted soul sirens (Sarah Cram, Katherine Ruestow & Abigail Sawyer) aka the Diplomettes to join the group and the rest as they say is soul history. This self-titled album is chocked full of irresistible funk and soul bombs ready to melt your heart or make you shake it on the dance-floor. As an added bonus, Lack Of Afro put in a bit of overtime in the studio to sprinkle his magic on "Hurt Me So", giving it a skanking reggae feel whilst retaining the silky smooth vocals.

Other members of the Schema side though are Nicola Conte, The Dining Rooms, S-Tone Inc., Rosalia De Souza, Gianluca Patrella, Five Corners Quintet and Soulstance. Numerous compilations of '70s soul, funk, and fusion have been compiled in the name of blaxploitation throughout the years, whether or not all the inclusions were actually used in blaxploitation films (granted, just about everything from this ... Full Descriptionera was fit for soundtrack use). Union Square's The Best of Blaxploitation retraces a lot of familiar steps, but it's not as if most of the similar preceding compilations have remained easy to find. It's three discs in length, so it's bound to plug some significant gaps for beginners and moderate fans, and it contains some concise and informative track-by-track notes. It plays it straight, for the most part, with no revelations made for the hardcore collector. Highlights include James Brown's "The Boss," Marvin Gaye's "'T' Plays It Cool," Syl Johnson's "Different Strokes," Cymande's "Bra," and, naturally, Curtis Mayfield's "Superfly."

The opening tune is the wonderful remix by Danish producer Solo Moderna of the song "The Fixer" by "Cinematic band of the moment" Acusmatic Group. Followed by a series of wild break beat productions, among which Aldo Vannucci`s remix of "Davil Inside" by Max Sedley stand out, together with the soundtrack of Sony PSP`s TV ad "Body Down" by The Shiffers. We could not ignore, of cource, Benji Jumping and Robert Passera (with a taster of his new album), but also Modulo 5 and Low Fidelity Jet Set Orchestra (both from minds of the duo Dave Masoch/Paolo Apollo Negri, the latter with track under his own name too).
Last but not least: one of the last productions from the late DJ Rodrigues, with special guest on vocals Maki from Pizzicato Five!

Chico Hamilton - Twelve Tones of Love

Artist: Chico Hamilton
Title Of Album: Twelve Tones of Love
Year Of Release: April 14, 2009

Total Time: 01:15:40
Total Size: 102 mb

Whereas drum legends like Art Blakey, Gene Krupa, and Buddy Rich are known for their stunning solos, veteran Chico Hamilton is just the opposite--he is known for his subtlety, propelling an ensemble in a modest yet noteworthy manner. TWELVE TONES OF LOVE is something of a departure for Hamilton (and most jazz discs in general) as it consists of 18 short, super-concise tracks. Hamilton and company make every note count as they effortlessly dart in and out of an assortment of styles. Among the TONES explored are hard bop, cool, Latin, fusion, and free. With a crew of younger cats and old friends, the musicianship is, as usual, excellent.

Ari is a fantastic player with a talent for both, grand piano and Hammond. This is important as both instruments require different techniques and not many players can do well in both cases. Ari can and he makes his keys sing so sweet. Plus, the way he mixes jazz with soul and a bin of funk is so precise, yet so full of passion and gut that can only come from an artist who has spent a lot of time and love to get to know the music. Having said all that, “AB4” is so good that it could easily be one of the highlights in the catalog of the legendary Blue Note Records. Absolutely hot disc!

Friends Seen and Unseen finds the guitarist going back to his roots in a trio setting. His last trio release was the landmark Bing, Bing, Bing released in 1995 which put the guitarist on map. Hunter’s new trio features the dynamic skills of saxophonist John Ellis and drummer Derek Phillips both from Right Now Move. The trio setting is naturally more intimate and allows the musicians to interact with a tight yet free style with music that should appeal to both long time and newer fans.
The new material is a well-rounded mix of styles that prove Hunter is more than just a jam-band guitarist. Hunter’s music has always been and continues to be about the groove. The opening piece “One For The Kelpers” features a funky vibe with Hunter’s bass strings laying down the slow cooked groove while “Freedom Tickler” introduces a freer melody allowing the trio to stretch things out musically with open solos. Never one to take himself too seriously Hunter adds both depth and humor on “Lulu’s Crawl” which could be the theme song for a sleazy Vegas strip tease show, with honking saxophone, guitar effects, and vivid drumming.

Volume two of this collection of the
rarest grooves from Peru, including
garage stompers, psych-pop, raunchy
funk, Latin rock and anything in
between.

The journey continues. Treasures keep
turning up and surprises don't stop. The
shards of the tremendous musical
explosion that took place in Peru
between 1965 and 1975 are still
scattered, and those who are lucky to
find them remain hypnotised by their
charm forever.

During that magical decade Peruvian rock
bands fed from all possible influences.
The original surf, rock and beat sounds
were joined by psychedelic
experimentation and the cult of the
acid. Some bands went even further and
explored the field of music fusion as
well as the most remote confines of
their mind. And most of it is here! We
welcome you, then, to a new overview of
a scene whose diversity mirrors a
society based on a powerful mix of races
and cultures.

One of the great sources of inspiration
was the rock, psychedelic pop and soul
music that came from the United States
and England. The songs by artists like
The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Iron
Butterfly, The Beatles or Mitch Ryder &
The Detroit Wheels had such a great
impact that they ended up merging with
traditional Tropical rhythms, giving
birth to new and surprising music styles
such as "psychedelic guajira".

Some bands, like Los Holy's, Los
Comandos, Los Jaguars or Los Siderals,
chose to turn up the reverb on their
amps and do without lyrics for their
fantastic surf instrumentals, which
sometimes incorporated arrangements in
the style of Joe Meek.

Other groups went for a rougher
approach. Los Saicos, Los Shain's or Los
Drag's represent the wildest type of
teenage abandon with their beat rhythms
and garage energy. Hallucinogenic plants
and the consumption of other illegal
substances brought about total
experimentation to Peruvian music, both
in terms of composition and
arrangements. Songs such as the bluesy
'Efectos' by Los Teddy's and 'Cuarto
oscuro' by Los Zheros reflect this new
psychedelic scene.

After the lysergic effects came hard and
acid rock, full of heavy riffs and
plenty of fuzz and wah-wah pedals,
surprisingly adopted and practiced by
bands like Pax, Telegraph Ave and
Traffic Sound.

Traditional folklore also suffered the
effects of the foreign rock invasion.
Native styles such as cumbia
incorporated elements from rock, which
resulted in curious tracks such as
'Onstá la yerbita' by Los Destellos,
featured here.
