Oghene Kologbo & Afrobeat Academy- Remember Fela Anikulapo Kuti
Here's a must have for every fan of Afrobeat music - 'REMEMBER FELA ANIKULAPO KUTI' - The eagerly-awaited album of the legendary bass- and tenor-guitar-player Oghene Kologbo.
He's one of the true legends of Afrobeat music. Kologbo olayed on 37 albums with Fela Kuti and the Africa 70. He's carrying on the tradition with 10 songs recorded with the Afrobeat Academy
Guitar legend Oghene Kologbo was born in Warri, Nigeria in 1957. His father was a well known highlife musician. When Kologbo was a teenager, he began performing with the revolutionary Afrobeat master Fela Kuti. Kologbo went on to record more than 50 sides with Africa 70. He played the hypnotic tenor guitar lines, but often recorded bass and rhythm guitar too. Kologbo was Fela’s personal assistant and ‘tape recorder’. That is, it was his job to remember the melodies Fela would sing to him late at night, then teach them to the band at rehearsal the next day. In 1978, after a show at the Berlin Jazz Festival, Kologbo left the band (along with Tony Allen and a few others) and stayed in Berlin.
In the 1980s and 1990s, Kologbo worked with the legendary but short-lived Roots Anabo. He also toured and recorded with King Sunny Ade, Tony Allen, and Brenda Fosse, among others.
In 2005, Kologbo began working with the Afrobeat Academy, Berlin’s heaviest afrobeat ensemble.

Mebusas - Blood Brothers (1973/2009)
Best known for their cut Son of Mr Bulldog which was made available on the recent Afro Baby compilation on Soundway Records, The Mebusas lone LP Blood Brothers combines elements of American soul and funk, psychedelic rock, latin/carribean rhythms and traditional African music. Innovative arrangements, deep rhythms and top-notch playing make this 1973 album a true classic. This is the first ever reissue of this landmark album.
Beautiful grooves from the Nigerian scene of the 70s -- a set of really unique grooves, and the only-ever album from the enigmatic Mebusas! There's kind of a tripped-out feel to some of these tracks -- Afro Funk, but taken left of center from the style of Fela -- thanks to some weird keyboard bits, odd production touches, and some occasional psychedelic guitar -- which really fuzzes things up, and almost creates a cross-cultural vibe that should have gotten this album play up in London, or over in New York! Lyrics are in English, and some of the tracks have a heavy dose of American funk, too -- yet others are pure 70s African funk all the way through -- a wonderful blend of modes that really keeps things interesting. Titles include "Son Of Mr Bull Dog", "Do You Know", "Grooving Out On Life", "Kwashioko", "Blood Brothers", "Return/Pada", and "I Wonna Do It"

Mulatu Astatke- Mulatu Steps Ahead 2010
Following his acclaimed Inspiration Information collaboration with The Heliocentrics, the Father of Ethio jazz Mulatu Astatke presents his brand new studio album, Mulatu Steps Ahead, this Spring.
The album explores new directions in fusions of Western jazz with Ethiopian modes, moving forward the pioneering sound Mulatu developed during the '60s and '70s, showcased on the recent Strut compilation New York - Addis - London. For the new album, tracks were recorded with members of Either/Orchestra in Boston, with contributions by traditional Ethiopian musicians in Addis, members of The Heliocentrics and some of the U.K.'s leading jazz and African players during the final sessions in London in November 2009.
Each track on the album tells its own story. The reflective, meandering opener, "Radcliffe," was composed specifically for the Radcliffe Institute during Mulatu's time lecturing at Harvard in Boston – the original score is now framed on the wall there. "The Way To Nice" was written and arranged on the tour bus during Mulatu's recent French dates. "With this track, you are traveling on a long journey, talking and thinking," he explains. "It was inspired by the many beautiful places on the coast road around Nice."
"Assosa" adapts traditional music from the Assosa tribes in North-Western Ethiopia and "Mulatu's Mood" re-works a Mulatu jazz fusion composition from the early '90s into a new swinging Afro high life arrangement. "I wanted to use West African styles within this version and try new ways of using the beautiful sound of the kora," explains Mulatu.
"Boogaloo" and "I Faram Gami I Faram" reprise Mulatu classics with new, fuller scores while the bonus digital track "Derashe" highlights the traditional diminishing scales of the Derashe people of Southern Ethiopia, a musical technique that would later feature in the classical compositions of Debussy and the jazz of Charlie Parker. Says Mulatu, "Many debate how this music developed but the Derashe have played these scales for centuries. It is an untold story."

Isaac Hayes - Tough Guys [OST] (1974)
One of Isaac Hayes' richest soundtracks — deeper and more complicated than the groove of Shaft and Truck Turner, and filled with some great tunes that glow with color, life, and imagination — showing an Isaac Hayes that almost seems to be moving beyond the usual blackploitation groove! The album sports 2 really classic tunes — the title theme "Tough Guys", and the classic "Hung Up On My Baby" — both of which have a solidly funky feel that will more than please the usual soundtrack beathead crowd. But overall, the other tunes twist and turn in a delightful mix of modes — expanding on the soulful territory Ike first explored in his original soundtracks, and offering up a great range of moods and emotion. The album's got some especially great chromatic guitar work.

Isaac Hayes - Truck Turner [OST] (1974)
Massive work from Isaac Hayes — a hard and heavy soundtrack that we like even more than his classic work on Shaft! Unlike Shaft, Ike actually starred in the film Truck Turner — which may be one reason why he brought his full game to the table for the record — and scored a batch of badass tunes that still stand with some of the best funky soundtrack work of the 70s! The rhythm's especially hard on the best cuts — really crackling with a lot of intensity, and a stark, hard funky sound that's made the record a favorite of beatheads for years!

"Marvellous Marva", "Miss Excitement" Marva Whitney has been given a number of monikers over the years, but it was the late, great and sadly missed James Brown himself who summed it up best; dubbing her his "Soul Sister # 1".
Widely regarded as the funkiest of all James Brown's singers, Marva has been singing since childhood and first made her mark as part of the James Brown Revue in the late-1960's. However it wasn`t long before the Kansas born soulstress was cutting records of her own, many of which have since become rare-groove collectors items.
Marva`s aim to make "real soul music, that touches you and makes you dance" has seen a string of releases over the years, which have provided some of the hardest working samples in hip hop. The 45 King's classic "The 900 Number" features the looped sax intro from Marva's "Unwind Yourself", (although popularized by Chad Jackson's "Hear The Drummer Get Wicked"), along with many a career credited to her version of "It`s My Thing".
Since the rejuvenated interest in all thing funky (thanks to Mark Ronson et all!) the time is right for Marva to step back into the limelight and reclaim her crown as Soul Sister #1. Produced by Soulpower's DJ Pari and Ryo Nakata and recorded in Tokyo and Kansas City, this album features all new material, recorded in the style of 1969`s classic. It`s My Thing album. Fans will appreciate the raw and live, punchy feel of the tracks alongside some smoother moments which allow Marva to really do her thing belt out that classic soul!

Pela Sombras - Arthur Verocai featuring Carlos Dafe and Justo Almario- TIMELESS
Arthur Verocai performing "Pela Sombras" at the TIMELESS series. Presented by VTech and Mochilla.
The Timeless Series is about celebrating music. Great music, big music. Arthur Verocai's Self Titled album from 1972 is that. When Nuts told me that carlos dafe had sung on the original album and that we might be able to get him - I was totally sold. When Carlos Nino expressed that we might be able to get Justo Almario I was equally excited.
What happened that night as captured in the attached video is musical history. One of the leaders of the Black Rio movement - Dafe gets to trade his beautiful vocal stylings with Almario an Afro-Columbian who had come to the US and ended up playing with Mongo Santamaria, Roy Ayres (yes the Roy Ayres orchestra that toured Nigeria with Fela) and Mulatu. Yes Mulatu.
Across bars, across continents, across a stage on Cal State campus histories were rejoined and hearts beat faster to joyous music. Pela Sombras a song against the US backed dictatorship in Brasil from 1964 to 1985.... thank you Arthur.

The Austrian musician and multi-talent Just Banks demonstrates his remarkable versatility in debut album “Under the Influence”: Hip-Hop, funk, jazz, breaks and a pinch of minimal house come together here in flowing and coherent whole. The musical frankness of the tunes is continued when various guest artists are invited to contribute vocals, solos or phrases.
This is an album that also reflects the development and background of a musician who started his career in the mid nineties and who has never been prepared to nail himself down to any one single genre since then. “Under the Influence” refers to all that wide range of contemporary musical genres Just Banks has opened himself to, explored, fallen in love with.
He spices a relaxed stew of downbeat, midtempo breaks and solid electronica on “Under the Influence” with vocals from the Blaktroniks, BluRum13 (as known from Dj Vadim & Ninjatune), Coppa, Kristina Lindberg (Laine), Veda36 and others.
In 2006 Just Banks engaged the talents of the Bay Area-based collective Blaktroniks, who came up with the catchy vocals for his first release on Etage Noir entitled “360 Degrees”.
“Under The Influence” is now his first full-length album and it also includes the title track of his most successful EP to date “Bust A Move”.

Album Notes
Aja West, producer of hybrid funk jazz and soul presents his long awaited masterwork, "Total Recall 2012". After leading super group The Mackrosoft through ten fantastically successful albums, Aja West takes a solo turn bringing along his most talented and prestigious friends.
Reggie Watts (Maktub/Soulive) co-writes and lends his incredible vocal styling to a slew of new funk pop jams. His sweet and strong voice has been compared to everyone from Chris Cornell to Marvin Gaye. The adventurous lyrics of "The Getaway" and "Out of Control" showcase Watt’s funky Sly Stone/D’Angelo type of vocal seduction at it’s absolute finest.
Composer Aja West keeps the production crisp and clean playing multiple instruments and easing in and out of the jams on vocoder and slinky effected vocals. Female sirens tempt the listener over the sparse groove of "How Many Lumps?" and "Penny in a Fountain" showcasing classic funky rhythm and blue.

"Tru Thoughts is easily one of the UK's best independent labels, regardless of whether its audience is energetically twitching on the dancefloor or bobbing about in a chilled boudoir" – BBC.co.uk
The first label compilation since Tru Thoughts celebrated its 10th Anniversary last year, 'Shapes 10:01' showcases an eclectic stable of musical talent with its collective eye on a new decade. And the future's looking, and sounding, bright.
'Shapes 10:01', a double CD collection spanning 24 tracks, features acclaimed current material from acts including Quantic and his Combo Bárbaro, The Bamboos, Kylie Auldist, Hint, Azaxx, Belleruche, Lizzy Parks and Stonephace; plus a generous pick of upfront exclusives; and reworks from the daddy of UK dance music, Ashley Beedle (X-Press 2), rapidly rising dubstep star Flux Pavilion and many more exciting musical talents.
The first track, Lizzy Parks' "Forever And A Day" (Eric Lau remix), is a twisted modern soul version that takes Parks' timeless sound into club turf and sets the tone for the happy integration of classic and cutting edge that characterises this compilation, and indeed the Tru Thoughts roster. The song makes its first, eagerly awaited CD appearance here, as does CD 2 opener "All That" (Natural Self Remix) - both having originally appeared on a 12" which sold out in days.
Previously unreleased goodies include Azaxx's downright mischievous dancefloor track "Play Again", Natural Self's Club Mix of "Days Get Brighter" from his recent album, 'My Heart Beats Like A Drum' and the Andy H remix of Kinny's "Petrified Dazed" feat. TM Juke. The combination of modern soul voice Kinny and Alice Russell co-writer TM Juke was already a bona fide winner, so when Andy H (aka the man whose day job has seen him sign the Haggis Horns and Kidkanevil to First Word records) got involved, the result was one hell of a track, which appears here as an exclusive.
Elsewhere, Hint's slant on bleeding edge UK funky, and the bassline-heavy dusty reggae vibes from Fredo, whose track "Squadron Face" is a straight-up exclusive, segue into the vocal bluesy jazz of Nostalgia 77 featuring legendary singer Julie Tippetts (nee Driscoll) and Motown-laced funk of The Bamboos and Kylie Auldist (note a first CD release for the crisp, streetwise re-edit by Ashley Beedle). And, paradoxically, one of the many inclusions here that define Tru Thoughts' commitment to future-looking sounds is an oldie, in the shape of Quantic's "Tell It Like You Mean It", a genre-leading piece that still sounds as progressive today as when it came out – wait for it – back in 2006.
Tru Thoughts A&R Robert Luis has once again compiled the perfect selections for home listening and DJing - and his commitment to fellow vinyl junkies continues, as 'Shapes 10:01' is also out on delectable Double LP + full 2CD.

There comes a time in every band when their sound crystallises; The Bamboos' fourth LP is one of the most exciting, original, vibrant and downright addictive albums of the coming year, and could easily see them catapulted beyond the confines of a genre to permeate the international mainstream musical consciousness... The Bamboos have arrived!
The Bamboos have been championed by Mark Lamarr (BBC Radio 2), Craig Charles, (BBC 6Music), Kenny Dope and Keb Darge, and are widely acknowledged as one of the best and tightest live bands on the planet. They are up there with Sharon Jones' Dap Kings in the danceability, authenticity and cool stakes and – oh ok, if you insist we go there – bandleader Lance Ferguson (aka production wunderkind Lanu) more than rivals your Mark Ronsons in the categories of 'busiest man in funk' and 'crossover cover version genius'... not to mention that all important tie-breaker, 'pop star looks'.
Their version of Kings Of Leon's King Of The Rodeo last year scored the XFM 'X-Posure Hot One' accolade, BBC 6Music daytime play, and nearly 150,000 YouTube hits. Their sound is soul and funk music for today, not mired in over-the-top adherence to simply copying what has been done many times before.
Vocalist Kylie Auldist's work on this album could truly be described as virtuoso, with tracks such as first single On The Sly, huge live number The Ghost, and the hard-hitting track Keep Me In Mind, that sees Kylie delivering possibly her best ever recorded vocal performance.
Other vocalists also add a major degree of excitement: adored US rapper Lyrics Born on Turn It Up; and mysterious Tongan, King Merc, on the incredibly catchy, fresh and unique You Ain't No Good. The brooding guitar figure, '60s soul drums and reverbed-out claps come across like the mutant love child of Phil Spector and Gnarls Barkley - setting up King Merc's soul-drenched vocal like a rough mounting for a fine stone.

Brothers Unlimited - Who's For The Young (1970)
A excellent album of southern funk — and darn rare, too! We know almost nothing about the Brothers, but they're a 14 piece combo with a tight ensemble funk sound that clearly shows roots of both the Memphis and Muscle Shoals scenes where the album was recorded! There's a lot of fuzzy guitar, almost in a Detroit Westbound mode — but the band's also got a sweetly southern funk style, with lots of organ bubbling underneath the tracks, punctuated by some pretty tight drum work that really makes the best cuts groove nicely in a more righteous take on the Stax/Volt sound of the time. A really wild one — and the kind of record that makes your jaw drop when you realize that some lucky A&R guy was actually able to get an underground soul album released by a major label!

Monk Higgins - Heavyweight (1972)
Quite possibly the best album ever from funky maestro Monk Higgins! The record's got some of his tighest work of the time — with plenty of tight breaks, nice keyboards, and soulful sax riffs — and Monk is going full-out on the arrangements, in the manner that he used for his best late Blue Note work with The Three Sounds or Blue Mitchell. The group's listed as "The Specialties" on the cover, and they vamp along nicely, like some of Monk's funky groups from the late 60s funky 45 days

Monk Higgins - Little Mama (1972)
An excellent batch of soulful and funky instrumental tracks — super-dope 70s work from funky arranger Monk Higgins! The album grooves in the best blacksploitation soundtrack mode — as Monk plays tenor sax and organ in the set, over slinky stepping arrangements that feature Paul Humphrey on drums, and Freddy Robinson on guitars — all coming together with Monk in a sweet LA style of early 70s funk! The groove is funky, yet laidback at the same time — and with some soulful backing vocals behind the instrumentation on a number of cuts — really the perfect sort of approach for a hip crime or action soundtrack.

Deff Jazz - 2005
Sunday, January 17, 2010
Candido - Beautiful
A beautiful bit of Latin funk — and one of the rarest albums ever from the mighty Candido! The album's one of the first that has Candido stepping out of the straighter Latin jazz mode of earlier years — working with a funky lineup of players arranged by the mad genius Joe Cain, and going for a mixed electric/acoustic sound that reminds us of Mongo Santamaria's best work — only a heck of a lot funkier! In addition to killer conga licks from Candi, the album features some really heavy guitar and organ lines, plus some good choppy sax work — wailing away with a really solid soulful sound. Imagine Booker T & The MGs working in Spanish Harlem — and you've got part of the picture of this one!
Candido - Drum Fever
One of Candido's funkiest albums! The record's got a similar sound to Candido's great albums for Blue Note and Solid State — with short, hard funky tunes that have a really great 70s edge! Chico O'Farrill did the arrangements, and the record chops along nicely with some very funky tracks that feel like they were lifted from a blacksploitation soundtrack — conga mixed with great keyboards, wah wah guitar, and tight blasts of horns in just the right bits! The whole thing's a killer — filled with heavy funky 45-type numbers. Very nice!
Ginger Baker's Air Force
Out of the wreckage of Cream came some very hip grooves! Ginger Baker was the hippest of the group's 3 members. He should also get a hats off for his work with the group Air Force — essentially a 10-piece (which seems to have been expanded beyond even that number for this set) that came up with some of the most monstrous jamming we've heard! At its base, the group's in the jazz rock mode — with players that include Brit jazz luminaries Phil Seamen, Harold McNair, and Graham Bond, plus rockers like Baker, Steve Winwood, Denny Laine, and Rick Grech. The tracks are all long groovers in a post-beat group mode — and the best tracks have a jamming sound that's pretty over the top! It's full of the propulsive, Afro-influenced bass and percussion, some wild, jazz funk flute and sax, plus amazing work on violin, guitar and occasional, ephemeral vocals. Awesome stuff — one of the best and most innovative live albums of the era!

"Anatomy of Groove" is the previously unreleased Leo Gandelman NYC studio band project from renowned musicians including Reuben Wilson and Grant Green Jr. Far Out Recordings have rescued this swinging instrumental jazz funk record, which blends vintage New York brass and smoky jazz with the deep bass, heavy drums and 70s jazz funk organs of Brazil to create big textures and drip realism into these funky, cinematic nuggets.
Leo Gandelman and Far Out Recordings can finally release these ten beautiful and refreshingly old school compositions a decade after they were lovingly pieced together in to this killer groove.
Reviews:
“If ever there was a Latin funk super group, then it was the Brazillian Groove Band. The band included heavyweights like Reuben Wilson and Grant Green Jnr. The only question is why it took so long for this gem to be released? There’s no fat, just lean and mean groove. Friday night records don’t get any funkier than this.” Clash Magazine
"A sweet mix of Brazilian grooves and New York attitude - an overlooked session from the end of the 90s - recorded in the US by Brazilian sax man Leo Gandelman, with soulful help from a variety of American players - including Reuben Wilson on organ and both Charlie Hunter and Grant Green Jr on guitar. There's a rich 70s vibe to the record - a tight, funky blend of jazzy riffing and Brazilian percussion, all put together at a level that recalls Kudu Records at its best - lean, soulful, and surprisingly focused throughout - a great step forward for Gandelman,
and for percussionist Juliano Zanoni, who co-arranged the set with Leo, and also wrote most of the tunes. The record never saw the light of day when it was recorded, making this Far Out package its first-ever release." Dusty Groove

Press Release:
TM Juke and The Jack Baker Trio present 'Boto And The Second Liners'. A feast of carnival-spirited songs, this is an original album of pure party music that pays homage to the different rhythms of the Americas, moving from the '80s New York street party feel of junkyard, go-go music and old school inspired hip hop; through the funk and soul of Memphis and the Mardi Gras of New Orleans; and south to Latin America and Brazilian samba. The record boasts some great guest performers - most notably singers Alice Russell, Kathrin deBoer of Belleruche and Andreya Triana, and genre-bending Spanish singer Gecko Turner (Lovemonk).
The 'Boto And The Second Liners' project was born when TM Juke and Jack Baker were on tour with the Alice Russell band, passing their time in airports and vans by cataloguing songs that could be reworked in a South American stylee. The original plan was for an album of covers, but once the pair got to work, the covers were dropped in favour of original rhythmic masterpieces. Written and recorded in less than two months, the album was all played live - not a sample in sight - and nearly all the percussion and drums are single takes. The pair avoided ironing out too many creases and tried not to over-produce, and as a result the recordings have a rough and ready feel and that unique, palpable live energy.
TM Juke has built a reputation as a prolific and acutely talented musician, producer and DJ. His previous solo projects have encompassed soul, funk, hip hop and jazz; with sublime hooks and a spirit of experimentation. With two acclaimed solo albums for Tru Thoughts under his belt, he also produced and co-wrote some of Alice Russell's most highly acclaimed releases and he is one half of dancefloor-destroying duo Me&You. The Jack Baker Trio is, in fact, just Jack Baker, percussionist extraordinaire. His other high profile musical endeavours include playing in the Bonobo Live Band, which is how he became acquainted with the magical powers of Andreya Triana and Kathrin deBoer (Andreya is currently co-producing her first solo album with Bonobo, and Kathrin is the band's live frontwoman of choice).

It’s time to switch on the lava lamp and crack open the Babycham, because Big Boss Man are back and groovier than ever.
The ever-present Hammond Organ ensures that ‘Full English Beat Breakfast’ is a seriously greasy affair and the perfect start to any weekend. The boys keep the pace fast and tight, with a bit of psychedelic rock, samba and Northern Soul thrown in for good measure. It certainly puts the ‘swing’ back into the swinging 60s, with plenty of Georgie Fame-esque grooves.
If Charlie Croker from the ‘Italian Job’ was still alive – gawd bless his soul – he would be dancing to this, and recommendations don’t come any better than that!

Don Julian - Savage! (1973)
One of the greatest blacksploitation soundtracks of the 70s — and one of the rarest too! The album's a crowning achievement for the mighty Don Julian — an artist who's best known for his earlier LA soul with The Larks, but who steps out here with a hip, hard-grooving sound that's really amazing — kind of a small combo take on the bigger orchestrations you might hear in other films of the time — served up with lots of heavy drums and sharp-edged guitar in the mix! The rhythm section is especially great — bad-walking along with a blend of bass, drums, and congas — and other instrumentation includes flute, sax, and trombone — plus guitars from both Arthur Wright and Julian.

The Gaturs - Wasted (1970)
An essential bit of funkiness from this obscure New Orleans funk combo! The Gaturs' frontman was keyboardist Willie Tee — who went on to greater fame as a jazz and session player — but we like him best at this early point, when he was wailing away on organ in a tight choppy small group setting. The Gaturs clearly deserve any praise you could heap on them — and their work on this album's a perfect match with the New Orleans funk of Eddie Bo and The Meters. Most of the material was recorded in New Orleans, but only ever issued on 7" singles — and this is the first LP that the group have ever had under their name.
