The group is very popular in Europe (especially France and Spain) and Latin America. Yotuel and Ruzzo, two Cubans who moved from Havana to Paris as part of an international studies program, joined Roldan and Flaco-Pro to form the band in 1999. Their work is influenced by the hip-hop movement as well as both Latin and Cuban rhythms. As of May 2008, they have produced a total of 3 studio albums and a greatest hits album.
The name “Orishas” refers to the set of deities worshipped in African-based religions that were brought to the Americas by slaves of the Yoruba people in West Africa. These religions, parts of the Yoruba mythology, include Santeria in Cuba and Candomblé in Brazil. These orishas, or deities, each represent a natural element (such as the ocean or leaves) and exhibit a human characteristic (such as motherhood or love).[4] The choice of this name for the hip hop group is a way of creating a direct link between this band and the African diaspora. This link is evident in the lyrics to "Nací Orichas" and "I Sing For Elewa and Changó". Creating such obvious references to Africa was an interesting choice as the band ultimately based itself in Europe. This success is a statement to both the international appeal of the group itself as well as the global popularity of Cuban culture.[5]
Currently the band consists of only three members, Yotuel, Ruzzo and Roldan. Flaco-Pro left the group in 2002 before the release of their second studio album, Emigrante[6].
Today, the band members live distributed in Europe (Roldán in Paris, Ruzzo in Milan, and Yotuel in Madrid). In total, after producing three albums, the group known as Orishas has sold more than 750,000 copies of its albums in Europe and has received two Grammys. In 2007, they contributed with Puerto Rican group, Calle 13, on the song "Pa'l Norte" (featured on the album Residente o Visitante). The song won a Latin Grammy for Best Urban Song.

Rhythms Del Mundo is an electrifying album that fuses music of different cultures and comes up with a melting pot of rare sounds. While the majority of the original artists' vocals remain the same, The Buena Vista Social Club musicians took the original orchestration from each song and created something utterly unique, casting their trademark mastery over each track. Their noted and exceptional musicianship seduced even the notoriously protective Arctic Monkeys into handing over their track. As well as The Arctic Monkeys' track `Dancing Shoes', Rhythms Del Mundo included reworked tracks such as `Clocks' by Coldplay, `Better Together' by Jack Johnson, `She Will be Loved' by Maroon 5, `High and Dry by Radiohead' and others. The album is in aid of Artists Project Earth (APE), which lends support for natural disaster relief and climate change awareness.

When I first received this CD I said to my self, "oh no, not another remake album." Boy was I wrong. With an ensemble comprised of the children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews of members of the Buena Vista Social Club, what we have here is perhaps one of the most lively, exciting, impressive, energetic and just plain off the hook releases coming out of Cuba.
With a small intro by trombone masters Generoso Jiménez and Juan Pablo Torres, the projects kicks into gear with "Los herederos" composed by Elsa Torres (she's the sole composer for 11 of the 12 songs on the CD). This songs pits veterans Raúl Planas and Pío Leiva with new comers Lázaro Reyes and María Elena, who are reassuring the older generation that they are going to keep the tradition alive, knowing how to swing and improvise. The songs boasts the talents of master conguero Tata Güines, master timabalero Changuito and trumpeter extraordinaire Julio Padrón. This will be a classic!
Women vocalists dominate this project as is the case with "Pa los rumberos" sung by the sister of Barbarito Torres, Conchita Torres. With her guajira style vocals and with one of his most aggressive tres playing Pancho Amat, this song proves that good music will never die.
While on "Qué rico son" María Lazo and young Arienys Lazo (we need to keep an eye on this young singer) gives you goose bumps. They are on point with their soneos and phrasing, wishing the song was longer.
This CD should be heard from beginning to end, nonstop. Not one bad song, no filler material here. If orgasms lasted this long, the world would be a better place.

Personnel: Manuel Mirabal (trumpet); Pepe Maza (vocals, claves); Demetrio Muniz, Ibrahim Ferrer, Aldo Del Rio, Carlos Calunga, Diego Ramon Palacio, Tirso Oriol Duarte Lescay (vocals); Manuel Galban (guitar, organ); Papi Oviedo, Jose 'Maracaibo' Castaneda, Johnny Neptune (tres); Polo Tamayo (flute); Javier Zalba (alto saxophone, baritone saxophone); Rolando Sanchez, Pantaleon Sanchez (alto saxophone); Alfred Thompson, Antonio Jimenez, Rafael 'Jimmy' Jenks (tenor saxophone); Ventura Gutierrez (baritone saxophone); Yaure Muniz, Luis Alemany Conde, Alejandro Pichardo (trumpet); Jesus "Aguaje" Ramos (trombone); Ruben Gonzalez, Roberto Fonseca (piano); Cachaito Lopez (double bass); Manuel Anga Diaz (congas); Roberto Garcia, Carlos Gonzalez (bongos); Enrique Lazaga (maracas); Amadito Valdes (timbales); Diego Coppinger
A trumpet player who learned at his father’s knee, Mirabal began playing professionally in 1951. He joined the jazz band ‘Swing Casino’ on 1953 before forming the ‘Conjunto Rumbavana’ three years later. In 1960, he joined the ‘Orquesta Riverside,’ whose singer Toto Gomez gave him his nickname ‘Guajiro’ Mirabal. There followed spells with ‘Orquesta del Cabaret Tropicana,’ directed by Armando Ramer, the ‘Orquesta del ICRT,’ the official orchestra of Cuban state radio and television. He had also toured with Oscar de Leon and Jose Feliciano.
BVSC presents Manuel Guajiro Mirabal is a debut album for Mirabal who was not only an integral figure of the Buena Vista series of releases, but for decades his trumpet sound has accompanied many cuban maestros and cuban orchestras or ensembles. For this album, Mirabal is paying tribute to Arsenio Rodriguez, an important figure and inovator in the world of Cuban music. Known as "El Ciego Marvelloso" (The Blind Marvel), Rodriguez was one of the pioneers of the conjunto and by introducing congas, piano and extra trumpets he totally transformed the looks of Cuban music forever. So, the music on this album is based upon Rodriguez's music or is music inspired by this revered figure. The configuration of instruments that Mirabal chooses, three trumpets, tres, guitar, percussion, piano and the roller coaster of lead and backing vocals, presents the classic conjunto configuration. Supported by a great ensemble who previously worked (most of them) on Omara Portuondo's Flor De Amor, this record is providing another adventure in Cuban music. The music is rough, dynamic with brilliant performances by each memeber of this "specially assembled group." Although it is driven by many tempos and styles it never losses its grip and focus. It kicks off with "El rincon caliente" which sets the scenery to come-impassioned vocals, plenty of rhythms and brilliant brass work. "Para bailar el montuno" is a showcase for Manuel Galban's guitar brushes as well as Papi Oveido's delicate tres playing. "Deuda" features guest vocalist Ibrahim Ferrer who provides emotional vocals and is supported by the trumpet trio comprised of Luis Alemañy, Alejandro Pichardo Pérez and Guajiro. Polyrhythms just burst throughout the whole record and it never losses the dynamics one has come to expect of these muzos.
The closing track is "Dombe Dombe" with Guajiro's seductive trumpet lines and delicate piano lines provided by Roberto Fonesca, who is featured prominently, contributing to the music's exotic mood. Nevertheless, this recording is a marvelous mixture of various afro-cuban styles and jazz, but the interplay between the musicians is really the treat of the album.

If you asked a hip-hop expert what the main differences between East Coast and West Coast rap were in the late '80s and '90s, you would have likely heard the following generalization: West Coast rappers were about beats and messages, while the East Coast was about rapping technique, flow, and rhyming style. There is some truth to that generalization, but like other generalizations, that East Coast/West Coast scenario was a case of patterns and trends rather than hard rules that could never be bent or broken -- the problem with musical generalizations is that there are usually a lot of exceptions that have to be taken into account. Because they favored a jazzy alternative rap sound and made rhyming technique a high priority, Five Fingers of Funk were usually compared to New York and Philadelphia artists in the '90s. But Pete Miser's group was from Portland, OR, and there isn't the slightest hint of gangsta rap or G-funk on About Time -- this 1998 release brings to mind Gang Starr, A Tribe Called Quest, and the Jungle Brothers, not Snoop Dogg or Warren G. While there are some parallels between About Time and Miser's solo output, the two are not identical. Fingers have the strong Native Tongues influence that Miser's solo recordings are known for, but with a less produced sound and punchy horn arrangements that owe a lot to '70s funk. About Time, you see, is the work of a hip-hop band -- not just a group, but a real band with trumpet, sax, trombone, electric bass, percussion, and real drums (as opposed to simply drum machines). Miser's rapping and DJ Chill's turntable work are surrounded by live instruments, and that separates About Time from most of 1998's hip-hop efforts. Alt-rap enthusiasts are advised to give this CD a close listen. ~ Alex Henderson, All Music Guide

Good God! Heavy Funk Covers of James Brown From All Over The World 1968-1974
Good God, indeed -- a masterful compilation of some of the weirdest James Brown covers you've ever heard -- a truly global assortment of tunes, all of which really keep the best funky spirit of The Godfather in place! The tracks here go way past the usual, and most of the numbers are all quite obscure -- tracks recorded not even by soul singers, but by an assortment of artists of many different genres-- all working at different points around the globe in the 60s and 70s, brought together here by their love of James' original funky vision! And in case you're worried about these tunes being some watered-down version of the JB groove, put your fears to rest -- because all the cuts here have as many funky breaks and hard riffing as any of James' best from back in the day -- Dusty Groove America
