These two CDs contain 17 tracks by Latin bands throughout the U.S. who fused rock, jazz, and Latin music in the late 1960s and 1970s. The title is a trifle misleading; although Mexican-American bands from Los Angeles and San Francisco are well represented on the set, it also includes Puerto Rican-American artists and groups from New York and Miami. There are also a couple cuts from the Peruvian band Black Sugar, included to illustrate the influence of U.S. Latin rock in Latin America itself. At any rate, it's a great collection of a genre that, other than the hit records by Santana of course, is largely overlooked by mainstream rock history and poorly represented on reissues. It should be noted that the tracks by larger ensembles with several horn players and percussionists can sound rather more like salsa music with a rock influence, rather than the other way around (not that that's a bad thing). Cuts like Black Sugar's "Viajecito," for instance, could fit well on a salsa radio station but for the obvious touches of contemporary rock, usually in the guitar. In "Viajecito," for example, there's a wild "Shaft"-like psychedelic guitar that runs through the entirety of what otherwise is a fairly standard Latin pop-jazz song; Tierra's "Sun God" kicks off with crazy synthesizers reminiscent of those heard on Pink Floyd's "On the Run." The influence of Santana is felt mightily throughout, particularly in the more rock-oriented bands, like Miami's the Antiques, whose "Chauca" is like early Santana with a dash of the Yardbirds, and a real highlight of the collection. The Santana comparisons are not always coincidental: Carlos Santana's brother Jorge Santana played guitar in Malo, and onetime Santana member Coke Escovedo founded Azteca. At its best, this collection, like early Santana, is an intoxicating mix of rock, R&B, psychedelia, jazz, and Latin music; even at its least impressive, it's still pretty enjoyable. Santana themselves are represented by the song that's probably the apex of the whole musical movement, "Soul Sacrifice." The only major complaint one could offer is that 75 minutes of music is spread throughout two discs, and could have been combined onto one CD. As compensation, there's a 40-page booklet with information on the groups and the sociopolitical factors that gave birth to the style.

Though pianist and singer Tania Maria's Intimidade was originally released in the fall of 2005, it didn't become domestically available in the U.S. until the next year when Blue Note issued it, which is a good thing for American fans of Brazilian jazz, or jazz, or just good music in general. Because Intimidade is a great album, rich and full while not sounding ornate. It's an intimate affair (hence the title, perhaps), Maria with her bassist (bassists actually, as there are three that play on the album, including the great Eddie Gomez, with whom she has a conversation -- both musical and verbal -- on "E' Tao Gostoso Seu Moco") and percussionists working together to create sophisticated, sensual, warm music that comes out of the speakers and into the room like something tangible, something with substance and actual measurable qualities like viscosity and weight. Maria's voice (the word "sultry" is often used to describe it, and is an appropriate choice) is clearly the star of the record, her scat-and-piano solos acting as a bridge between the vocals and the instrumentation (which is just as strong) behind it; she's comfortable moving between elements of funk and pop within her normal jazz and samba routine. Her version of "Besame Mucho" is fantastic, seductive, and nicely syncopated, with a piano solo that echoes lines of Billie Holiday's "Gloomy Sunday." In fact, Maria is more than willing to reference her American influences, from Sarah Vaughan to Ray Charles to Burt Bacharach as she goes through original pieces as well as some great Latin classics ("Agua de Beber," "Evocacao"), which work quite well, showing off her versatility without sacrificing any of the passion or great rhythms. Intimidade is the work of a mature, talented artist who's been around long enough to know how to make everything she does sound near perfect. -- Marisa Brown ~ AllMusic.com

Stevie Wonder - Music Of My Mind (1972)

One of Rolling Stone magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. "Music of My Mind" is widely hailed as Stevie Wonder's artistic rebirth, the beginning of his "classic period." The 1972 release is a breathtaking exploration of soul, sound and the sonic possibilities of the recording studio, shaped as much by his roots in R&B as it is by his interest in electronic instrumentation. Compared to his earlier work, this music feels worlds away, the texture of the album was different from anything he had released. Performing almost entirely solo, Stevie ties overdubs of keyboards, drums, harmonica as well as his mastery of traditional song structure and his immense musical personality into well-woven audio tapestries. Standout tracks include "Superwoman (Where Were You When I Needed You)," "Happier Than The Morning Sun," "Keep On Running" and "I Love Every Little Thing About You." He makes a small job of transposing the passion of soul music into a synthesized world. At this point, people realized that Wonder was no longer suggesting brilliance. He had found it.

Azymuth - Faça De Conta

Azymuth - Avenida Das Mangueiras.wmv

José Roberto Bertrami (teclado), Alex Malheiros (baixo) e Ivan Conti Mamão (bateria) começaram a carreira tocando no Canecão, no Rio, no início dos anos 70.

Sivuca - Samba Nouvelle Vague (1962)

Genre: Jazz/Bossa Nova
Quality: Mp3

Total Time: 54:15
Total Size: 249 MB 236 MB (Scans)

"Noted composer, arranger, and accordionist, Sivuca developed a very successful international solo career after having performed with Baden Powell, Toots Thielemans, Chiquinho do Acordeon, Radamés Gnattali, Rosinha de Valença, Waldir Azevedo, Harry Belafonte, and Miriam Makeba, among many others. As a composer, Sivuca wrote the classics 'Adeus, Maria Fulô' (with Humberto Teixeira), 'João e Maria' (with Chico Buarque), and had hits with 'Feira de Mangaio' (with his wife Glorinha Gadelha) recorded by Clara Nunes and 'No Tempo dos Quintais' (with Paulo Tapajós). His partners were artists such as Paulinho Tapajós, Paulo César Pinheiro, Luís Bandeira, Armandinho, Hermeto Pascoal, and Chiquinho do Acordeon.
Having taken the accordion very early, at nine Sivuca was already playing for a living in fairs and parties. Six years later, he moved to Recife (Pernambuco), where he debuted at the Rádio Guararapes. Hired by the Rádio Clube de Pernambuco, Sivuca performed in that outing for three years, both in solo acts and as a member of its regional, switching to Rádio Jornal do Comércio in 1948. There he learned music theory with the other musicians of the orchestra and then with its newly appointed conductor, Guerra-Peixe. Carmélia Alves, touring Recife in 1949, discovered him and brought him to São Paulo, where he backed her up in a recording that same year. In São Paulo, Sivuca was hired by the Rádio Record and in 1951, he recorded his first album with the choros 'Tico-Tico no Fubá' (Zequinha de Abreu) and 'Carioquinha no Flamengo' (Waldir Azevedo/Bonfiglio de Oliveira). With the international success enjoyed by the baião in the '50s and the consequent need of good Northeastern music and instrument players, Sivuca's career gathered momentum as he was the right man in the right moment and place. Still in 1951, he accompanied Carmélia Alves on the medley 'No Mundo do Baião' and recorded his second solo album with the frevo 'Frevo dos Vassourinhas Número 1' (Matias da Rocha) and the baião 'Sivuca no Baião' (Luíz Gonzaga/Humberto Teixeira). In the next year, he started to record originals with the choros 'Entardecendo' and 'Choro Baixo' (with Luís Bandeira), recording in the next year his baião 'Feijoada.' At the same time, Sivuca realized solo performances in São Paulo backed by his regional and also by the orchestras led by Hervê Cordovil and Gabriel Migliori, while he continued to perform on the Rádio Jornal do Comércio do Recife. In 1955, he was hired by the powerful nationwide network Diários Associados to work at the Rádio and TV Tupi (Rio de Janeiro), where he stayed until four years later. In 1958, as a member of Os Brasileiros, he toured Europe in one of the Brazilian Music Caravans sponsored by the Brazilian government. The group, led by conductor Guio de Morais, performed a three-month season with the Trio Iraquitã, Abel Ferreira, Pernambuco, and Dimas. In 1959, fired by Tupi for having participated in a strike for better salaries, Sivuca moved to Europe where he performed for three months with the group Brasília Ritmos (which had Waldir Azevedo as a member). After that, he was hired by a Portuguese club and then settled in Paris, France, where he lived until 1964, recording in 1962 through Barclay the LP Rendez-Vous a Rio. Having returned to Recife in 1964, in the same year he went to the U.S. with Carmen Costa, where he was invited by Miriam Makeba's husband/manager to join her group as a guitarist. Holding that position for four years, Sivuca became the director of Makeba's group and toured Africa, Europe, Asia, and America. Returning to New York in 1969, Sivuca directed the music and performed in the musical Joy, which opened in 1970. Having performed in San Francisco and Chicago, in live shows and on TV, in 1971 Sivuca was invited by Belafonte to join his group. Staying with Belafonte until 1975 as his guitarist, keyboardist, and arranger, Sivuca at the same time recorded solo albums in the U.S., including the praised Live at the Village Gate, where he interpreted 'Adeus Maria Fulô.' Returning to Brazil in 1977, he performed a live recorded show with Rosinha de Valença at the Teatro João Caetano (Rio de Janeiro), released as the LP Sivuca e Rosinha de Valença. In 1978, he had another hit with 'João e Maria' in the recording realized by Chico Buarque and his sister Miúcha. Six years later, Sivuca recorded another memorable LP, this time shared with Chiquinho do Acordeon and with the participation of Radamés Gnattali, Sivuca e Chiquinho. In the next year, he recorded three albums in Sweden, with Chiko's Bar/Sivuca e Toots Thielemans deserving especial mention. During the '80s and '90s, his schedule slowed somewhat, although he recorded an important LP with Rildo Hora in 1987 (Sanfona e Realejo) and performed with Baden Powell in Paris in 1997."
