The uniquely close working relationship between Chris Wilson's Heartbeat label and Clement "Coxsone" Dodd's venerable Studio One label continues to produce some of the best reggae reissues around, and this one is no exception. This album consists of extended 12" mixes of old singles by such eminent Studio One artists as Lloyd Robinson, the Gaylads, the Silvertones and the great Ken Boothe; interestingly, the original tracks (mostly recorded between the late '60s and early '70s) seem to have new drum parts overdubbed onto them by the legendary drummer Leroy "Horsemouth" Wallace. The result is an interesting juxtaposition of old-school rock steady sounds and sharper, more modern drum parts laced with the occasional hint of synthesized percussion. It's a combination that works better than you might expect -- Lloyd Robinson's "Cuss Cuss" benefits greatly from Horsemouth's solid attack, and Ken Boothe's more ska-inflected "Come Running Back" is also nicely fortified by better bass definition and a crisp hi-hat sound. Most of these tracks are presented with dub versions appended; in other cases, the instrumental track is simply extended once the vocal part is finished. Those mixes are less effective than the real dub versions, but aren't a real liability. Recommended. ~ Rick Anderson

Rare grooves from the pulpiest regions of Spanish cinema from late 60s to late 70s – soft core erotica, comedies and otherwise exploitation style films! In the late sixties and early to mid seventies, while Spain was still under Franco's last years of dictatorship, Spanish cinema entered two important periods known as "Landismo" (named after actor Alfredo Landa) and "Destape" (The Strip Period). Lots of bizarre, soft-erotic/comedy and exploitation films were shooted, most of them featuring groovy and delirious soundtracks. Serious and well-respected musicians like Antón García Abril, Adolfo Waitzman and Gregorio Gª Segura incorporated the latest musical trends which came from other European countries like Italy and France to their work. This was a frenetic period, in which these composers adopted the hip and modern sounds of the time to their compositions for soundtracks, mixing them with their Spanish roots, resulting in an avalanche of incredible soundtracks for exploitation films.
Virtually every Spanish comedy/exploitation/action film released during 1968 and 1974 included the typical scene of "young people dancing to groovy music at the club full of weird hippies", especially if the directors were people like Pedro Lazaga and Mariano Ozores and the cast featured actors like Alfredo Landa or José Luis López V zquez.. Sadly, the majority of these soundtracks are lost forever, as they were never released on vinyl and the audio master tapes usually were erased or ended up in the trashcan. On "Psicotrónica!" you'll find tracks taken from real soundtracks along others which sound 100% cinematic but were never included in any film. All of them taken from unknown records released in Spain between 1968 and 1978, including many rare library private recordings. A real fest of Spanish styled blaxploitation & library grooves, psychedelic funk full of flute, fuzz and wah-wah guitars, Hammond grooves, sexploitation sounds, bossa-scat nuggets, thriller-spy-action grooves...

Easily the greatest collection of Colombian grooves we've ever seen – a beautifully-done package from Soundway Records, and one that lives up to the high standard we first found in their compilations of African and Panamanian funk! This time around, the focus is on the legendary Discos Fuentes – a label as important to Latin music in Columbia as Fania was in New York – but also one that's got a much richer history, and much deeper range of grooves!

At the end of the sixties and early seventies, the serious and traditional flamenco world and the rumba scene from Catalonia collided with the modern pop sounds which came from abroad. Enterprising producers adopted those new musical trends: rock, pop, psychedelia, soul, funk and more. Long-haired session musicians armed with electric guitars and drums started to get involved with flamenco and rumba singers, creating an explosive sound: fuzz and wah guitars, Moog and Farfisa synths and organs, drum breaks and soulish horns blend with exotic flamenco and rumba percussions and raw vocals.

The far reaching sounds of Thailand from the mid 60s to mid 70s – from spaced out, pulpy jazz & funk, to eclectic luk thang with Latin and psychedelic rock influences, to melodic north east Thai molam – an impeccably well chosen and beautiful sounding rarities put together by the great Soundway label! All of the material appeared on vinyl LPs and 45s from the era, and the recorded quality is excellent throughout. Amazing, eye-opening Thai music on Soundway – a label that's nearly unrivaled in it's way of carefully and respectfully putting together global music of historical and cultural importance, but doing so with a hip sense of fun and adventure, dispensing with dry academia all together. Perfection!

After the huge success of their first 2 albums "Sitar and Bossa", and “D'Jazzonga” Bebo is back with perhaps his finest yet!
With the spirit of whatever "Nu Jazz" might be, with a way-cool cinematic bossa nova-jazz groove that could pass for a genuine late-'60s or early-'70s soundtrack recording, garnished with early 21st century electronic touches.
Bebo blends elements of dance music, jazz, trip-hop, swing and downtempo into one delicious, happy cocktail and suggests the exuberant insouciance of parties, rides in convertibles on warm, full-moon nights, and an afternoon spent dancing barefoot with friends with a glass of sangria in your hand.
The Album opens with the sublime title track, Nu-Jazz at its best! The albums flows into “Havana Jazz” and “Mambo & Cola” – lots of Brazilain Jazz here!
Next is the swingin' dance tracks of Louis Prima’s “Sing Sing Sing” and “James Bonds theme” both done “Bebo style”. Funky beats of “Jazz or NuJazz” get you into the groove with sensual parisienne singer Luma’s vocals on “that’s the way I like it” and London’s top Jazz singer Iain Mackenzie breaks your heart with “now and ever”.
Bebo gets back into cool seductive, jazz again with “chill radio bossa” and “the sun is shinin’” with “Jazz carnival” and “daikiri bossa dance” playing the album out.
Lastly Chin Chin has added a bonus remix track of “Sing Sing Sing” done by DJ Gabriel’s with a dance floor New jazzy-grooved beat put to it!

A mad mix of styles that perfectly sums up the sound of late 60s Brazil! Som Tres have their roots in the bossa generation, but they're stretching out here with a flurry of 60s styles from mod instrumental pop, groovy psyched-out production, and endless strands borrowed from European and soundtrack modes of the time. The result is a completely indescribable batch of tracks that's just about as groovy as groovy can be and which includes more than a few numbers that have been sought after for years by the Blue Brazil generation.

Japanese exclusive release.Though the material isn't of the first rank and her voice betrays her several times, Nara Leão makes this 1965 LP work better than most by virtue of her excellent interpretive skills. Also credit the sure hands of Luiz Eça and Dorival Caymmi, who helped out with the session.

An excellent bit of funk that sounds a heck of a lot like early Kool & The Gang! It's no surprise, too, because the album was produced by Gene Redd, has a few Kool & The Gang covers (like "Funky Granny" and "Who's Gonna Take the Weight"), and was issued on the related Red Coach label. The group are head and shoulders above most other early 70s ensemble funk groups – and have a very tight instrumental approach that was only matched by a few other combos, like the early Fatback Band or K & The G. Tracks include "Gold Smoke", "Funky Granny", "Who's Gonna Take The Weight", "Mama Said-Papa Said", and "Funky Gene-Ra-Tion". © 1996-2011, Dusty Groove America, Inc.
