BLU buff at the MOCA / Context is everything

A lot of people are up in arms, because the MOCA‘s new director Jeffrey Deitch had a commissioned mural by Italian street artist BLU buffed. The mural was created for an upcoming “Art in the Streets” exhibition, but was taken down due to the sensitive anti-war message it portrayed. Politics aside, I think having a mural buffed before the show even opens is a perfect testament to the fragility of street art.
While it sucks it happened, it happens around the world every day. Amazing work is buffed before anyone beyond the artist has seen it. Under bridges, down alleyways and on roof tops. At least this BLU mural was documented, and will be a part of the MOCA event in printed materials and of course around the internet on blogs.
Will this buffing start a bigger dialog with politicians and art critiques about the value of street art? Probably not. But will this upcoming show? More than likely. And thankfully this buffed mural will be a part of that story. Context is everything.

VA - Blue Brazil Vol 3: Blue Note in a Latin Groove (2000)

Artist: VA
Title Of Album: Blue Brazil Vol 3: Blue Note in a Latin Groove
Year Of Release: 2000
Label: Blue Note
Genre: Bossa Nova, Latin Jazz
Quality: 320kbs
Total Time: 01:02:24
Total Size: 140mb

Continuing its reputation for releasing excellent jazz and world music, the Blue Note label has issued the third volume of Blue Brazil. Although many of the traditional Brazilian artists on this compilation might be unknown to North American audiences, the bossa nova sound will always be familiar. For Blue Brazil, Vol. 3, Mark Taylor dove deep into the archives to pull together a unique collection of rare and obscure music in the bossa nova tradition. None of the tracks have been previously released on compilations or LP reissues in Japan or Europe, making this album even more of a gem. The Brazilian sound is made complete with a touch of samba, compliments of a Monsueto track from the early '60s. For fans of Brazilian music or just beginners looking to learn, Blue Brazil, Vol. 3 comes highly recommended. ~ Diana Potts

The album is good! If you enjoy Blue Note or Brazilian music then its more than worth the small price. Blue Note fans will particularly enjoy this album as the fusion of styles is well suited and executed.
The album starts off in high spirits of the Samba then meanders through the Blue notes of Brazil, excellent for dinner parties or nights in.

However the only point of caution would be to those of you who would be into hard core Brazilian Music, then this might not be your favorite cup of tea, all be it one to which you may wish to experience. ~ John Duff

VA - Blue Brazil Vol 2: Blue Note in a Latin Groove
Release - 1997
Label: Blue Note Records
Audio CD: November 22, 1997

... I grew to appreciate this one more. At first listen, you're thrown off because it's so much different from the first one, released a few years earlier in the mid 90s (this one's from 1997). Featuring Brazilian tracks with a pretty "blue note" type of vibe, but really loaded with funk & some soul, this is a sampler of some pretty sweet clasics from the 60's and 70's (give or take a few). The funny thing is that today, I listened to a few albums I hadn't heard in a long time, so I felt like comparing Blue Brazil 2 with Beleza Tropical and Brazilian Beats.

Starting out with Antonio & Adolofo's "Transamazonica", you know you're in for a pretty sweet, jazzed up trip. While you've got some original glory featured here, do note that in early 07', it was featured on Far Out's "Brazilika", given a Daz-I-Que edit under the title "Luizao". Wilson Simonal had a nice rendition of a Moacir Santos classic here with "Nana". And how about Elza Soares' "Deixa A Negar Gingar". Once married to the "Joy of the People" (Garrincha), Elza had so much power and spirit in her voice, and was so popular the same could also be said of her. Milton Banana which his distinct sound, light bossa and gentle sway chipped in with a few great songs too. Also check out the Quarteto Em Cy version of "Tudo Que Voce Podia Ser" - nice. It's been done quite a few times, maybe more notably recent versions by fusion legends Azymuth. But I think the real cool track here is the pretty emotional "Libera Nos" by Edu Lobo. The intro's so cool - in about 1996 or so, a French jazz group featuring Salome De Bahia named "Reminiscence Quartet" released a song titled "Inspiration" which featured the beginning of this song. Fitting, really considering Edu Lobo's sometimes overlooked musical genius.

All in all, this was a very good compilation of songs. Not all of the songs I liked now or back when I first got this several years ago ("Also Sprach Zarathustra" being one, even though it was a very influential song. But listening to it now, I can appreciate more of the songs. There's some real quality here and some really cool, funky and groovy old sounds and auras from Brasil from 30-40 years ago. The politics, the poverty, the crime and desparation but still the breath-taking beauty and art in such an amazing place. Check it out! And it placed a bit above Brazilian Beats (vol 1) and Beleza Tropical to me. Different concepts, but altogether different quality too. The good thing with this compilation is that they proudly trumpet that Brazilian music is much more than "The Girl from Ipanema" and they do a great job showing it. ~ bordersj2

Fantastic! And every bit as wonderful as volume one. Put together by the guys at Mr. Bongo, this volume 2 features more rare Brazilian gems from the Brazilian EMI/Odeon catalog. The selection is stunning, and filled with material that will make your jaw drop! Way beyond the usual bossa stuff, this one includes amazing fusion, cool grooy sounding stuff, and haunting cuts that are beyond description. Great stuff, and a fantastic introduction to the kind of grooves that have been driving the international Brazilian scene. ~ Dusty Groove

I cannot believe it took me this long to "discover" this CD. It is remarkable with terrific tracks and a seemingly natural flowing feel about it. From the opening track, you are transported to Brazil and have the feel of the music and the inspiration of the new movement and the next generation of Brazilian musicians and stars.
The biggest standout track to me is Joyce's "Aldeia de Ogum". It displays her range and the shows how she could use her voice as an instrument just like the other top divas of Sarah Vaugh and Flora Purim. Other notable artists were Edu Lobo, Marcos Valle, Eumir Deodoto and Milton Banana Trio.

After giving it a listen, you wonder why Sergio Mendes version of Ponteio wasn't included. But it doesn't stop you from enjoying it. I recommend this CD. ~ bordersj2

To talk about Brazil is to evoke the musical paradise per excellence, the untiring joy, the delirious football, its dreamy beaches, its eternal sun. that successful cornucopia has allowed to nourish an intense musicality as well musical styles, including Joven Guarda in the 50?s, samba and MPB in the 60's and 70's. That impressive crossroads of cultures; European, African and Indian. Furthermore, Brazil has inspired the jazz and vice versa with fabulous results.

This album incorporates a very valuable set of singers, ensembles between 1965 and 1980, and it constitutes an admirable tour de force throughout the Brazilian music: Quarteto Novo, Joyce, Milton banana Trio, Eumir Deodato and the delirious singer Elza Soares

If you go for this album, you will make a wise choice. ~ Hiram Gomez Pardo

This inspiring, romp of an album never let's up! The corny cover of a Carmen Miranda with fruit bowl hat is not a good indication of the quality of the music which is seriously brilliant (and there are no Carmen Miranda songs). Joyce's dazzling, virtuosic, "Aldea de ogum" is a standout track but this collection of rare material from the 1960s to the 1990s is remarkable for its consistent high quality. "Blue Brazil" belongs with other essential Brazilian compilation CDs like "Canta Brazil -The Great Brazilian Songbook" and "Beleza Tropical 1". ~ Jeff Burgess

U.S. group formed at the start of the '80's by Tina Weymouth and Chris Frantz of Talking Heads. Other members of the group were Steve Scales, Alex Weir, Tyrone Downie and Tina's sisters Loric, Lani and Laura.

Although originally established as a side project, the Tom Tom Club enjoyed early success with hits such as "Genius of Love" and "Wordy Rappinghood", which were taken from their self-titled first album which was released on Sire in the US and Island Records elsewhere in 1981.

"Genius of Love" has been sampled or reinterpreted by many artists, including rapper Redman, Funkdoobiest and Mariah Carey in her hit single "Fantasy". "It's Nasty" (1982) by Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five was one of the early rap versions of the song - however, the sample was re-recorded by a live band, as was common practice at the time. Another version, "Genius Rap" (1981), by Dr. Jeckyll & Mr. Hyde was the first version.

VA - How Many Roads: Black America Sings Bob Dylan (2010)

Bob Dylan is not a black artist; not thought of as an R&B/soul/blues artist; and not even especially thought of as a songwriter often covered by African Americans. Yet his compositions have garnered their share of interpretations by black musicians, and 20 such covers from 1964-1990 were assembled for this unusual compilation. The Ace label excels at putting together imaginative, cross-licensed anthologies bridging different eras and styles, as well as combining material by stars and unknowns, and How Many Roads: Black America Sings Bob Dylan is no exception. None of these tracks were hits, but the majority of the performers were either very popular (Nina Simone, Solomon Burke, Gary "U.S." Bonds, Booker T. Jones, Esther Phillips, Brook Benton, the Isley Brothers, the Neville Brothers, the O'Jays, the Staple Singers, Patti LaBelle) or had a solid level of niche popularity (the Persuasions, Howard Tate, Freddie Scott, Bobby Womack). Most of the songs date from the '60s, but a couple post-'60s compositions do dot the program.

But while there's no faulting this CD on packaging grounds (including Ace's usual excellent liner notes), the music isn't quite as exciting as it is historically interesting. For the most part, these don't rate among either the best or more inventive Dylan covers. They're often simply competent tracks done in a more soul-oriented style than these items usually are. Highlights are naturally the cuts where performers strongly imprint their own personalities or come up with a particularly effective arrangement, like Nina Simone's impassioned "Just Like a Woman"; the Isley Brothers' SPAMisingly restrained and heartfelt "Lay Lady Lay"; the Persuasions' a cappella "The Man in Me"; and the Staple Singers' "Masters of War," which with a 1964 recording date goes back to their folk days. It might be a little harsh to suggest that some of the lesser efforts verge on forced novelty, but certainly Solomon Burke's strange 1965 version of "Maggie's Farm" does not play to that great soul singer's strengths. Other items are not so much worthy of praise or criticism as they are fairly perfunctory or unremarkable. It's also undeniable that this is missing some of the best and most famous African American Dylan covers, like Jimi Hendrix's "All Along the Watchtower," Richie Havens' "Just Like a Woman," Stevie Wonder's "Blowin' in the Wind," or (to dig a little deeper) anything from Odetta's fine Odetta Sings Dylan album. There might be room for such selections on subsequent volumes, however, and overall this does a commendable job of putting an eclectic mix of lesser-celebrated Dylan covers in one place.

Vintage Black is the second of three releases in successive months from Indigo Jam Unit. December 2008 saw the release of the superb Pirates, and this album sees them embarking on a slightly different project, working with label mates Flexlife - an acoustic soul duo consisting of Rie Aoqi on vocals and Ken Okura on guitar.
Given the success that Indigo Jam Unit have had, imagine that this album is intended to show a different side to their music and also raise the profile of Flexlife. For this collaboration, the musicians decide to cover some classic soul songs from the sixties and seventies, and given that they have dipped into the songbooks of Donny Hathaway, Stevie Wonder, The Jackson Five, Gil Scott-Heron and Curtis Mayfield, you could say that they have set themselves up for a fall. It's almost as if someone has raided their collection of Free Soul compilations and selected their favourite songs.
