Cymande (Sah-mahn-day) were an electric funk band who released several albums throughout the early 1970s. The group was formed in 1971 in London, England by musicians from Guyana and Jamaica. The name Cymande is derived from a Calypso word for Dove, which symbolizes peace and love.
The group developed a subtle and complex, deep funk style influenced by calypso rhythms, jazz, African music, American soul and UK rock of the time. Cymande can now be seen as one of the most sophisticated of the funk acts that evolved in the early 1970s. By the mid-70s the band members were going their separate ways and the group was disbanded in 1974. It wasn't until 20 years later that they reaped any financial rewards, as their music became a popular source for samplers. Cymande's original albums are still widely sought-after by DJ's and funk aficionados. Perhaps the band's best known recording is the soulful dancefloor filler called "Bra", which was later sampled by the American hip-hop group De La Soul and used as a breakbeat record by the godfathers of hip-hop Kool Herc and Grandmaster Flash.

That's really what this is. In 2004, Kyoto Jazz Massive celebrated 10 years of their music, and with loads of friends from around the world, they came up with a three cd series. They were titled "RE: KJM" (Red Cover), "For: KJM" (White Cover), and "By: KJM" (Black Cover). These three discs were straight imports, and initially retailed at about $30-$40 state-side. Re: KJM had artists re-interpreting many of their songs. For: KJM had songs dedicated to them and even had a song done by them. By: KJM featured KJM's remixes. This one, the gold covered "10Th Anniversary", is a double disc set released by Compost Records (their label in 2002) featuring many of the songs from there along with a mix from a random 12" of their tunes. Yup - the three discs came out in 2004, and this gold one came out in 2006. A bit of a delay.
The music here's good. Energetic and neat broken beats on the tracks. CD1 starts out with Quantic's rendition of "Brightness of These Days", followed up by a neat broken beat mix of "Where Love Shines" by Incognito - given the trademark Kyoto Jazz Massive percussion treatment. It's such an alive sort of sound... the cut kind of reminds me of a Jiva song. That's followed up with Phil Asher & Rasiyah in "Time to Fly", the opening track on "For: KJM". Great song, nice glide, gentle soul. Other highlights were Kenny Dope's take on "Shine" (man, I miss THAT Guida De Palma, where it wasn't forced!). Other hits were Domu's, Kaidi Tatham/Dego and Afronaught's tracks. Basically, a broken beat fest of cuts.
CD 2 starts out with Da Lata's take on "Ronca de Cuica" which was solid, but not that impressive to me. Jazztronik's crazy beat-heavy version of "Shine" pumped up the album quite a bit. Strange song, but interesting, all the same although the beats, after a while, feel distorted (and it wasn't my speakers... take great care of those!). "Aphrodite" by Louie Vega and EOL was one of my favorites though of the three disc series... really nice latin vibe to it with the drums, xylophone and guitar in harmony. Nice little cocktail jam. Monday Michiru put in a very nice take on one of KJM's biggest cuts, "A Calmaria", with a poem as she does. Would've been even tighter without some of the electronic in it - but still a wonderful song. Other highlights from disc 2 were Sleep Walker's version of "Eclipse" and I lked Aurora's "Nacel Do Sol"... Nacel Do Sol in particular takes me back to the good old "Bossa Tres... Jazz" days.

the UK's premier funk band started out as a quartet gigging in small clubs in the Southeast of England in 1999, playing classic funk tunes by artists such as The Meters and The JB's. As the gigs got bigger, so did the band and they were soon complemented with the now renowned Speedo Horns and the all-girl soul vocalists The Speedettes. In 2000, the first single "Soul Safari" was released on the seminal New York based label Soul Fire and was soon followed with a slew of fine releases on other labels such as Timmion and Kennel Klub. Each single was released on 7" only and limited to 500 copies. The emerging modern funk boom of the mid 90s, aided by magazines such as Big Daddy and DJs Keb Darge, Snowboy and Jazzman Gerald, lapped up the authentic sounds and tight arrangements. These early singles sold out immediately and not surprisingly now fetch a handsome price on various on-line auction sites. It is these early groundbreaking singles that this compilation is dedicated. None of the 12 tracks have been released on CD before, with 3 of the tracks being previously unreleased. From the firing opener of “Speedometer Parts 1 & 2” through to the heavy funk workout of “Hold The Bus” it is easy to see this bands influence on the style of artists such as The Quantic Soul Orchestra, Breakestra and any other band in the modern funk scene.Over the years, Speedometer have worked with many of the US funk legends includingJoe Quarterman, Eddie Bo, Marva Whitney, Sharon Jones, James Bell (Highlighters), Lee Fields, and Billy Wooten. All the artists were blown away by Speedometer's authenticity and dedication to faithfully creating the original soul-funk sound. We hope you are too!

Bo Diddley - Drive By Bo Diddley: Tales From The Funk Dimension 1970-1973
Bo Diddley we already love you — but this set gives us another reason why! Although Bo's probably best known for his classic R&B work of the late 50s and early 60s, but during the 70s he also managed to cut some massively funky albums for Chess — working in the blues revival/funk turnover sound that was pioneered in the Cadet Concept studios with some of the label's classic artists of earlier years. The grooves on this set are amazing — heavy funk all the way, and filled with a ripplingly strong guitar sound over heavy drums and bass — still handled with the same offbeat sense of humor that we love in Bo's older work, but retuned nicely for the hip heavy sound of the 70s!

Eddie Bo's Funky Funky New Orleans: Rare & Unreleased New Orleans Funk 1968 – 1971
Although Eddie Bo is long known as a funky peformer in his own right, during his years on the New Orleans soul scene, he also spent a good deal of time producing records for other artists. This long-overdue compilation brings together a funky funky batch of recordings that Eddie did with other artists in the early 70s, plus a few under his own name that did not appear on the other Funky Delicacies comp of his work. The sound is heavy heavy funk all the way through — with lots of nice basslines and hard drums — and although some of the cuts have appeared on other comps, there's more than enough new stuff here to keep your ears fresh!

General Elektriks is the brainchild of Hervé ‘RV’ Salters. A French national and a keen vintage keyboard player, Salters was playing keys for his bands and for various artists in Paris (Femi Kuti, M, DJ Mehdi etc…) before he moved to San Francisco in 1999.
He sarted working on funk collages as he was moving to the US, using his favorite keyboards, a computer and a mic. GE became a musical journal that followed RV through his move to Seattle, then back to the Bay Area, in Berkeley, where he currently resides. There, he hooked up with the Quannum crew (Blackalicious, Lyrics Born, DJ Shadow…) and started sessioning for them. He invited Quannum’s own Lateef The Truthspeaker and Chief Xcel on a few tracks, then completed the 1st GE album, ‘Cliquety Kliqk.’ Hailed by URB as ‘Ennio Morricone for the 21st century,’ the album is a far out mix of vintage funk, hip hop beats, noir riffs, cinematic arrangements, pop melodies and digital twinkle.
After touring behind the album, Salters joined Blackalicious in the studio to work on ‘The Craft’ and toured with them for over a year. Concurrently, he formed San Francisco trio Honeycut with singer Bart Davenport and drummer/programmer Tony Sevener. Quannum Projects released their critically acclaimed 1st album, ‘The Day I Turned To Glass,’ in 2006. As he was touring with Honeycut and laying keys down for more artists (Lifesavas, Curumin,, Jel, The Mighty Underdogs, etc…), Salters started working on a second GE effort. ‘Good city for dreamers’ was completed in the fall of 2008. On 'Good City,' RV whips up his own take on psychedelia, one where future soul, oldschool pop, sampling, indie rock, hip hop and free jazz make sparkles as they collide. In doing so, the French expatriate joins the growing ranks of artists who are citizens of the world, nomads who create a sonic landscape that feeds as much on their origins as it does on their travels.

Stevie Wonder - Superstition (1972)
"Superstition" is a popular song written, produced, arranged, and performed by Stevie Wonder for Motown Records in 1972, when Wonder was twenty-two years old. It was included on Wonder's Talking Book album,[1] and released as a single in many countries. It reached number one in the USA,[2] and number one on the soul singles chart. [3]. Overseas, it peaked number eleven in the UK, in February 1973. In November 2004, Rolling Stone ranked the song at #74 on their list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. The song is recognised as Stevie Wonder's signature song.

This is the fourth solo album by Quantic and Will Holland's eighth full-length production. A year and a half in the making, 'An Announcement To Answer' marks the next step in the evolution of Quantic's sound - broadening his musical palette whilst still delivering the trademark funky grooves that have made him a sure-fire floor-filler for DJs worldwide.
Inspired and educated (as opposed to influenced) by the records he discovered whilst travelling and working in Puerto Rico, Nigeria, Benin, Ghana and Ethiopia, Quantic has fused the traditional sounds of these countries with hip hop, soul, funk and jazz to produce his own potent musical brew.
Much of the album was written and recorded on a laptop in various locations around the world - including Puerto Rico and the Candela studios in San Juan - during an extended period of international gigging and crate-digging. Experimenting with new techniques and collaborating with the talented people he met during his travels has endowed Quantic's music with a greater depth, intricacy and level of sophistication than ever before.
Guest artists on the album include Noelle Scaggs from The Rebirth, Ohmega Watts and Puerto Rican percussionist Tempo, who has previously worked with Roberto Roena of the legendary Fania All Stars.

Will Holland's second album under the Quantic name, originally released in 2002. Innvision is Ed & Enne's own label and they've released most of their work through Innvision. They've been featured in countless playlists of the tastemaker's tastemakers like Makossa (G-Stone/FM4), Jon H (Fort Knox Five), Kid Loco (Yellow Productions), and Rob Birch (Stereo MC's), and they've contributed to Brazilectro and Ursula 1000's "Ursadelica" to name the least. The Pink Panther track was from their second single "Born To Funk" which sold out within a month (that's the track featured in Ursadelica as well). They've also done remixes for the likes of All Good Funk Alliance, Soulphonic Sound System and Parov Stelar.
When it comes to the music on The Groove Collage you'll get a little bit of everything, but what else would you expect. There are healthy Brazilian music influences here, as well as Afro-Latin grooves of all kinds. Added to that are some exquisite lounge moods, demonstrated best in songs like the opener "Funky Kitchen", which is well suited to lovers of Ursula 1000, Thunderball, or Kraak & Smaak. "Vamos Irmanos" was released as one of the singles off The Groove Collage (as was "It's Hip To Be Square") and it's a heavy Latin groove saturated with funky keys and horns over a smooth layer of breakbeats. This one is going to hit fans of Fort Knox Five or Skeewiff right.

Funky grooves, psychedelic sitar, and mod Hammond organ - a magnificent blend that's every bit as dynamic as the image on the cover - served up as the long-awaited album from this cool European combo! The album's got a feel that's somewhere between 60s spy soundtracks and Brit library work - but also carries a tighter, funkier groove overall - a contemporary ear for the best funky elements of the old days, served up with production styles that continue a very classic groove! The whole thing's a real unexpected delight - a set that grabs us with the same sort of energy as the older Blow Up scene during its best years - with no kitsch, no nonsense, and a brilliant sense of sound throughout.
"Super tunes, full of Hammond, wah-wah, sitar, Moog, drum breaks. What with the shifts in textures and mood it's far more preferable to what the other bands of this ilk have been turning out over the past few years! Classy and cool ! " Jon Mojo Mills - Shinding Magazine (UK)
"Ces cocktails furieusement pop pourraient bien devenir aussi cultes que les annes 60. C'est, en tout cas, tout le mal qu'on leur souhaite." Joachim Bertrand - Only Groove (France)
"The first releases by Stereoscope Jerk Explosion are nothing short of marvelous! Stereoscope Jerk Explosion have taken a classic sixties club sound and made a genuine classic to sit alongside the masters." Martin Lawrie - Soul Generation (UK)

Researches begun years ago, diggin dusty vinyl crates for obscure samples. The discovery of italian '60s and '70s soundtracks was a crucial point; from that moment on nothing sounded as good and interesting as electrifying tracks from exploitation movies.
By the summer of 2007 time was ready and Tommaso Colliva (Muse, Franz Ferdinand, Arto Lindsay) invited an incredible jam band formed by Massimo Martellotta (Stewart Copeland, Eugenio Finardi, Mauro Pagani) on guitars and lapsteels, Enrico Gabrielli (Afterhours, Mariposa, Morgan) keyboards and brass, Fabio Rondanini (Pino Marino, Roberto Angelini, Collettivo Angelo Mai) on drums and Luca Nano Cavina (Transgender, Lindo Ferretti, Beatrice Antolini) on bass to record at omniaB studios in Milan.
During that first two days long recording session Calibro 35 became a killer combo performing classic and obscure themes, trying to bring something contemporary to the compositions but still remaining very respectful to the originals. Original tunes appeared soon with the same aim, recreating the attitude, the sound and that strange mixture between jazz, funk, rock, classical and improvvisation that made italian soundtracks known worldwide.

Widely recognized as one of the most creative and influential musicians of the 20th century, Jimi Hendrix pioneered the explosive possibilities of the electric guitar. Hendrix's innovative style of combining fuzz, feedback and controlled distortion created a new musical form. Because he was unable to read or write music, it is nothing short of remarkable that Jimi Hendrix's meteoric rise in the music took place in just four short years. His musical language continues to influence a host of modern musicians, from George Clinton to Miles Davis, and Steve Vai to Jonny Lang.

Baby Huey - The Baby Huey Story: The Living Legend
Fantastic! The lost link in the Chicago soul scene of the 60s was Baby Huey — and he was a pretty darn big link too, if you've ever seen him in pictures! Weighing in at about 300 pounds, Baby Huey was sort of a rockin' soul star who played clubs on both sides of the city, to audiences of all types — working in a party-styled blend of funk, rock, and soul that was one of the most powerful grooves going down in the Windy City at the time! Huey sadly passed away at a very young age, leaving only this full album as his legacy.

Dennis Coffey - Hair & Thangs
A stunner! You'll probably never find this rare first Dennis Coffey album in the original, so you owe it to yourself to snatch up this funky funky reissue of stripped down guitar breakbeat jams! The record has Coffey playing his trademark fuzzy guitar, along with his early group that included the legendary Lyman Woodard on organ and Andrew Davis on drums.

Top musicians, blend elements unlike anything ever!!!
I first saw these guys play live which was amazing to see so many talented musicians together on one stage. To bring it all together, the experience of the jam. This is a must for Miles fans, for Logic fans, for Popper fans, for Worrel fans, for Falu.....Experimentation combining, "Grooves, melodies and vibes of the world united..." Yes indeed five stars.
