Heavy funk in a variety of cool colors - the first-ever collection of work from German sound library labels Golden Ring & Happy Records - and a real revelation to our ears! Grooves are plenty heavy throughout - lots of funky drums and burning basslines - with instrumentation that runs the gamut from choppy fusion to soundtrack-styled funk - often with lots of keyboards and guitar in the mix!
The labels are almost a refuge for players who'd previously cut more famous funky work at the MPS label - artists who include Peter Thomas, Klaus Weiss, and Sigi Schwab, all of whom make some key appearances here - moving at the same great funky jazz pace they were hitting earlier in the 70s. Other artists are more obscure, but equally great - and the set's a true treasure trove of funky grooves you'll be hard-pressed to find elsewhere. Titles include "Present News" and "Jumping Balls" by Klaus Weiss, "Sound Colours A" by Peter Thomas, "Getting High" and "Get The Groove" by Sigi Schwab, "Mr Marco's Blues" and "Chicago Song" by Ralph Marco, "Open Up" and "Pick It Up" by Frank Mantis, "Late Train" and "Dark Alley" by Ken Aldin, and "Just Funky" by Klaus Weiss. © 1996-2009, Dusty Groove America, Inc.

VA - Calypsoul 70 - Caribbean Soul & Calypso Crossover 1969-1979
A cool collection of funky grooves from the Caribbean — tracks that take a strong influence from American soul and funk, then blend it heavily with hip rhythms from the islands! A few of the names here are familiar, but most are relatively obscure — and put together, the tunes on the set illustrate a hugely under-tapped scene that's filled with wonderful tunes — tracks awash in jazzy rhythms, skittish percussion, and a range of styles that move past much more familiar Jamaican sounds from down south. Drums here are often quite heavy, and matched by other percussion as well — not to mention jagged guitar lines and bass bits that really send the whole thing home!

Here's the short and sweet...
Secondhand Sureshots is a filmed experiment in creative sound recycling. Dublab Dublab directors Bryan “Morpho” Younce & Mark "frosty" McNeill sent beatmakers Daedelus, Nobody, J.Rocc and Ras G on safari into L.A. thrift stores with orders to make new music out of five finds while the cameras filmed the whole process. The result is a mini-documentary about putting new life into old vinyl. Over 2 hours of footage, music & bonus material.
Secondhand Sureshots will be released Feb. 9, 2010 as DVD & CD, distributed by Stones Throw. Today on our web store we present the exclusive Secondhand Sureshots Deluxe Super Set.
The Deluxe Super Set is a true sound and vision experiment. Dublab scoured Southern California and rescued 500 gatefold LP covers from dusty thrift store bin obscurity. Our graphic friends at Hit+Run took the covers and screen-printed them by hand, making new visual masterpieces to house the first public release of Secondhand Sureshots. Stuffed in this package is all-exclusive material sampled and shredded into new forms fine-tuned to blow your mind. We hope it inspires you to make your own creative gems and jams!

A Dust Brother (Cheeba), a peripheral Beastie Boy (Money Mark), a Headhunter (Mike Clark), and a slew of other musicians join producer Aja West's tribute to Antonio Carlos Jobim. Throw in the fact that the album is mastered by Brian "Big Bass" Gardner, better known for his work with gangsta rap acts like N.W.A., and you start to see the hodge-podge of influences involved in this record.
Antonio's Giraffe is funky electric jazz. In that, it hints at the music of the other Antonio, but there the similarities end. While Aja West's original compositions harken to the era of Jobim, this is not a cover record.
Rhodes, horns, and drums ride high throughout. The percussion is exceptional as you might expect with a Headhunter manning the kit. There's nothing extravagant, just good solid rhythm for the other players to work from. The strength here is the Rhodes of both West and Alex Veley and the horn interplay.
"Hold Up" gives a perfect example of the Rhodes getting busy. While songs like "The Mighty Loconchu" show the coordination of the horn players at their best.
This is billed as a tribute to Antonio Carlos Jobim, but outside of the title, I wouldn't have picked up on that. In the end, it doesn't really matter. This is good music that stands on its own without any reference needed. -- C. W. Hall (Atlanta, GA USA)

Colorblind isn't an adequate title for this album. Randolph's follow-up to 2003's Grammy-nominated Unclassified is bright and energetic as a tie-dye-patterned pinwheel. Mostly its 11 tunes are about grooves plucked from the era of Sly Stone and Stevie Wonder, dappled with brilliant classic rock musicianship (think Jimi Hendrix and Jeff Beck) and driven by frenetic verve. When things slow down, it's usually to let the young pedal steel virtuoso revisit his roots in the Holiness Church, although the team of pop-world songwriters he collaborates with make the lyrics of Randolph's R&B hymns ambiguous between devotion to a woman or to God. Guests Dave Matthews (singing backup on "Love Is the Only Way") and Eric Clapton (lending second guitar to a hot-but-rote cover of the Doobie Brothers' hit "Jesus Is Just Alright") are oddly subdued, but neo-soul diva Leela James puts sex and smolder into her duet with Randolph on "Stronger." Ultimately, though, this album's all about Randolph himself, who has loosened his grip on the blues and gospel bedrock of his earlier playing to become a master of flashy funk and rock riffs and the owner of a tone so gargantuan it's earned him a place in rock-guitar Olympus--if not Heaven. ~Ted Drozdowski, Amazon.com

This album's all about the blazing virtuosity of Robert Randolph. The pop-music arrival of the young pedal-steel guitarist from the Pentecostal church was shepherded last year by the North Mississippi Allstars and groove organist John Medeski in a brilliant album and group called The Word. With his own Family Band and just one spiritual, the lovely "Pressing My Way," on the set list, Randolph sends lightning bolts through the audience in this August 2001 recording at a now-shuttered Manhattan club. He blends the showmanship of his blues inspiration, Stevie Ray Vaughan, with his own unique instrumental mastery, transforming his steel guitar into something more like a lead vocalist. Randolph constantly makes his 13-string guitar play call-and-response with his own singing, and he breathes fire into Slim Harpo's chestnut "Shake Your Hips" by making it a field day for his stabbing splashes of notes and chords, inventing a different melody for his long solos that's more western swing than swamp blues. Although the shout-and-stomp-along original, "I Don't Know What You Come to Do," raises the crowd, it's the 11-minute finale, "Tears of Joy," that is Randolph's showstopper. The tune's a crafty summation of all his gifts: slow, sliding, rich-toned notes and low-buzzing chords; rhythms that pull from the stately qualities of gospel (enhanced by the way Randolph's steel blends with John Ginty's Hammond organ) and the pure exhilaration of rock improvisation; and beautiful tones that echo from honky-tonk to Hendrix. It's the musical equivalent of a white-water thrill ride. Ted Drozdowski. All Music Guide

Oghene Kologbo & Afrobeat Academy- Remember Fela Anikulapo Kuti
Here's a must have for every fan of Afrobeat music - 'REMEMBER FELA ANIKULAPO KUTI' - The eagerly-awaited album of the legendary bass- and tenor-guitar-player Oghene Kologbo.
He's one of the true legends of Afrobeat music. Kologbo olayed on 37 albums with Fela Kuti and the Africa 70. He's carrying on the tradition with 10 songs recorded with the Afrobeat Academy
Guitar legend Oghene Kologbo was born in Warri, Nigeria in 1957. His father was a well known highlife musician. When Kologbo was a teenager, he began performing with the revolutionary Afrobeat master Fela Kuti. Kologbo went on to record more than 50 sides with Africa 70. He played the hypnotic tenor guitar lines, but often recorded bass and rhythm guitar too. Kologbo was Fela’s personal assistant and ‘tape recorder’. That is, it was his job to remember the melodies Fela would sing to him late at night, then teach them to the band at rehearsal the next day. In 1978, after a show at the Berlin Jazz Festival, Kologbo left the band (along with Tony Allen and a few others) and stayed in Berlin.
In the 1980s and 1990s, Kologbo worked with the legendary but short-lived Roots Anabo. He also toured and recorded with King Sunny Ade, Tony Allen, and Brenda Fosse, among others.
In 2005, Kologbo began working with the Afrobeat Academy, Berlin’s heaviest afrobeat ensemble.

Mebusas - Blood Brothers (1973/2009)
Best known for their cut Son of Mr Bulldog which was made available on the recent Afro Baby compilation on Soundway Records, The Mebusas lone LP Blood Brothers combines elements of American soul and funk, psychedelic rock, latin/carribean rhythms and traditional African music. Innovative arrangements, deep rhythms and top-notch playing make this 1973 album a true classic. This is the first ever reissue of this landmark album.
Beautiful grooves from the Nigerian scene of the 70s -- a set of really unique grooves, and the only-ever album from the enigmatic Mebusas! There's kind of a tripped-out feel to some of these tracks -- Afro Funk, but taken left of center from the style of Fela -- thanks to some weird keyboard bits, odd production touches, and some occasional psychedelic guitar -- which really fuzzes things up, and almost creates a cross-cultural vibe that should have gotten this album play up in London, or over in New York! Lyrics are in English, and some of the tracks have a heavy dose of American funk, too -- yet others are pure 70s African funk all the way through -- a wonderful blend of modes that really keeps things interesting. Titles include "Son Of Mr Bull Dog", "Do You Know", "Grooving Out On Life", "Kwashioko", "Blood Brothers", "Return/Pada", and "I Wonna Do It"

Mulatu Astatke- Mulatu Steps Ahead 2010
Following his acclaimed Inspiration Information collaboration with The Heliocentrics, the Father of Ethio jazz Mulatu Astatke presents his brand new studio album, Mulatu Steps Ahead, this Spring.
The album explores new directions in fusions of Western jazz with Ethiopian modes, moving forward the pioneering sound Mulatu developed during the '60s and '70s, showcased on the recent Strut compilation New York - Addis - London. For the new album, tracks were recorded with members of Either/Orchestra in Boston, with contributions by traditional Ethiopian musicians in Addis, members of The Heliocentrics and some of the U.K.'s leading jazz and African players during the final sessions in London in November 2009.
Each track on the album tells its own story. The reflective, meandering opener, "Radcliffe," was composed specifically for the Radcliffe Institute during Mulatu's time lecturing at Harvard in Boston – the original score is now framed on the wall there. "The Way To Nice" was written and arranged on the tour bus during Mulatu's recent French dates. "With this track, you are traveling on a long journey, talking and thinking," he explains. "It was inspired by the many beautiful places on the coast road around Nice."
"Assosa" adapts traditional music from the Assosa tribes in North-Western Ethiopia and "Mulatu's Mood" re-works a Mulatu jazz fusion composition from the early '90s into a new swinging Afro high life arrangement. "I wanted to use West African styles within this version and try new ways of using the beautiful sound of the kora," explains Mulatu.
"Boogaloo" and "I Faram Gami I Faram" reprise Mulatu classics with new, fuller scores while the bonus digital track "Derashe" highlights the traditional diminishing scales of the Derashe people of Southern Ethiopia, a musical technique that would later feature in the classical compositions of Debussy and the jazz of Charlie Parker. Says Mulatu, "Many debate how this music developed but the Derashe have played these scales for centuries. It is an untold story."

Isaac Hayes - Tough Guys [OST] (1974)
One of Isaac Hayes' richest soundtracks — deeper and more complicated than the groove of Shaft and Truck Turner, and filled with some great tunes that glow with color, life, and imagination — showing an Isaac Hayes that almost seems to be moving beyond the usual blackploitation groove! The album sports 2 really classic tunes — the title theme "Tough Guys", and the classic "Hung Up On My Baby" — both of which have a solidly funky feel that will more than please the usual soundtrack beathead crowd. But overall, the other tunes twist and turn in a delightful mix of modes — expanding on the soulful territory Ike first explored in his original soundtracks, and offering up a great range of moods and emotion. The album's got some especially great chromatic guitar work.

Isaac Hayes - Truck Turner [OST] (1974)
Massive work from Isaac Hayes — a hard and heavy soundtrack that we like even more than his classic work on Shaft! Unlike Shaft, Ike actually starred in the film Truck Turner — which may be one reason why he brought his full game to the table for the record — and scored a batch of badass tunes that still stand with some of the best funky soundtrack work of the 70s! The rhythm's especially hard on the best cuts — really crackling with a lot of intensity, and a stark, hard funky sound that's made the record a favorite of beatheads for years!

"Marvellous Marva", "Miss Excitement" Marva Whitney has been given a number of monikers over the years, but it was the late, great and sadly missed James Brown himself who summed it up best; dubbing her his "Soul Sister # 1".
Widely regarded as the funkiest of all James Brown's singers, Marva has been singing since childhood and first made her mark as part of the James Brown Revue in the late-1960's. However it wasn`t long before the Kansas born soulstress was cutting records of her own, many of which have since become rare-groove collectors items.
Marva`s aim to make "real soul music, that touches you and makes you dance" has seen a string of releases over the years, which have provided some of the hardest working samples in hip hop. The 45 King's classic "The 900 Number" features the looped sax intro from Marva's "Unwind Yourself", (although popularized by Chad Jackson's "Hear The Drummer Get Wicked"), along with many a career credited to her version of "It`s My Thing".
Since the rejuvenated interest in all thing funky (thanks to Mark Ronson et all!) the time is right for Marva to step back into the limelight and reclaim her crown as Soul Sister #1. Produced by Soulpower's DJ Pari and Ryo Nakata and recorded in Tokyo and Kansas City, this album features all new material, recorded in the style of 1969`s classic. It`s My Thing album. Fans will appreciate the raw and live, punchy feel of the tracks alongside some smoother moments which allow Marva to really do her thing belt out that classic soul!
