13. Rick James - Fire and Desire (7:18)

Motown's Ultimate Collection line has been a massive success in putting together definitive single-disc compilations of their greatest artists, and the Rick James installment is no exception. Because this one includes some lengthier workouts, it isn't quite as complete as most of the series, but it does provide an essential look at James in his influential prime, leaving very little of his sex-and-drugs ethos to the imagination. Spanning the years 1978-1983, these 13 tracks paint an effective picture of James' groundbreaking fusion of funk, rock, and new wave, which basically constituted hardcore funk's last hurrah as the disco age wound down and the urban contemporary genre began to take shape. Unlike most of the other volumes, this Ultimate Collection isn't arranged chronologically; instead, it kicks off with James' three number one R&B hits: "Cold Blooded," "Give It to Me Baby," and "You and I." From there the collection branches out into a generous selection from his best album, Street Songs (five in all), including his signature tune "Super Freak"; the R&B Top Tens "Mary Jane," "Dance Wit' Me," and "Bustin' Out"; and duets with Smokey Robinson ("Ebony Eyes") and protégée Teena Marie ("Fire and Desire"). It's true that later hits like "17," "Can't Stop," "Glow," "Sweet and Sexy Thing," and "Loosey's Rap" are missing. But frankly, James was past his creative prime when he recorded them, and they're not missed compared to what's here. With Stevie Wonder in a sudden creative downturn, this material almost single-handedly kept Motown Records on the charts as the '70s became the '80s, and it certainly paved the way for the hedonistic computer funk that made Prince a superstar in the '80s. A superb introduction.

7 I Miss My Baby (Mono Single Mix) 4:01

CD Description

The Funkadelic who had made the albums, "Funkadelic", "Free Your Mind And Your Ass Will Follow" and "Maggot Brain" collapsed in on themselves under the pressures of touring and nefarious substances in 1972, although some members shuttled back and forth between Detroit and Toronto and kept recording. One of the side projects embarked upon was an LP by a group called U.S. One single, `Baby I Owe You Something Good' b/w `I Miss My Baby', appeared that year credited to U.S. music with Funkadelic. An album reached test-pressing stage, but until now no more has been heard of it.
U.S. (which stood for United Soul) were from George Clinton's home town of Plainfield, New Jersey. They included future Funkadelic members Gary Shider and brothers Cordell and Larry Mosson. U.S. recorded in Detroit and Toronto with the album produced by Bernie Worrell, Ray Davies and Fuzzy Haskins. In addition it featured many Funkadelic musicians.
The original album master of five tracks includes some prime era Funkadelic grooves, including the outrageous `Rat Kiss The Cat On The Navel' and `Be What You Is', both uptempo psychedelic funk; the wonderful gospel-imbued vocals of Shider on `I Miss My Baby'; and the opener `This Broken Heart'. When the LP wasn't issued the group split up and Funkadelic co-opted some of their members.
This release is part of Ace Records' Westbound 40th Aniversary celebrations. A truly historic lost album it is the first off-shoot from the Parliafunkadelicment Thang, that became a whole industry in itself.

Kool Is Back! Imitations, Interpolations & The Inspiration of Kool & The Gang

Artist: Various Artists
Title Of Album: Kool Is Back! Imitations, Interpolations & The Inspiration of Kool & The Gang
Year Of Release: March 24, 2009
Label: Le Smoke Disque
Genre: Funk

For our fourth installment, we've chosen a band best known for their tame early 80s repertoire. Mention the song "Celebration" and your geriatric grandmother would know you were referring to Kool & The Gang's biggest hit. But even though we at Le Smoke Disque have nothing but love for the band's late 70s and early 80s producer, Brazilian jazz legend Eumir Deodato, we want to show you the influence Robert "Kool" Bell and his compatriots had on the world when they burst on the scene in 1969 with their self titled debut. Though James Brown's JBs certainly stood out as a funky take on the big-band ensemble popularized in the swinging 1940s, Kool & The Gang took the form to its greatest heights. In doing so, they not only influenced American bands such as Tower of Power, Chicago and Blood, Sweat and Tears, but fledgling funk outfits the world over. We could have shown the band's influence on the mainstream by compiling the multitude of tributes paid by jazz greats such as Melvin Sparks and Grant Green. But we like to dig deeper than that. We start in Central and South America, where the band's eponymous hit single could have provided enough fodder for a compilation in its own right. We've decided only to include two versions here: "Los Pelos Tiesos" by Mexican funk-monsters Rabbits and Carrots and Brazilian trombonist Ed Maciel's 90-MPH burner. And, as a counterpoint to the assumption that by the late 70s, only The Gang's smooth sound hit the foreign shores, we offer up Tyree Glenn, Jr. and his post-punk outfit Brain Damage funking "Kool & The Gang" live in Germany in 1979. "Give It Up", a lesser known single from the band's first album, finds two offerings here. Thailand's The Impossibles offer a heady version fortified by fine drum breaks on the only album the band released abroad (in Sweden, of all places!). Akron, Ohio's Jessie McDaniel double-times the tune on one of his too-rare 7"s released on the small Top-Hit label. Perhaps at some point in the future, we'll revisit Kool & The Gang and examine their mid-70s oeuvre. Their sublime synth-anthem "Summer Madness" alone makes the search for covers of that era's classics worthwhile. But for now we re content to bask in the warmth of The Gang's golden era, to ponder "Funky" George's steady syncopation, to catch an earful of tough brass and Kool's funky bass. Yes, for the moment, Kool Is Back!, again.

16. Manteca - Paquito D'Rivera

Jazz and Latin music are each irresistible on their own. Ritmo de la Noche combines them with a brilliance that would shame a rainbow. This collection of Latin jazz classics includes jazz men such as flutist Herbie Mann, who embraces tough Cuban rhythms on Horace Silver's "Senor Blues," from 1965, and the Fania All Stars' conga man, Ray Barretto, gliding into smooth-jazz territory with 1979's infectious "La Cuna." Astrud Gilberto brings bossa nova into the mix with the seductive "Ponteio" from 1971, featuring Stanley Turrentine playing the Stan Getz role on sax. Argentina's Gato Barbieri wields his familiar sultry tenor saxophone on the cha-cha-cha "Sweet Glenda," while perennial crossover star Carlos Santana hitches his unmistakable Bay Area barrio rock to 1973's percolating "Samba de Sausalito." The genius of the individual songs is matched by the effortless flow of the entire disc. And seminal selections like Mongo Santamaria's "Watermelon Man" from 1965 benefit from the clean and detailed remastered versions here. --Bob Tarte

Azymuth - Butterfly (2008)

is Rio-based jazz/funk/samba trio have been around since the early 70s and started recording for London's Far Out label two decades later. Butterfly is their latest new material for the label – an agreeably smooth, easy going album that's difficult to dislike, but equally, unless you're a hardcore fan, hard to get hugely excited about, by its very laid back nature.

They call what they do samba doido ('crazy samba') but the samba only really manifests itself surfaces occasionally, with the odd twinge of cuica (friction drum), or as on the extraordinary mid-tune percussion breakdown that busts through the veneer of cruisy jazz funk on Avenida Rio Branco.

The core members Jose Roberto Bertrami (keyboards) Alex Malheiros (bass, acoustic guitar) and drummer Ivan Conti are joined by several excellent guests, most notably flautist/saxophonist Ze Carlos and Arthur Verocai, whose guitar solo on New Dawn seems to have been relocated from the Steely Dan songbook. Vocals are pared right down to the occasional scat, as on the breezy Meu Doce Amigo and the chorus of Os Cara La – ''Os Cara La'' chanted over and over in pleasingly dippy fashion.

Bertrami drizzles tasty liquid honey solos from his Fender Rhodes and Hammond organ, especially sweet on New Dawn, while Conti simply dazzles on the frisky, polyrhythic Triagem, on which it would be easy to imagine Tania Maria as a guest vocalist. And Malheiros is one seriously funky bass player. The sparingly used string section give Herbie Hancock's title track a wonderfully spacey lightness that recalls Chris Bowden's Time Capsule album, and the Hancock influence reappears in the grainy, business-like synth sounds of Hole In One.

What sounds like a reco-reco (guiro) makes a weird gasping effect on both Butterfly and Next Summer In Rio, effectively book ending the album. Okay, so the latter treads a fine line between carefree strolling and pedestrian predictability. This may well be music for airport waiting lounges or perhaps the moving staircases of vacuous tropical shopping malls. But if you insist on going to such places, why not do it in style? (c)

"This 1974 debut from psychedelic Brazilian funkateers Azymuth gets the remaster/reissue treatment it deserves. Displaying their unique melding of electric jazz, funk, and the casual swing of Brazilian samba, 'Azimuth' is a classic album and the perfect playground for the remix talent that contributes to the second disc. Peanut Butter Wolf lends a production hand to the breezy, organ-led jazz of "Morning," while remix don Spiritual South deftly reworks "Wait For My Turn" from slo-mo funk into cut 'n' paste samba. The revitalization process continues throughout with new takes on old classics by Recloose, Marc Mac, and Yam Who?" - XLR8R (April '07)

"This long lost Azymuth jewel gets a repress from Far Out - part historical document, part springboard for an album of remixes and re-edits by today's finest producers. The original album is worth checking for the seeds of what would become the Azymuth sound, particularly the Brazilian boogie funk of 'Caca A Raposa'. But the rework album offers some real bullets tho, none smacking harder than the opener 'Melo Dos Dois Bicudos,', which gets the Mark 'Harmonic 33' Pritchard treatment. Well worth checking." - Straight No Chaser (Spring '07)

:: i N F O ::
When The Beastie Boys hit platinum with their debut album, they
were instantly labeled the Elvises of rap, accused of being just
another bunch of white musicians stealing from black music. But
what was overlooked was that the Beasties actually ... Full
Descriptionhad some interesting ideas to take hip hop to new
levels. While in the years to come other white rappers like
Vanilla Ice and Jesse Jaymes would prove they were the true
cultural thieves, the Beasties defended themselves by recording a
seminal rap album, PAUL'S BOUTIQUE. The record was, in fact, so
legit that it eroded their commercial appeal in middle America.

PAUL'S BOUTIQUE is a sample-fest--a post-modern epic of cut and
splice studio wizardry. Taking snippets of music from sources as
disparate as Curtis Mayfield, The Beatles, B.D.P., The Ramones and
The Jaws soundtrack (as well as countless others), they built
songs out of the debris of modern culture. Over these mind-blowing
tracks, they weaved tall tales, self-promotional proclamations and
sheer non-sense into a singular vision of inspired lunacy. Besides
Public Enemy, no one else was producing albums as complex as this.
PAUL'S BOUTIQUE sounds two or three years ahead of its time,
perhaps this is why the album was considered such a failure upon
its release.

Whatever the case, there really is no album that sounds quite like
this one does; the Beasties returned to the top of the charts a
few years later with CHECK YOUR HEAD, but they may never be able
to top the originality and depth of their stunning sophomore
effort.

Voices Of East Harlem - Right On Be Free (remastered & expanded) - 1970

The Voices Of East Harlem were a community choir that grew from an inner city action project in 1969. A fluid 20-member ensemble whose ages ranged from 12 to 21, their music mixed devotional gospel fervor with commercial R&B and soul, and included lead vocalists Gerri Griffin and Monica Burress. Coming to the attention of Elektra boss Jac Holzman via their producer Jerry Brandt, they were signed in 1970 for their debut “Right On Be Free”, which showcased a diverse song selection from Buffalo Springfield’s “For What It’s Worth, to Richie Haven’s “Run Shaker Life”, all performed in their distinctive high-energy style. A follow-up single “Oxford Town” appeared in 1971, produced by Donny Hathaway who was scheduled to produce a second Elektra album, rumoured to have been called “Brothers & Sisters”; the session logs actually refer to it as “Nation Time” (written by Kenny Gamble & Leon Huff). Both sides of the Elektra 45 plus the other aborted tracks from these sessions appear on this remastered & expanded edition for the first time in 36 years, and are bolstered by the last single “Angry” plus two live tracks recorded at the “Soul To Soul” concert in Ghana in 1971.

ALBINO! Live In San Francisco

Live in San Francisco was recorded in July of 2006 during ALBINO’s performance at the Second Annual Afrofunk Festival. “We were amazed by how well the ecstatic energy of ALBINO’s live set was captured in this recording so we knew we had to release it as soon as we heard it,” says the band’s co-founder and tenor saxophonist Nathan Endsley.

According to the SF Weekly, "ALBINO's ass-inspiriting percussive engine comes from a rhythm section of local all-stars; together, they form rhythms based in the West African tradition which holds at its heart the inseparable union of drumming and dance. Atop the band's rhythmic maelstrom ride tightly figured five-part horn lines. The section's 'heavy heavy' bottom end features a snarling dual baritone-sax yawp. This is world music that lives up to the name."

In keeping with the revolutionary message central to Fela’s Afrobeat legacy, the majority of songs on Live in San Francisco offer scathing sociopolitical commentary and urgent calls to civic action. For example, “Deconstruction of the Transitional Movement” confronts the erosion of American civil liberties in the name of national security. “Are We Safe Yet?” questions our current administration’s misdirected military aggression in Iraq and its perpetuation of a culture of fear in the name of counter-terrorism. Furthermore, “No Go Sell Me” is a tirade against consumer culture and the advertising industry’s pollution of the media. Finally, “Puppet Boy” skewers a certain incompetent, fraudulently elected Chief Executive by pulling back the curtain to expose the ominous forces Roving behind this figurehead.

Albino-Rhino

The SF Music Award-winning ALBINO! is a ten-piece Afrobeat ensemble that honors the fiery legacy of Nigerian musical revolutionary Fela Kuti. ALBINO's high-energy grooves and explosive stage show thick with hypnotic percussion, a heavy horn section, African dance, outrageous costumes, and infectious group choreography have established the band as the West Coast's premier Afrobeat act.

"In 2005, Voted as one of Next 100 Upcoming Bands. Akoya is developing a reputation for whipping dance floors into a frenzy with their fusion of African, Afro-Cuban, Jazz and Funk music...Akoya is poised to make an impact in the budding global Afrobeat movement." – URB Magazine

Kokolo - Heavy Hustling

KOKOLO AFROBEAT ORCHESTRA's fourth album, HEAVY HUSTLING, finds the NYC powerhouse group expertly mashing up Fela Kuti stylings into James Brown classics with a twist of Latin and Jamaican flavors thrown into the mix. This album is without question their best offering to date and showcases KOKOLO at the height of its innovative powers. Kokolo, one of the most well known and with best reputation afrobeat act around with 4 albums, 14x 7" and 12" releases and numerous worldwide tours under the belt, made not just another by-the-numbers homage to "The Godfather of Soul": this record breathes new life into the genre and demonstrates what the contemporary deep funk scene sounds like.

Anticipated by heavily playlisted first single "Soul Power", on Heavy Hustlyng you'll find other great classics from "Mr.Dynamite" such as "please please please", "think", "it's a new day" and "bring it up" all coocked with the unique Kokolo Afrobeat Orchestra style. More than an album...HEAVY HUSTLING is a sign of the times. If it doesn't make you wanna move, consider yourself officially dead!

Kokolo will do a worldwide tour starting from March 08 to launch the new album.

"Kokolo have got the groove.. Anyone wanting to get low down and dirty, should look no further. This will get the bodies on the dance floor moving like never before" **** Clash www.clashmusic.com"

"A big fat take on james brown classics. Funk for the 21st century!" Eddie Piller (Q Radio)

A crise segundo Einstein:

A crise segundo Einstein:

Jerry Lee Lewis - Last Man Standing (2006)

Artists: Jerry Lee Lewis
Album: Last Man Standing
Label: Naive
Year: 2006
Genre: Rock'n Roll; Country
Format: mp3/ CBR 320 kbps, 44.1kHz, Stereo
Size: 134 Mb

It often seems like there are only two ways for rock, country, and blues veterans to launch comebacks when they're senior citizens: confront mortality head on or surround yourself with superstar guests to help carry you through a half-hearted stroll through your back catalog, scattering a few new tunes along the way. At first glance, Jerry Lee Lewis' Last Man Standing seems to fall into both categories: the title suggests that Jerry Lee is in the mood to take a long look back, and certainly the very concept of the album -- pairing Lewis with 21 other stars for a succession of duets, often on material that his guests either wrote or made famous -- seems like a typical superstar duet record. But the Killer has never been predictable, and nowhere is that truer than it is here, where Jerry Lee treats Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, John Fogerty, Bruce Springsteen, Jimmy Page, and 16 other stars as he treated the Nashville Teens at the Star Club in 1964 -- as game amateurs who have to sprint to keep up with the master. This is the only guest-studded superstar album where all the guests bend to the will of the main act, who dominates the proceedings in every conceivable way. Jerry Lee doesn't just run the guests ragged; he turns their songs inside out, too -- and nowhere is that clearer than on the opening "Rock and Roll," the Led Zeppelin classic that is now stripped of its signature riff and sounds as if it were a lost gem dug out of the Sun vaults. Far from struggling with this, Jimmy Page embraces it, following the Killer as he runs off on his own course -- he turns into support, and the rest of other 20 guests follow suit (with the possible exception of Kid Rock, who sounds like the party guest who won't go home on an otherwise strong version of "Honky Tonk Woman").

The label might sell Last Man Standing on the backs of the duet partners -- after all, it's awful hard to drum up interest in a record by a 71-year-old man no matter how great he is, so you need a hook like superstars -- but the album by no stretch of the imagination belongs to them. This is completely Jerry Lee's show from the second that he calls out, "It's been a long time since I rock & rolled," at the beginning of the record -- and those are true words, since he hasn't rocked on record in a long, long time. Ten years ago he cut the Andy Paley-produced Young Blood, but that was a typically tasteful self-conscious comeback record; it was driven as much by the producer's conception of the artist as it was the artist himself. The opposite is true here, where the production is simple and transparent, never interfering with the performances; it has the welcome effect of making it sound like there is simply no way to tame Jerry Lee, even though he's now in his seventies. And that doesn't mean that this is merely a hard-rocking record, although "Rock and Roll," "Pink Cadillac," and "Travelin' Band" do indeed rock harder than anything he's done since the '70s -- so hard that they stand proudly next to his classic Sun records, even if they don't have the unbridled fire of those peerless sides. No, this album touches on everything that Jerry Lee has done musically through his career, as the furious rock & roll is balanced by pure hardcore country, pile-driving boogie woogie, rambling blues, old-timey folk songs, and, especially, reinterpretations of familiar songs that are so thoroughly reimagined they seem like they were written specifically for Jerry Lee. And he does this the same way he's always done it: by singing and playing the hell out of the songs. His phrasing remains original and unpredictable, twisting phrases in unexpected ways -- and, yes, throwing his name into the mix frequently, too -- and his piano is equally vigorous and vital. This is a record that stays true to his music, and in doing so, it's not so much a comeback as it is a summation: a final testament from a true American original, one that explains exactly why he's important. But that makes Last Man Standing sound too serious, as if it were one of those self-consciously morbid Johnny Cash records -- no, this is a record that celebrates life, both in its joys and sorrows, and it's hard not to see it as nothing short of inspiring. ~Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Chuck Berry - The Latest and the Greatest/You Never Can Tell

Artists: Chuck Berry
Album: The Latest and the Greatest/You Never Can Tell...
Label: BGO
Year: 1964
Genre: Rock'n Roll, Blues
Format: mp3/ CBR 320 kbps, 44.1kHz, Stereo
Size: 127,5 Mb

The value of this two-on-one CD from England's Beat Goes On Records is greater than the sum of its parts -- most of the important tracks here can be found on either the Chuck Berry box or one of the individual MCA-Chess CDs, but they sound infinitely better here, in new late-'90s transfers, than they do on MCA's mid-'80s digital editions. And "good" in this case means they're clean but mean, crisp but raunchy, not like the over-cleaned up versions off of the Chess Box's first disc. The notes are a bit vague as far as the origins of the two LPs are concerned -- they were patchwork creations from recent singles and old U.S. album tracks, done specifically for the British market by Pye Records -- but the sound makes up for those shortcomings. ~Bruce Eder

John Lee Hooker with the Groundhogs - Hooker & the Hogs

John Lee Hooker with the Groundhogs - Hooker & the Hogs
Artists: John Lee Hooker with the Groundhogs
Album: Hooker & the Hogs
Label: Castle Us
Year: 1965
Genre: Rhythm'n Blues
Format: mp3/ CBR 320 kbps, 44.1kHz, Stereo
Size: 77,1 Mb

McPhee and the Groundhogs' most important musical legacy, this 1996 reissue of Hooker & The Hogs has an unusual history. Tony McPhee and the Groundhogs first played with John Lee Hooker in June of 1964, when John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers were unable to fulfill a commitment to back Hooker on the final week of his British tour. The Groundhogs were deputized on the spot and played their first show with him at the Twisted Wheel in Manchester. At the end of the week, Hooker told McPhee how much he liked working with his band and agreed to use the Groundhogs as his backing band on his next visit to England. Hooker was back in May and June of 1965, and not only used them as his band but recorded this album with the Groundhogs. The band was Tony McPhee on guitar, Peter Cruickshank on bass, Dave Boorman on drums, and Tom Parker on keyboards -- some of the stuff here may have surfaced elsewhere, on the Interchord label (as Don't Want Nobody) with brass dubbed on, but this release consists of the undubbed recordings. The sound is raw, tight, and raunchy, some of the best band-backed recordings of Hooker's career. He's notoriously difficult to play support for because of the spontaneity of his work, but these guys keep up and then some, adding engaging flourishes and grace notes. Hooker is in excellent voice, and his material is as strong as any album in his output, rough, dark, and moody. The ominous, surging "Little Dreamer" is worth the price of admission all by itself. The 11 tracks with the Groundhogs are rounded out with four Hooker solo bonus tracks, which are even louder and more savage than the Groundhogs' stuff, though a little noisy (like that ever mattered with The Hook). ~Bruce Eder

John Lee Hooker - Never Get Out of the Blues Alive (1972)

Artists: John Lee Hooker
Album: Never Get Out of the Blues Alive
Label: Universal
Year: 1972
Genre: Rhythm'n Blues, Boogie
Format: mp3/ CBR 320 kbps, 44.1kHz, Stereo
Size: 79,4 Mb

Following the legendary bluesman's popular collaboration with Canned Heat, this album continues his work with mostly younger musicians and predates similar projects The Healer and Mr. Lucky by about 20 years. Van Morrison spans the gap by appearing on this 1972 release and Mr. Lucky. Elvin Bishop, Charlie Musselwhite, and even Steve Miller contribute here. Jazz violinist Michael White helps "Boogie With the Hook" take off and adds a mournful touch to the harrowing "T.B. Sheets," which is much more restrained here than on the earlier debut release by Morrison. ~Mark Allan

01 Bumble Bee Blues
02 Hit the Road
03 Country Boy
04 Boogie With the Hook
05 T.B. Sheets
06 Letter to My Baby
07 Never Get Out of These Blues Alive
