Average White Band (Discography)

AWB was formed in 1971 by Alan Gorrie[1] and Malcolm "Molly" Duncan, with Onnie McIntyre[2], Hamish Stuart[3], Roger Ball and Robbie McIntosh[4] joining them in the original line-up. Duncan and Ball, affectionately known as the Dundee Horns, studied at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art (now part of the University of Dundee), and were previously members of Mogul Thrash. Gorrie and McIntyre had been members of Forever More.

The band's breakthrough was a support slot at Eric Clapton's comeback concert in 1973. MCA Records released their debut album, Show Your Hand, which sold poorly. Bruce McCaskill, who was Clapton's tour manager, liked the band's music and agreed to manage them. He borrowed money to take them to the U.S. and to promote them. McCaskill had many contacts from his days with Clapton and managed to get Atlantic Records to sign them. The band relocated to New York, signed to Atlantic and released the follow-up, AWB, better known as "The White Album". This album was the first of many with renowned producer Arif Mardin, and reached #1 in the U.S. Hot 100 chart.
McIntosh died of a heroin overdose on 23 September 1974. (Gorrie also overdosed but Cher kept him conscious until medical help arrived.)[5] McIntosh was replaced by Steve Ferrone (of Bloodstone, and, like McIntosh, previously with Brian Auger's Oblivion Express).
In 1975, the single "Pick Up The Pieces" from the album AWB also reached #1 in the U. S. chart. The track is probably their best known today. The band followed up with LPs Cut the Cake (1975) and Soul Searching (1976), both big sellers and yielding further Top 40 singles. Cut the Cake was dedicated by the surviving band members to Robbie McIntosh's memory. Their next LP, Benny & Us, was a collaboration with soul legend Ben E. King.
After several more albums, AWB's audience and sales dwindled. Their 1980 disco hit "Let's Go Round Again" (UK #12), was covered in the late 1990s by Louise. The group disbanded by 1982. Ferrone went on to work with Duran Duran whilst Hamish Stuart joined Paul McCartney's touring group. In 1985 Gorrie released a solo album, Sleepless Nights. Gorrie, McIntyre, and Ball reunited in 1989 to record Aftershock, but Ball left the band shortly after its release. Eliot Lewis co-wrote with Gorrie on this album and joined the band, replacing lead singer Hamish Stuart.
Average White Band has continued recording (Soul Tattoo 1997, Face to Face, 1999) and touring since. When Eliot Lewis left AWB in September 2002 to pursue other musical opportunities, he was replaced by Klyde Jones (see [6]). Their most recent album release in April 2003 was entitled Living in Colour.
AWB's line-up then included Alan Gorrie (bass, lead vocals), Klyde Jones (guitar, keyboard, lead vocals), Onnie McIntyre (guitar, vocals), Fred Vigdor (sax, keyboard, vocals) and Brian Dunne (drums). Gorrie and McIntyre are the only remaining original members of the band.
Brian Dunne was replaced by Rocky Bryant as drummer for the 2006 tour.

The Herbaliser Band — Session One (2000)

Session One is an album released by The Herbaliser on 26 May 2000. While the band had been together since the mid 1990s, contributing to and promoting Herbaliser's largely electronically produced albums, this was the first and to date the only studio album recorded with a live band. It is also the only album released under the group name The Herbaliser Band.

Each track is a live band representation of a track from the first three Herbaliser albums, Remedies, Blow Your Headphones and Very Mercenary. Most tracks are completely instrumental, and vocals are only present in sample form on two tracks ("Who's the Realest?" and "The Sensual Woman").

The music is a unique mix of jazz/funk/hip hop with the classic 'big band' sound. ©

Ohio Players (1968 - 1981) (18 albums)

The Ohio Players combine funk, disco, country, jazz, soul, and rock to create a uniquely danceable, multilayered, and memorable sound. The band reached an apex of popularity in the 1970s during the funk and disco era and with the advent of rap and hip-hop, has enjoyed an enthusiastic renaissance since the mid-1990s.

The brainchild of guitarist Robert Ward, the group began as the Ohio Untouchables in Dayton, Ohio, in 1959. Bassist Marshall Jones, saxophonist and flutist Clarence "Satch" Satchell, and trumpeter Ralph "Pee Wee" Middlebrook comprised the unchanging core of the group over the decades. Apart from this trio, the band's membership changed countless times over the course of almost four decades. Guitarist and vocalist Leroy "Sugarfoot" Bonner, keyboardist and percussionist William "Billy" Beck, conga player Robert "Kuumba" Jones, trumpeter Marvin "Merv" Pierce, percussionist James "Diamond" Williams, and rhythm guitarist and vocalist Clarence "Chet" Willis completed the band in the 1990s.
As the Ohio Untouchables, the group worked backup in Detroit for the Falcons--whose lead singer was the young and incomparable Wilson Pickett--on their 1962 hit single "I Found a Love." Five years later, in 1967, the Untouchables changed their name to the Ohio Players, moved back to Dayton, and performed as a funky, soulful octet.
The group then moved to Los Angeles and remained there until the end of the 1960s before relocating once again back to their home state of Ohio. The funk and rhythm and blues music of the early 1970s was heavily influenced by bands like Sly & the Family Stone-- bands that fused rock with funk and soul. The Ohio Players were eager to experiment as well, and their funky sound grew more progressive and distinctive. "Sugarfoot" Bonner added a nasal, almost comical quality to the band's vocal sound, rendering their singles danceable and catchy.
The Ohio Players released their debut album, Pain, in 1971 on Detroit's Westbound Records, a label shared by George Clinton's Funkadelic band. They followed their debut with Pleasure a year later, then Ecstasy in 1973. The albums were only moderately successful, but the recording experience was invaluable for the band to hone its signature trademarks: large horn-powered tracks, odd background sounds such as whistles and alarms, and absurd, salacious lyrics. In 1974 the Ohio Players signed with Mercury Records; by then the band's fluctuating membership had finally stabilized.
The Ohio Players' southern Ohio environment shaped their diverse tastes and the breadth of their musical knowledge. James Brown recorded many of his greatest hits in Cincinnati's King Records studio in the 1950s and 1960s, the soulful Isley Brothers and funk superstar Bootsy Collins were both products of the Cincinnati music scene, and during the 1970s and 1980s dance groups such as Lakeside, the Deele, Midnight Star, and Slave also emerged from the southern Ohio region.
There were no radio stations in southern Ohio that played strictly black music in the early and mid-1970s, so the Ohio Players would cover whatever was on the radio, which was usually an eclectic mix such as Peter, Paul & Mary, Grand Funk Railroad, Tower of Power, and the Jazz Crusaders. To attract the attention of record store browsers, the band became known for its racy album jackets, usually featuring an undressed woman in a suggestive pose. When they switched over to Mercury Records, the risque cover tradition continued; for example, one album pictured a nude woman covered in honey. In time, even people who did not purchase the Ohio Players' albums began to look forward to the band's next album jacket.
In 1974 the Ohio Players released their first album for Mercury, Skin Tight, and ushered in a three-year run at the top of the R&B and dance music charts. The singles "Skin Tight" and "Jive Turkey" were both Top Ten R&B hits. The Ohio Players were adding more and more sound effects with each album, and when Fire was released in 1974, it pushed the envelope even further with sirens, high-pitched squeals, and space bleeps.
Fire is arguably the crown jewel in the Ohio Players' collection of albums. The bandmembers listened to the LP's tracks--without the vocals--in Los Angeles with Stevie Wonder, and they each knew even then that the album was going to be a tremendous hit. The title track was created out of a high-octane instrumental jam session, fusing funk, rock, and fiery drums. It became the band's first Number One single on the pop charts.
Fire also included a rare stab at social commentary with the single "I Want to Be Free." Aside from this album, the Ohio Players avoided heavy or moralistic lyrics, preferring a lighthearted, silly, almost nonsensical approach to their music. The band's next Number One single was "Love Rollercoaster" on the Honey album in 1975, followed by "Who'd She Coo?" in 1976 on Contradiction; then the string of hit singles ended. "O-H-I-O," released on Angel in 1977, was the band's last major single to become a hit, but the Ohio Players continued to tour well into the 1990s.
The influence of the Ohio Players is obvious in the music of the 1990s. Their songs have been heavily sampled by West Coast rap and hip-hop groups, most notably Dr. Dre and his "G-Funk" sound. Primus, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Soundgarden have all borrowed stylistically from the Ohio Players, and Soundgarden covered their single "Fopp" note for note.
With an extensive touring schedule and the 1995 release of the Mercury/Chronicles "Funk Essentials" collection--a seven-album overview of 1970s funk-rock-soul music that includes a compilation of the Ohio Players' material called Funk on Fire!--the band remained in the musical limelight two decades after the release of their best-known songs.

Mighty Super Funk - Rare 45s & Undiscovered Masters 1967 to 1978 Vol 6

Our favorite kind of funk is Super Funk - and this fab entry to the long-running series definitely keeps up the groove! As before, there's plenty of rare tracks here - most pulled from obscure singles of late 60s/early 70s vintage - and some even from rare studio tapes that were never issued at the time! Most tracks are short, with a nicely gritty groove - the kind of funky 45 madness that will always keep us digging for rare 7" singles - put together by the BGP crew with a real understanding of the groove! There's some especially nice female singers in the mix - almost creating a mini Sister Funk focus on the package - but there's also great guy singers and groups too. 20 tracks in all - with cuts that include "The Sneak" by The Douzer, "Queen Of Losers" by Eleanor Rigby, "Groovy Baby" by Kim Tamanga, "It's Mookie Time" by Cleveland Eaton & The Kats, "Party Time" by James Carpenter, "Moving Woman" by 87th Off Broadway, "Bad Bad Woman (part 1)" by Marie Franklin, "He Say She Say" by Chet Ivey, "Cold Sweat" by Julio Zavalla, "Shakin Up The Nation" by The Radiations, "One Sweet Song" by Gloria Lucas, and "I'm Moving Home" by Mary Alice McCall. © 1996-2008, Dusty Groove America, Inc.

Welcome To The Party (2008)

Here at Jazzman we are all about rescuing esoteric, forgotten and obscure auditory delights from yesteryear, and we unleash them onto a world that's starved for a musical alternative to popular dross. So many millions of songs, some good and many bad, have been recorded these past 50 years, yet so many of the amazing ones have slipped through the net, never to be heard of againà

Unfortunately the times present us with a situation where not everyone has access to a phonograph which will reveal the sonic delights of these plastic masterpieces. These unlucky individuals have yet to experience the hip-shaking soulful grind of Sheila Wilkerson, nor have they become enchanted by the Middle-Eastern twang of Egyptian drummer Salah Ragab and his Cairo Jazz Band. They have not been seduced by Della Reese as she swoons and sways her way around Hollywood's Playboy night club, and nor have they got down to the nitty-gritty low down funk of Bobby Williams & his Mar-Keys.

Keep On Struttin': A Tribute To The Meters 2009

A massive tribute to The Meters - one that features rare versions of some of their best funky classics! If you dig The Meters, you'll no doubt recognize most of the tunes - but you've probably never heard them in these versions before - as most of them are pulled from the farthest reaches of the 60s and 70s funky underground! Most numbers change things up a bit in terms of instrumentation - using a guitar where you might normally hear an organ, tipping the rhythm a bit more towards one speed or another - but all of them continue strongly that chunky, gritty approach to instrumental funk the New Orleans combo first forged in the late 60s - a legacy that still lives on in lots of current work, but which sounds even fresher in these rare gems from years back. There's also a few original compositions by some of these artists, but they're all tunes that fall strongly within a classic Meters groove - and titles include "Cissy Strut" by Rod Piazza, "Flight Of The Phoenix" by Dennis The Fox, "Slot Machine" by Duke Of Burlington, "Cissy Strut" by King Herbert & The Knights, "Cardova" by Syd Jones & The Gay Troubadours, "The Cissy's Thang" by The Soul Seven, "Look Ka Py Py" by The Invaders, "Chicken Strut" by King Herbert & The Knights, "Madrox" by Big Band Katouuice, "Cissy Strut" by Sacramento Senior High School, "Big Splash" by Band It, and "Soul Heart Transplant" by Ebony Rhythm Band.

PERCUSSION INSTRUMENTS USED:

Guiro, Boo-bams, Rhythm Logs, Celeste, Marimba, Xylophone, Bells, Pu Ili (or Pui
Sticks), Kalaau, Uli Uli, Tympani, Timbales, Conga Drum, Bongos, Maracas, Finger
Cymbals (or "Ching-Chings"), Electric Bass, String Bass, and Triangle.

The beautiful music of Polynesia, including Hawaii, has many surprises. At its best,
as in this superbly recorded and arranged package, it represents a fusion of the
melodic approach of American popular music with the rhythm of the Latin American
countries. Similarly, this unusual and brilliant album contains many surprises. Who
would think that The Hawaiian War Chant, for example would make a perfect
cha-cha? Would you believe, without hearing it, that Now /s The Hour could be
played in three-quarter time, and yet not sound like a "waltz" in the traditional
Viennese sense? Through the imagination of George Gates, these and many other
musical miracles have been achieved. "Now Is The Hour," for example, keeps that
same distinctly latin percussive pulse which, although in three-quarter time,
completely removes the feeling of a waltz.

The foundation for all these exciting performances is provided by nearly a score
of percussion instruments, some familiar, such as the tympani marimbas and
xylophones; some exotic, including the Uli Uli, the Pu Hi, and the Boo-Bams. (A
detailed list of all of the percussion is to be found below). Two noteworthy
contributions to the melody elements should be mentioned: that of Buddy Cole, who
used his Novachord so effectively, sometimes as a "string section" other times as
part of the percussion effect, and often as the melody instrument; the other, the
deft use of three soprano voices in combination witii an alto flute, in such numbers
as The Wedding Song, Beyond The Reef and, of course, Aloha Oe, without which
one could hardly depart from this musical visit to those romantic islands. The soloist,
Norma Zimmer, incidentally, was also the lovely voice which s»ng the obligate on
George Gates' famous recording of Moonglow, with the added theme from Picnic.
These elements, carefully planned and beautifully executed, add up to a stereo-hi-fi
delight.

Walter Wanderley (12 May 1932 - 4 September 1986) was an organist and pianist, born in Recife, Brazil and best known for his lounge and bossa nova music.

Already famous in his native country by the late 1950's, he became an internationally renown star through his collaboration with the singer Astrud Gilberto and her husband, João Gilberto. During 1966-67, he recorded three notable albums on the Verve label with the Walter Wanderley Trio (consisting of Walter, Claudio Slon (drums) and Jose Marino (bass). These albums, "Rainforest", "Cheganca" (complete with gatefold sleeve) and Astrud Gilberto's "A Certain Smile, A Certain Sadness" were produced in the United States by Creed Taylor, who initially brought the Trio to the U.S. to record. Wanderley's U.S. recording of "Summer Samba" reached #26 on the Billboard charts in the summer of 1966.[1]

After the Trio disbanded (though they were briefly reunited in 1971 for "The Return of the Original" on Canyon Records)[2], Wanderley himself continued to record albums on Verve, A&M/CTi, and GNP Cresendo. During this time he also made numerous personal appearances, including a concert tour of Mexico.

Known for his smooth style and mastery of the Hammond B-3 organ, he died of cancer in 1986.

Patrice Rushen - Discografia

Rushen demonstrated her musical potential at a young age; she was regarded as a child prodigy. In her teens, she won the prestigious 1972 Monterey Jazz Festival. She earned her degree in music from the University of Southern California. As a mature woman, she became a jazz master and top musical director.
Due to her musical talent, Patrice Rushen has made many ground-breaking achievements. She became the first woman to serve as head composer/musical director for the Grammy Awards and the Emmy Awards, the first woman to serve as musical director for the NAACP Image Awards broadcast, an honor she held for twelve consecutive years. Rushen has been the only woman to be a musical director/composer for the People's Choice Awards, HBO's Comic Relief and the only woman musical director/conductor/arranger for a late-night television talk show, The Midnight Hour which aired on CBS.
In addition, Rushen was named musical director/composer for Newsweek's first American Achievement Awards, broadcast on CBS from the Kennedy Center and she served as the musical director for Janet Jackson's World Tour, "janet."
